The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has kicked against what it described as the deceptive move of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over the removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government.

The spokesperson of the group, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, in a statement issued Thursday, said it observed that on every occasion, the NLC would deceive the public into believing they are protecting their interests, only to betray the course and negotiate with the government at the expense of the suffering masses.

It said the first instance was the NLC protests over the harsh economic policies of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s government in February 2017 which came to an abrupt end without achieving any results and no convincing explanation to the public.

It said, “Then came the September 2018 strike, which was also terminated after the NLC met with government officials and compromised the effort with no effect.

“The worst scenario was the October 2020 organised labour plan to shut down the entire economy in protest over the increase in the pump price of petrol and a hike in electricity tariff.”

The group noted the strike was called off at the last minute after a meeting between government officials and labour leaders in Abuja.

The group stressed that it took exception to the move by labour at that time, describing it as a huge trade-off and compromise in its strongly worded letter of October 6, 2021, to the former President of NLC, Ayuba Wabba, expressing disappointment in the labour leadership, for deliberately suspending an action meant to check the arbitrary hike in fuel prices by the Buhari administration.

“Now that NLC wants to take the nation for granted once more, we demand that it should first of all explain its whereabouts at the time the budget was prepared, presented, defended by the government of the former president Muhammadu Buhari and passed by the 9th National Assembly without the provision for subsidy,” it said.

According to Abdul Azeez,”We call on the new administration of President Bola Tinubu to handle this obviously dicey situation with utmost wisdom and compassion so that the innocent public is not made victim.

“We call the attention of the Tinubu administration to be vigilant over the latent trap set for it with the subsidy issue by the outgone government aiming to set it on a collision course with the public early in the day.

“We therefore advise government to deploy maximum wisdom, and caution to chart a workable means of dealing with the bad situation deliberately thrown on its laps in such a way that no one gets

So CGN is supporting buying PMS at N560 in the North with minimum wage of N30,000?

Increase minimum wage, provide palliatives and allow deregulation. It's not done the other way.

Tinubu is actually the one of fooling around

Why did he went against subsidy removal during Goodluck Jonathan regime to the extent of sponsoring protest all over the country

The same reason he rejected it then is the same reason Nigerians are rejecting it today

Lol which Obidient?

Any protest that do not originate from Lagos and have some certain movers won’t see light of the day.

Na Yoruba people understand protest and how to move it because we have history of true activists that command respect.

Remove SW mobilizers from your protest and see it die a natural death.

Tinubu need to deal with NLC once and for all and the obvious partisanship of the top leadership in LP is a perfect excuse to lay a trap for them.

It will get to a stage where state splinters will emerge and defy the national body order. They can’t continue to hold the nation hostage.

If they say Tinubu must increase salary because of subsidy removal, then we can agree and that will motivate the workers to join. But you can’t just tell Tinubu to reverse the subsidy and threaten him with strike.

If Tinubu cow out by reversing the subsidy removal, then he is a weak and ineffective president.

So Yorubas are not buying fuel for 600 naira abi, the reason why we are still talking is because jungle have not mature a month from now everybody will hate Tinubu including you because once food items increases you won't endure it just wait you go witness the sleepless

Yoruba are buying fuel at 600 and nobody is saying they ain’t buying it.

But we have to look at the greater good. Since the early 2000s, we have been saying the FG should remove subsidy but it always reach the brick wall everytime. Now Tinubu was successful in removing it and NLC want to come in their usual manner to destabilize it without at least offering another way out.

Subsidy removal is very important to Tinubu administration success or failure. Nigeria is broke and if we continue to pay subsidy, there will be no freed money to at least move real development.

Infact it will get to a stage where FG won’t be able to pay salaries anymore and that is when people will understand why it has to go. NLC/ASUU are not always right and the government is not always wrong. So NLC should quit acting like the moral authority.

I mention Yoruba because of the guy that said if Obidient get involved. So I’m telling him the SW is the mover of real protest in this country.

If you feel the pulse of the North currently, it seems they understand subsidy has to go. The SW understood this too, so how exactly will Obiidient lead protest to ground the country?

The salary increment must be commensurate with the fuel hike in 3 folds
30k must rise to 90k etc

Tinubu is not successful in removing it. He's only attempting just like Jonathan did in 2012.
Besides, I thought y'all said Tinubu has all the answers to our problems and far better than everyone that ever ruled.
How come he's doing same things others have wanted to do since early 2000 which he also criticized? Isn't that the prefect definition of a scam?

What you have to look at also is will the states be able to afford it even if the FG increase their allocation?

Till today, some governors cannot even pay 30k or even normal salary promptly.

But they MUST increase the minimum wage and NLC should negotiate a reasonable rate instead of outrightly saying subsidy must come back.

Whether the states will be able to pay is another matter
That has never been a clog in increasing federal salaries. Let FG that is removing subsidy do the increment and let's see the states that won't follow suit. Then we'll know how to go from there

You’re right. He is attempting it and he will only be given all the accolade if he do not succumb to NLC blackmail like his other predecessors did.

Opposition politician will always strategize, the president tend to have enough balls to face them and do what is right. Jonathan dropped the ball by not standing firm even witn the protest from opposition.

It is Tinubu turn now, let’s see how he handles the opposition to this and if he eventually succeed in the end, then he is truly the Jagaban.

If he failed and backtrack, he is just as weak as Jonathan and his predecessors.

No. It proves he's not different from the rest. What exactly did you think Buhari's media men mean by we'll miss him?
He was sold by you guys as a visionary who comes with brilliant solutions to problems and not a strongman who loves taking hard decisions.
Jonathan was forced to drop the ball because the country was grounded for two weeks when the opposition-sponsored Labour protests gained ground. There's no politician born of woman who won't shift ground in such circumstances. Even OBJ did too and Buhari as well.
All these show that the masses are decidedly against being asked to suffer under the umbrella of subsidy removal.
So if he likes, he can go get iron balls, he's no different from the rest with this Ruto like move.
End of story
