Engr. Elvis Osung Honours Late Mother with Scholarship Scheme

... Appoints Dr. Monday Dickson as Chancellor

Engr. Elvis Osung, a philanthropist and a prominent engineer who has played active roles in delivering sustainable engineering projects across the globe, yesterday honoured his late mother, Late (Mrs.) Grace Effiong Osung, with a scholarship scheme for indigent students of Oro Nation.

The scholarship scheme, which was inaugurated on Tuesday, May 30, will provide financial assistance to two students from each of the five local government areas of Oro Nation.

Beneficiaries will be selected on merit and will be required to maintain a high academic average.

In his remarks at the inauguration, Engr. Osung said that the scholarship scheme was a way of honouring his late mother, who was a strong advocate for education.

While hoping that the scheme would help to improve the educational opportunities for indigent students of Oro Nation, Osung called on the board to employ a fair and impartial selection process for the beneficiaries.

"My mother was a strong believer in education. She always said that education was the key to a better future.

"I hope that this scholarship scheme will help to make her dream a reality for some of the brightest young minds in Oro Nation", he said.

Speaking at the event, Elder Godwin Okponung, said that the scheme was a "much-needed" initiative.

"There are many indigent students in Oro Nation who are unable to afford a college education, this scholarship scheme will provide them with the opportunity to pursue their dreams."

On his part, the Chancellor of the scheme, Sir. Monday Dickson decried the rate in which Oro students were dropping out from tertiary institutions, due to financial reasons.

According to him "The scholarship scheme is a significant investment in the future of Oro Nation. It will provide educational opportunities to students who would not otherwise be able to afford fees.

"The scheme is a fitting tribute to Engr. Osung's late mother, and it is a testament to his commitment to community development".

He further stressed that Engr. Osung was a true son of the soil who was always looking for ways to give back to his community.

Also speaking, Mr. Sunny Bassey encouraged committee members to show passion for community service.

He charged them to show commitment during the identification and selection of beneficiaries.

Responding on behalf of the committee, Mr. John Bassey thanked Engr. Elvis for accepting to work with the committee and promised that the selection process would be based on merit.

According to him, the fact that Dr. Dickson was the Chancellor had already made the process a meritorious exercise.

Highlights of the event were the presentation of Grace Effiong Osung Foundation committee members with Dr. Monday Dickson as Chancellor, Mr. Prince Edens Secretary, representing Udung Uko, Mr. John Bassey, representing Mbo, Bishop Edemumo Jnr, representing Oron, Mr. Okon Edidiong Nyong, representing Okobo, Ulap Ezekiel Ibok representing Urue Offong Oruko.
