I was watching this video on YouTube. I will link the video. This girl wAs narrating all the cost it took for her to get to the UK. To my surprise it was like 20 million naira. I just cannot imagine dropping 20 million naira just like that for something I cannot see I know I will have numerous stomach ulcers if I had to be parting with these huge sums of money and I am not getting something tangible in return like a house. If I give you 20 million I expect you to at least give me a small bungalow in return. But maybe I am just a cheAp guy . Lol. How do you guys do it ?

Yep you were fortunate to have japa-ed when things were better and less expensive. I hear about the cost of relocation too and like you I think to myself......mehn this is crazy! I can't do this and I won't do it, even if I have that kind of money.

To me it just feels like another rip off and pillage of our resources, like what the crown did to us years ago through colonization. Where they robbed and plundered our lands, only this time, we are the ones willfully participating in that rip off.

A close friend confided in me that she felt blue and downcast, because almost everyone she knows has japa-ed, even people junior to her in status and financial well being. I laughed and had a lengthy conversation with her on the importance of not looking at others or jumping on the japa train, for all the wrong reasons.

She and hubby own a house here, I asked her, are you willing to give that up to start over at your age? In a foreign country that is now over-flooded with immigrants and barely enough jobs/resouces to go round? I sent her a Youtube video as well to help inform her decision at the end of the day.
in fact you have said it all. Nothing more to add . Voluntary pillaging and voluntary enslavement. You pillage yourself and go give the bounty to the white man and then render your services to literarily wipe his yansh for cheap money ? No be juju be dat ? You have been enslaved and pillaged but you did it yourself. Most of these people get carried away by the pound strength but they don't know what you pay for rent per month over there is what we pay for the whole year. So whatever you make there it stays there. Bills . Unless you just are into crime then you can make money there. But if you are not into crime in the UK ? Forget that thing oooo. After working for 30 years you will look at your bank account and see just 1000 pounds saving grin

NOT SUPPORTING CRIME OOO

If you've been in naija for a while suffering the naija situation, the money will just be like an affordable means to an end.

Back in naija, I would close at VI at exactly 5pm, prior to that I would change my parking so I could hit the road immediately cos I was going to Oregun, then proceed to spend another 3 to 4 hrs on the road. Not a smooth drive o, traffic holdup, other crazy drivers, potholes and cracks everywhere. It was crazy!

Get home nko, I was lucky to live in the bit where PHCN hardly took light, but there are still days they did. Then I'm stuck with the heat or generator's noise all through the night.

Eat a simple meal, sleep to repeat the next day. Omo,e no easy o. I quickly lost weight like person on a weight lost journey and became an angry Nigerian as I felt cheated by the system. My former workplace was like 15mins drive from home....the stress was real.

So if I had a 100mil, I would spend it to get out of the hell-hole to go and become a street sweeper in the UK so long as my peace is guaranteed. I dislike wahala like kilode.

Some japa stories intrigue me because they are done by people who were doing reasonably well in Naija and not suffering at all. They never let you in on their plans but once they get there, you start receiving text messages about their relocation and texts soliciting prayer support for their success in the new land.

I don't have a problem with being left in the dark about their relocation plans or praying for them, but don't try to turn me into a prayer warrior on top of your issues. One friend is in the habit of constantly badgering you about prayers, in the course of a conversation she would say things like - that is another thing you should be praying for, for me, as if you owe her a duty of prayers.

Another whose hubby worked as a senior manager in a good firm and she in a federal agency, with a thriving cake business on the side japa-ed too. She took a leave of absence at work but is actively job searching in the UK now. When she mentioned the leave of absence, I asked her, do you honestly think your hubby will let you return to that job and leave him with 3 kids in the UK? You better concentrate on your new life there and finding a job because your old life as you knew it is over.

And boy was her cake business good, she even diversified into pastries, small chops and a bit of chinese cuisine. The things we give up for this japa dream ehn, I hope and pray it all works out for good. I read online that in our quest for something better we don't even take the time to enjoy the good things we have anymore, we are always fixated on something better.

Hmmmm, what faces person A might be backing person B o. Many didnt plan it well while some just did it for basic things like:

1. The free education for the kids. O boy, my friends kids are doing the kind of researches our university students cant do in their grade schools. Their level of thinking, discussions and reasoning is humbling to those of us that grew up in naija. You speak to a 6yo and wonder where that confidence and brightness came from...

2. Healthcare. Hmmmm, I dont want to tell you what someone close to me went through last year. If it were in naija, she's a goner. We thank God and the country for mercies.

3. Peace of mind and better quality of life. I cant over emphasize it. A friend visited naija recently from Canny and was unable to have a good night sleep, he had forgotten the kind of unrest that was our "normal" ....Bangers, gun shots, armed robbers, naija police, agbero, reckless road users, avoidable deaths, messy healthcare, etc.

4. Better infrastructures

5. The choice of country. There are some countries that is a sheer waste of time and resources. At the moment, UK is saturated, some parts of the US is dangerous. Na to choose right o.

Honestly, if one hasn't left naija, one wont realize what one is missing. Yes, it's expensive, harder to break into the labour market especially to be on the same level one was in naija, harder to save money, harder to get used to their food....but the means justifies the end. If them clean up naija today....everyone will run back home cos there is no place like home.

lmao me I know one egbon like this. Living large in naija. At a single sitting he would destroy 200 thousand naira eating fresh fish pepper soup and drinking wine . Every night oo. So just his enjoyment money was like 1.4 million naira a week. He is always trying to take me along but I alwAys dodge him. One of the advice I got was never hang out with people like this or you will go broke trying to keep up. So I always avoid his requests. He is one of the managers at sterling bank. Doing very well. 2 children. Na so one day the guy wassap me that he has japa to Canada shocked well few weeks and months after that baba done turn to bob Marley and the wailers ooo. Always wailing about being a security guard and they have him walking with a dog and a torchlight on 12 hour shifts. Hand done touch baba well well. He is full of regrets but he has sold everything and given up his job in naija. He says he has given up his life now that he is just living for his kids now. He went there with wife and kids

lol but your mindset is Still stuck in old naija ooo. Who are the people running up and down ? Renters. Once you are a homeowner you have no problems. So with that 100 million you just mentioned , just 70 million of that would get you a house in a gated community in Lekki with 24 7 electricity. Then you can learn an online skill and never have to deal with traffic again. It's all how you plan your life but the good thing about living abroad is that it expands your mind to know these things

Your Egbon no position himself well. If his goal was to start in the same field he was in Nigeria, he ought to have prepared himself with international Certifications to lend credence to his experience and skillsets or even gone to get the Canadian education. They are extremely biased about foreign experience and education even after verifying your education through their approved boards. I know a young man that was in banking IT security in first bank in naija, guy's first job here was in same field earning 150k/annually. That's because he had all the experience with international Certifications before landing here.

Besides, the most successful people here are the Asians who just do businesses and cooperate with one another in turning funds around. 5yrs in, they not only have successful businesses, they also have stability and citizenship.

While some had tales of woes, a lot more people have tales of yea! We cant all leave naija though cos who will remain?

You're right to an extent but my 100mil is hypothetical and I do not want to be caged in my home forever. I want to explore and live before my bones become too tired to do so. I want to move freely around without fear of the untoward. By the way, the nice gated estate in Lekki no even clean/fine pass middle class areas for Athens o. Why dont they make a lot of lekkis out of our dear country? May God help the country.

well you know not everybody is in IT. IT is a skill that is uniform globally and so long as you can prove that you are good, you will work anywhere in the world even in Mexico you will get work. But bank manager in naija is not a transferable skill no matter the certifications you get lmaoo or no matter the packaging

IT was an example. There are others. Bank manager is just a banking staff. They have certifications on different levels here too. For instance, my sister was in Zenith bank and her first 3 jobs here were in banking before she left for a govt job. To get ahead of the usual bank teller job, she had to do their banking certifications here.

Doctors nko, accountants nko, HR nko, project managers nko, business analyst nko, even teachers, etc? Most of these professionals have regulatory boards or recognized institutions that lend credence to your qualification. Their members move easily ahead. It's all about positioning oneself correctly. And ofcourse, dont aim to start at the top, start from the scratch to learn the system.

A lot of our naija folks dont have or tune their skills to be transferable though....so what were they planning to do once they get established in the foreign land?

you don't have to be caged in your home forever. You move around when it's not rush hour seeing as you don't have to work. And there is no fear if as you said you hAd the hypothetical 100 million. Lots of safe places you can buy for that amount. As for middle class areas in Athens ? I don't know because I have never been but I can emphatically tell you that those Lekki estates are better than council houses in London and projects in America. Those estates would be upper middle class in America and UK. In fAct if you go to the west end of London in posh places like South Kensington you would think you are in Lekki estates. Why don't they make a lot of Lekki ? Same reason they cannot make a lots of west hampstead in London. Too expensive. As for many have left and won't be coming back ? When dem hit 60 years old and are thrown in nursing home and a white nurse slaps you a few times while changing your diaper dem no go teach you the direction of ya papa house lmaoooo. As for your son ? Wait make e reach 60 na. Time flies fast lmaoo

One of the easiest ways to get scammed right now is through Japa packages. That "little" money you don't value , some people are smart enough to swindle you of it.

You go get sense last last.

Ok, so UK is known for their tiny tiny houses/roads and I dont really know US layout. But I had earlier mentioned choosing the right country. Canada is a lot bigger and better planned than UK. So you get to see a lot of nicely laid out roads and housing. Although, the sizes are still way smaller than you would see in Lekki o but the cleanliness, layout and roads is a waaaay lot better. Besides, you dont have to be a millionaire to own a good home here, just have a good enough income and ready to pay mortgage for a long time. I used to work in Lekki and lived briefly in VGC, so quite familiar with these places. Apart from Two major estates in Ikoyi, these areas are still afflicted with the dirts and disarray of Lagos. The ratio of slums to clean areas in Naija is crazy....dont even try to compare. Canada's slum is usually areas infested by Refugees and other immigrants but even those places still better pass most of our GRA.

As for living in care homes at old age....hmmmm....have you taken time to study how our senior citizens live in naija? Haaa! Especially those abandoned by their children/families in the villages or wherehaveyou? Who cares for them? Or the ones who had to contend with crazy daughter/sons inlaws? What does the govt do for them? The pensioneers nko? Hmmmm....I once went to Stanbic IBTC pension in Yaba to do a simple change on my profile details and caught a glimpse of what these people go through even when they have private pension in Nigeria. I ended up fighting with the staff there to get them to attend to me after sitting and waiting outside for hours! They just dont treat seniors right.

As for being slapped, sure there are few bad eggs. I will just hope for a good advocate when that time comes instead of returning to risk living like all those seniors uncared for.

You are joking or exaggerating, right? I don't want to believe this.......but on second thoughts I have a heard similar story where a guy with the former AP (now Forte Oil I think) relocated with his family too.

Only to return a year or two later, desperately in need of a job anywhere but at his former level in AP. His classmates rallied round him to help, what I am not clear on is if he had a job there and what sort of job it was.

@ Sisisioge, I would have loved to engaged you, but I don't want to type again, hijack the space or monopolize the conversation. So make I rest and let others contribute.

My life is greAt but there is this opportunity to japa with easy visa. Long throat. Destroy yourself because of long throat.

I will just hope for a good advocate when that time comes instead of returning to risk living like all those seniors uncared for.
well Canadian weather is not for senior citizens so you can rule that out. As for you don't have to be a millionaire to own a home abroad ? Well it's the value of the money is why you are a millionaire but in actuality 1 million naira is just over one thousand dollars. So that's a false equivalent argument . If you are a millionaire in Zimbabwe maybe you are worth 100 naira in Nigeria. Are you still considered a millionaire ? Lol. Well there is dirt and dissaray in almost every major cosmopolitan city in the world. Heck you can't even walk the streets of London these days without getting robbed. The world is a ghetto. I was in etobicoke in Canada. Crime infested slum . And ermm our elders are treated better and with more respect. But you have to carry yourself with respect though because these young guns today in naija are not giving it to you just on the strength of your age anymore. You gotta move with respect and you will get it. But over in the west once you are old you are just a rubbish waste of space lol. grin

Let's rest here....everyone will start from somewhere. May God meet us all at the point of our needs. Some need those menial jobs to even get work permit....AKA closed LMIA in canada. Do it for one year and get PR tinz. Na who know know o.

Cheers baba....enjoy the rest of your day wink
hehe sister forget that thing ooooo it's those who will get stuck in those menial jobs that are the most. I know one oga who has been driving taxi in America for 30 years now. Some will driver Uber forever. In London almost 90 percent of naija men over the age of 50 are security guards and have been doing it for over 30 years. Forget that thing oooo sister . But make we leave am for here as you talk. Make God bless us all wink cheesy

Seniors that have plenty privileges and govt support are waste of space? These people even have specially built housing estate for them where they live like in hotels o. Even their homeless peeps have free accommodations prepared for them but a few of them will rather stay on the streets because of drugs not allowed in these homes. You people will be feeding others misinformation yet the percentage of people that have consistently left Nigeria is waaaay more than those returning.... if the place no pay pwrson, sebi them go return? As in, you for instance left UK for Nigeria and went back to Canada? Why not stay in Nigeria? Atleast I know some men who actually left the families in Canny and returned to Nigeria only to be visiting from time to time. That choice is there
Why aren't people returning in droves? If you go MMA tonight, just see how we kept leaving and how arrival is scanty. Even the arrival is filled with those with returning tickets grin. Japa is not good, the woes is too much, yet we aren't returning grin

Surely, life is hard in a foreign land until one gets ones rhyme...bu it is silly of anyone to just up and relocate without a concrete plan. Oya biko no quote me again.....I don run completely out of energy.
