WHY GOOGLE'S TENSOR (CODENAME WHITECHAPEL) IS A MASSIVE DEAL

For those of us techies, leakmongers, techsurfers and wireheads (thanks, Tom Clancy's Net Force wink ) the Pixel Tensor review didn't catch us as a complete surprise. Hell, the only surprise is the big (spying) G spilling the beans before October. Okay, maybe they DIDN'T TELL US WHAT EXACTLY THE SYSTEM-ON-CHIP HAS BAKED IN.

Like, How powerful is it? Does the main CPU use Cortex-A77, A78 or even better the brand new A710?? Any Cortex-X1 (or X2 wink ) 'ultra-high performance' core? What is the clockspeed (how fast is it)? How good is the GPU? (Mali? WHAT Mali?? G77, G78, G710?? How many execution units?) Some leaksters claim it may even get AMD's RDNA Mobile? How true is this? Well, join me as we break down the leaks and rumours like a power user. cool

What is Google Tensor?
It's Google's new -- and first -- system-on-a-chip (SoC) processor. While Google made computers, Pixel Pixelbook Go, and smartphones, Google Pixel before, this is its first SoC. Google has, however, made machine learning (ML) processing chips, called Tensor Processing Units (TPU), for its data centers, since 2017.

What will Google Tensor do?
Google said Tensor will improve photo and video processing. It will also help power up like voice-to-speech and translation software. Google also claimed that Tensor will perform new tasks such as translating between languages in real-time and making still photos even when the subjects -- usually my grandsons -- are moving.

While Tensor will also use Google's cloud resources, it will allow the phone to process more information on the device instead of having to send data to the cloud.

What's Tensor, technically?
It appears that it will be an 8-core, five-nanometer, ARM-powered chip. Sources told 9to5 Google that Google co-developed Tensor, code name Whitechapel, with Samsung. If that's true, and I feel reasonably certain it is, Tensor will share some characteristics with Samsung's own ARM Exynos chips.

Is Google Tensor secure?
Yes, Google is building in more security than ever in Tensor. The chip will also work in concert with Google's new Titan M2 dedicated security chip.

What does "Tensor" mean?
Tensor refers to Google's open-source TensorFlow machine learning (ML) programming ecosystem. TensorFlow is the most powerful and popular ML programming framework.

Which devices will be Google Tensor-powered?
The first will be Google's forthcoming Pixel 6 and 6 Pro smartphones. Unlike earlier Pixel models, these are designed from the chip up to be high-end smartphones. Rumor has it that, soon after, Tensor chips will appear in Google's next-generation Pixelbooks.

When can we expect to see Google Tensor-powered devices?
You'll see them by the fourth quarter of 2021. So, if you want a new, powerful Pixel phone under your Christmas tree, Hanukkah bush, or any other holiday greenery of your choice, you'll be in luck.

Why The Pixel 6 System-on-Chip Is A Massive Deal

You see, Google; apart from being an advertising company (and the king of spies grin ) is by nature a software company. This is not the first time they have made their own silicon (their datacenter servers all use Google-designed CPUs); and should I remind y'all that they are working on a QPU (Quantum Processing Unit) for quantum computers? So they ain't exactly noobs in SoC design, guys. Oh,did I forget the Pixel Visual and the Pixel Neural Core?(!) Sorry. embarassed

WHY IS IT CALLED TENSOR?

If you sabi Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning workflows; you'll know that TensorFlow is the most widely-used AI & ML framework. And, yes; it was developed by Google; just like Android. I think they named it Tensor, because it is going to run TensorFlow natively, and it is connected to Google's software technology.

WHAT IS THE POINT OF TENSOR?

Well, aside from the fact that with their own dedicated chipset platform they can track you and modify your preferences to the hardware level and always listen to your voice and typing and the camera is always-on and location/GPS is always on even when you (think) you've turned it off and the data they have collated is being sent to Google through a hardware backdoor (man, have I just become a conspiracy theorist? grin grin) :

1) With their own hardware platform; Google does not have to rely on a third-party supplier (i.e Qualcomm) to provide SoC updates and driver bug fixes (word is that Qualcomm offers up to four years of platform [security] support, extendable to five years, but they [the OEM] is going to pay for this) and so therefore can offer software support for up to six, or even SEVEN YEARS of software upgrades and support! shocked

2) The Pixel Visual Core (and it's successor the Pixel Neural Core) does not have to be separate from the main SoC; and so can (and will) be directly integrated into the chipset, giving a lot better heat and battery efficiency savings (I wager up to 20-30%, maybe).

3) Better 'security' as the Titan M security chip is also fused into the application processor, thus improving efficiency, speed and of course, saving on space.

4) Google can now design a device that they have almost 97% control over; from the sketches and CADs to the finished device and software (i.e from the ground up) giving them near-Apple levels of software optimization.

5) Google can add newer technologies on both the hardware and software, and combining them with the hardwre-software synergy of having this level of control; we could see incredible implementations of existing features.

Like, maybe advanced image processing for improving video and audio recording?? Or what about live transcription and analysis of voices offline? Or a significantly more advanced Google Assistant that can even translate voices on-the-fly offline? Or maybe the most advanced camera software on the planet?? (from the few videos I've seen; I'd say the Huawei P50 Pro has the most advanced camera hardware and software right now) Who knows? TIME WILL TELL.

6) A WHOLE NEW GOOGLE ECOSYSTEM JUST LIKE APPLE'S?

AND NOW; FOR THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN...

Well, apart from the privacy issues I've just mentioned (grin); one (BIG) problem is that GOOGLE COULD MAKE IT CLOSED-SOURCE SO THAT PEOPLE WHO WANT TO CREATE CUSTOM ROMS ARE GOING TO BE, WELL... LET'S JUST SAY LEFT BEHIND. grin And for all the problems with Pixels; that is ONE reason why people love them. smiley

Lagos nawa.

Una don tire for Pixel matter? cry

Anyways, rumor has it that Tensor might be a lot more powerful than we thought.

Yes, I'm talkin' TWO FLIPPIN' ARM Cortex-X1 CORES!

It goes like this, they say:

2x Cortex-X1 @2.8GHz
2x mid-tier (Cortex-A78, certainly) @2.25GHz
4x Cortex-A55 @1.8GHz.

GPU: Mali-G78 MP??

I hope this has at least 8MB of L3 cache to keep those big cores well-fed. The Exynos 2100 & Snapdragm 888(+) do not use the 8MB L3 cache ARM used to state the X1 performance gains over the previous gen. They both use 4MB L3 instead.

And the GPU? Well, the Mali-G78 is a capable performer; so it may not beat the 888; but it should at least beat the 870.

What do you all think?

GSMArena says fitting two X1s in one silicon die is impossible ''because two X1s are too big to fit in a phone''.

They've forgotten just how big Firestorm (A14 Bionic, Apple M1) is. grin

A Notebookcheck comment did get my attention. The fellow said a mobile CPU with 2 Cortex-X1s in a single cluster does not make sense, because the X1 is a very power-hungry core that gets real hot.

So perhaps it's just 2.8GHz Cortex-A78 x2?

A leakster claimed GS101 Whitechapel, aka Tensor, known at Samsung LSI as Exynos 9855; will fall somewhere between Exynos 2100 and Exynos 2200 in raw performance.

What do you think, people? I think this leak makes 2x X1 more likely; unless Google's using a s***load of L2 cache?

Either way, I hope it can at least match the Snapdragon 888 in peak performance (and beat it in sustained workloads, too).

Google is actually towing the Apple line. They are pretty much the only OEM that could pull off an Apple. I'm pretty sure they will be catching many people by surprise. If Google gets this right, they've pretty much laid a really solid foundation for the next releases, and with time, they will leave Qualcomm in the dust. Qualcomm is too comfortable with getting away with whatever they release. The 888 was a shambles and almost an 808 all over again.
