Not Going To University, Does That Make One An Illiterate? by Chatflick(m): 11:46am On Jun 08, 2020 |
I've come across many people that simply conclude not going to the university makes you an Illiterate but I refuse to agree. Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. The acquisition of knowledge or skills must not necessarily be in a classroom or a physical learning environment. What is your take on this? |

Chatflick:Literacy and Exposure are two different things entirely. Literacy is definite and polar, while Exposure is non-definite and has levels. Literacy is the act of knowing how to read and write in a any language one understands, not necessarily English, French or Latin. It can be in one's indigenous language. One can either be literate or not, no level of literacy and doesn’t need a formal education to be. Exposure is the ability to know, recognize and understand some certain things like numbers, letters, places, skills, ideas and philosophies based on prior knowledge, lesson or experience (practical or theoretical). Exposure has level, depending on how long and far one can go to acquire it. University education brings about exposure, not Literacy. Reading and writing are not learned in the university, but educational levels below university. 3 Likes |

Chatflick:It is not true that not going to universty makes one an illiterate. Literacy, as has been pointed out, is the ability to read and write, and there's tons of decent 'didn't go to the university' readers and writers out there. |

Reading and writing isn't a university's job__ That is why primary and secondary education is necessary. Being a graduate doesn't mean you've secured a job too so if you have a good skill explore it and make good use of it. |

Amotolongbo:Yes, I learned to read and write small small before going to university. Then I went to university where they taught me to read and understand the bigger books, and write better, and also that I must continue learning. |

Amotolongbo:Thank you for permitting me to clap for myself, Amontolongbo. As op rightly said, "The acquisition of knowledge or skills must not necessarily be in a classroom or a physical learning environment", but if one does go to university, one, will, learn. |

At this point I don't know what to comment Therefore I rest my case for the elders above me and beneath, perhaps they have something reasonable to comment. |
