Price control in a free mark et economy?

Even in the most capitalistic and free market country in the world USA, their government set price control on food and sometimes on rent. You can't have the prices of food skyrocket anyhow, you'll throw that society into anarchy.

I am sure these guys are not really serious with this thing they are doing. Increments in salary will only invite inflation. For me, I think what the workers shout fight for is the naira purchasing power. If my salary is 20k, I should be able to purchase good things with it. For example, with 20k salary:
Bag of rice.... #950
House rent (annually)... #230
Sch fees (private sch)... #110 (very expensive)
Car (moderate).... #6500 cheesy grin
Buy a house... #4250 etc

We are just pursuing shadows.

Higher Minimum wage will only lead to higher inflation.
Very soon ₦50 & ₦100 notes will join ₦5, ₦10 & ₦20 in becoming worthless.

It's only Good & Effective Governance + Increased Productivity that will boost workers' purchasing power, not wage increments.

Stop smoking,

Do you think they deserve more than that #70k ?

Are you sure that you are correct about the defination of purchasing power?
To me, i think purchasing power means when workers are paid high salary, so that they can buy whatever they need or want. So purchasing power means high or increased salary.

Over the roof spending by a minimum wage earner
You get sense at all? In your corntree what’s over the roof spending? Can you point any of the expenditure that’s expensive? Bag of rice is 75k, Gas is 1200/kg, Yam, plantain, tomatoes? A liter of fuel is almost 1000 in some area.

But you did not state your reasons how increased inflation will not led to inflation, So as to counter what he said.
So the question is, will high salary led to inflation?
1Alex:
will your suggestion be done over night or even in one year? . So workers will keep perishing till they land on a solution after these trial and error policies?

Prices of everything have increased by more than 200% and the salaries remain the same. If you were a civil servant, you would not have made this suggestion.

Anyhow e go be make e be. Make them increase the minimum wage.

It doesn't work that way most times,, more money in circulation doesn't necessarily lead to inflation, where there is more money and increase in the level of productivity, what would happen is deflation which is the direct opposite of inflation , this would improve the living standards of workers on fixed salaries as against the inflation that favours mostly the business men.

₦150k max
Minimum should be ₦100k

You must be realistic to know that anything below ₦100k solved nothing and anything above ₦150k causes more harm to both the workers and the economy.

Very unfortunate. NLC has totally lost it. The most unproductive corrupt people in this economy asking for an astronomical increase in salaries that will eventually cause inflation.

If you want to purchase anything as small as 10 usd online? It means 1/3 of your monthly salary is gone. Just for 10usd that someone earns in half an hour in the United states
Will the remaining 20k be sufficient for you for the rest of the month?
What if you’re buying something of 50usd?
Is that what you want?

Inflation has always been around, forget about it
We need to be able to purchase goods in the international market without breaking the bank!

New Minimum Wage =>More Money in Circulation =>Higher Inflation =>Demand for New Minimum Wage...

&the Vicious Cycle continues.

Your submission is subjective and based on self interest. Most of u not salary earners don't know the importance of increase in minimum wage. If the situation is left like this, in a couple of year most Nigerians ( including non salary earners) will live in abject poverty.

Govt should pay for their accommodation, fuel, medicals? This makes zero sense. Unrealistic demands. They should add sex allowance too.

True the minimum wage must be increased but all these other demands eh....

I agree with you but I ask you a simple question. Do these guys look like people that are interested in strengthening the naira when they travel out just to discuss matters that could have been done here. They purchase jeeps at 160m each for themselves allocate to themselves all sorts of allowances and use the dollars to bribe each other during elections and then expect workers to depend on them to strengthen the purchasing power of the naira. You are on a long tiin.

Labour know they will not get that 615k they are asking for but the 615k breakdown highlights the reality and it's a good place to negotiate and get a good minimum wage for the workers because these guys don't send you a civil servant and they also no send consequences of their frivolities. It doesn't matter to them so why should it matter to labour.

They will continue to spend as they like and make you a civil servant be expectant for better life till you retire. Hmmmm... true talk. I don't really expect anything good from them honestly

This prices were too much for people who lived in the 70s and 80s and 90s, only those who earn 6digits in Dollars could afford at that time.

In 1998 minimum wage was #5500 which is equal to $250 and $250 today is same as #350000 grin, bringing time value of money what that minimum wage in 1998 will have a purchasing power of #650000 in today's money. The labour guys are correct

All earnings cannot be for recurrent.
N80,000 is realistic and OK.
Someone that has been surviving on N35k will.survive on N85k

NLC are not serious with the bogus figures they are putting forward, how will they convince anyone.

We are talking about minimum wage earner here i.e the least wage that should be paid anywhere in Nigeria.

How will a minimum wage earner be living in a house of 40000 per month, that's 480000 per year. Note we are talking about wage for unskilled workers like cleaners, attendants, maid, etc. even private school teachers should not be minimum wage earners but for weak labour laws in Nigeria. How many private establishment is even paying the existing minimum wage even for graduates in their employ?

Medical expenses of 50k per month when health insurance in oyo state is less than 14000/annum for standard package while premium subscription is like 50-100k per annum.

Electricity bill of 20k/month
Waste management bill of 10k/month
For unskilled workers wage? Or maybe NLC is talking about the wage of skilled workers with HND, Bsc etc.
