Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government-Owned Companies (SSASCGOC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have expressed concerns over the removal of fuel subsidy, pointing to its potential impact on Nigerians and workers. Both unions said Nigerian workers may not survive the effect amid receiving N30,000 minimum wage.

President-general of SSASCGOC, Surajudeen Alakija who is also the deputy president of Trade Union Congress (TUC) emphasised the importance of stakeholder engagement before implementing such a decision.

He said the president’s inauguration day pronouncement had already resulted in a series of events, including the introduction of new pump prices by the NNPC.

Alakija who stated this at the Quadrennial Delegates Conference of Maritime Branch questioned the fate of subsidies already paid between now and June 30th and called for the government to engage workers to mitigate the effects of the subsidy removal.

Alakija criticised the lack of transparency surrounding subsidies, referring to them as a scam.

He highlighted the absence of information on who receives these subsidies and the substantial annual amounts involved.

While acknowledging the need for subsidy removal, Alakija shared a personal experience of purchasing fuel at an exorbitant price of N540 per liter, amounting to N10,800 for 20 litres. He contrasted this with the minimum wage in Nigeria, which stands at N30,000, equating to less than $50 at the current exchange rate.

Alakija questioned how an average Nigerian could survive under such circumstances and called for a roundtable discussion with stakeholders and the government to address the impact of subsidy removal.

Alakija mentioned the recent deadlock in the meeting between the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the government, expressing discomfort with the approach taken in the negotiations.

He emphasised the importance of a roundtable discussion to find a viable solution, incorporating statistical data, facts, and figures to determine what is achievable.

While acknowledging the significance of the Nigeria project, Alakija urged that no workers should be sacrificed in the process, highlighting the need to strike a balance between national development and worker welfare.

Joining the chorus, the outgoing president, SSASCGOC, Abdullahi Abubakar said the removal will have an effect on Nigerians as it affects all homes.

Abubakar also appealed to the federal government, through the minister of Transport and Works to expedite action on the dilapidated Quay Apron at Tin Can Island Port and that of Onne Port Access Road which is continuously (constant) resulting in litigation and loss of revenue.

He said amid the dreaded Covid-19 pandemic, the Union with her scarce check-off dues swung into action and procured protective materials alongside some immune boosting medicine (drugs) and reach-out to all staff that were reporting to the office.

The intention of the government to subsidize PMS was simply to make the product affordable for Nigerians and make life easier.

So now they dont care about making life easier for the masses?

Because these guys in govt are not buying fuel, they are not buying recharge cards even food are free, infact they enjoy entertainment allowance, travelling allowance, newspaper allowance and even health benefits, as rich as Tinubu throughout his stay in that sit his medical expenses will paid 100% by Nigerians

They cant subsidize for us but we Nigerians are subsidizing for them to live expensive lifestyles abi

Tell them to let go all those allowances as part of their sacrifice watch how they will protest

Stop the corruption in subsidy not the subsidy

To me this is the area that NLC and TUC should focus their attention on, improved welfare for her members, not dabbling into policy issues such as subsidy removal.
If government increases the price of fuel as it is now, let the Unions fight for commensurate welfare package to counter the effect.
Any Union Leader who wants to come troll policy issues should go and contest election and become President of Nigeria.

So, the government should have kept the subsidy until we were broke? Severely broke?

No need to worry much on this.

Asiwaju will not betray the confidence Nigerians reposed in him.

As we can see, Jagaban has hit the ground running right from day one.

Sit tight and watch how things unfold.

If only Nigerians had allowed Jonathan to go ahead with this same subsidy removal 12 years ago we would have at least 5 working refineries by now that would be able to cater for our local consumption.
Now look at where we are, on this same page of subsidy removal even after a decade.

Government should give Liecense to local investors to set up modular refineries that’s the only way out, competitions will drive down the prices of petroleum products just like it did in the telecommunications industry.

Nigerian workers are right in their agitations. With the subsidy removal, the minimum wage of N30,000 is no longer realistic.

This is an open secret. Another issue is, an increase in the minimum wage will invariably lead to a commensurable increase in prices of goods and services thereby causing hyperinflation and making life become dearer and dearer to the consumers. We are in a dicey situation

Tinubu should stop being an authoritative leader and try to be diplomatic in finding solutions to problems. You can’t just be sworn in today and you order the seize of subsidy payment. Learn from your past successors they are aware of the exhorbitant payment to subsidise petrol products why haven’t they stop it? Buhari set a trap for you and you fall yakata. Tinubu consult with stakeholders in the sector and put necessary measures in place to cushion the effect of subsidy removal… Don’t allow people have the thought of missing Buhari’s govt. because as far as am concern Buhari still remains the biggest failure in line of past leaders of Nigeria.

Very true! Let no one tell us that half loaf is better than none! This is a desperate development that requires a desperate solution. It's if the minimum wage reaches tobN120,000 that the average worker can believe in Nigeria. This suffering sticks to the bones. I haven't eaten anything KILLED by fire since Wednesday. Na so so gari and kulikuli!
