Bayo Ohu: Police arrest 2 suspects

By Kingsley Omonobi

* Offer N2m for more clues

ABUJA — INSPECTOR-General of Police, Ogbonna Onovo, said yesterday that the Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of The Guardian’s Assistant News Editor killed in his home in Lagos on September 20, this year, just as he announced a N2 million reward for anybody with more information that would help the police solve the riddle of the murder.

Also, the I-G paraded a robbery/kidnapping kingpin, who confessed to being a member of an eight-man gang that not only kidnapped Chief G.U.O Okeke of GUO Motors and demanded N50 million ransom, but has been terrorising the people of Delta and Anambra states.

According to the IG, “I want to recall the painful murder of the Assistant Political Editor of The Guardian Newspapers on 20th September, 2009 in Lagos State. Police investigation is progressing and some suspects have been arrested while more are to be arrested as soon as more facts emerge about their location and involvement.

“However, the opportunity of this forum may not be appropriate to state beyond what has been stated. I have also ordered a reward of two million naira for anyone who volunteers useful information to the police in this circumstance. To the media, I note your pains with all sense of responsibility and assure you that with God on our side, we shall surely unravel this murder case”.

On the kidnapping of Chief Okeke and Chief Anthony Enukeme, CEO of Tonimas Oil Nig. Ltd, the IG said, “On the 17th of October 2009, a Police/Vigilante collaborative effort led to the arrest of one Emeka Eze, a notorious armed robbery/kidnapping suspect in his hideout at Asaba, Delta state. On interrogation, the suspect confessed to being the brain behind numerous armed robbery and kidnapping operations in the

South-East, especially Anambra state.

“He particularly confessed to participating in the kidnap of Chief GUO Okeke of GUO Motors and Chief Anthony Anukeme of Tonimas Oil Ltd. Following these confessions, a search was executed in the suspect’s hideout at Ubarunisoghe village, Nando, Anambra state and a large cache of arms and ammunition were recovered.

“The weapons include five AK-47 rifles (all serviceable); two GPMGs, one rocket launcher; five rocket propellers; three rockets; 5,830 AK-47 live ammunition; 1,125 rounds of GPMG live ammunition; 124 empty magazines of AK-47 rifle; one K2 rifle and two empty magazines and one loaded gun with 20 rounds of live ammunition.”

Also, the IG disclosed that in the spirit of the amnesty programme of the Federal Government, youths from Kogi State (Kogi Central Senatorial district) have embraced the programme by surrendering the following arms, “one G3 rifle with magazine; 3 AK-47 rifles with magazine; 3 pump action rifles; one model 70 rifle; one double-barrel long gun and one broken single barrel gun.

“Others (Ejule in Ofu LG of Kogi State) are twelve pump action rifles; four AK-47 rifles with magazines; one G3 rifle with magazine; one locally-made Barretta pistol with magazine; two AK-47 rifles with magazines and one pump action rifle.”

Also, the I-G said in response to a distress call on the kidnapping of Chief Bernard Nwora, CEO of Bethel group of companies in Abuja on October 17, the police, FCT Command, rescued the victim unhurt, arrested some suspects who confessed to the crime.

He gave their names as John Okpo, Justus Alex, Johnson Asogwo, Marcus Eze and Victor Alex while four locally-made pistols, 17 live cartridges, fourteen packets of knock out explosives, the victim’s handset and a black belt were recovered from them.

Re: Police Arrests SE Kidnap Kingpin by dayolove: 12:09pm On Oct 29, 2009
na wao for this naija. how did these arms get into the hands of these kidnappers in the first place, where is our customs, police, operation mesa, operation flush and operation that? why the debate if we can all carry arms in naija since most villages/hideout are already militarized. God will not 4gve the likes of Peter Odili, James ibori, Orji Uzor kalu who funded this kidnappers and above all, PDP - papa deceiving pickin, all masterminders of these ignoble acts in our once great country. Afraid dey catch everyone now as arms proliferation is our most worry now. even iraq is safer as it is now. no one is spared. i pray it continues to get to our leaders - governors, senators and even the villa. it is only then that our salvation will come. until it becomes their nightmare, we may never be safe. so i encourage the kidnappers to go for the abuja big boys/girls and politicians in high places so that solution can be found.

if the said arms caches are true (not the usual Nigerian police) style of overstating stories, then there is a bigger problem than we know in nija. even the notoriously and feared al-queda will shiver to have these arms in their posessions and here we are having them in a little village. Ak-47s, 1960s RPG-7s and WW2 era machine guns are what you're calling 'well equipped'?!

Thank God you're not affiliated with our Defense department.

Hmm. So even youths for Kogi dey surrender arms? The police should round them up for armed robbery ASAP!

Na wa oo

Nando oje na mmoo. They always lead in crime. Don't try them in fake drugs production.

That Awkuzu-Nando-Nteje axis is very notorious for producing notorious criminals in Anambra state. No thanks to the activities of the self styled Igwe of Awkuzu (late John Nebolisa).

I also believe those Ayamelum/Anambra East zone are the least developed in the state, the state government should invest more in those areas in order to engage the youths. They have massive arable lands that are quite fertile.

see me talking as if the govt will just wake up and do something. angry angry angry
