Organised Labour yesterday shunned a meeting of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage, NMW, over what it described as government’s insulting proposal of N48,000.

Ths is even as the federal government also yesterday, hinted of its readiness to shift ground on its minimum wage offer.

Recall that organised labour negotiating team, under the auspices of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and its Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, counterpart, had on Wednesday walked out of the meeting after rejecting the government’s new minimum wage proposals of N48, 000.

They contended that the government’s offer was not only insulting the sensibilities of Nigerian workers but also falling significantly short of meeting their needs and aspirations.

According to organised labour, what the government offered is a reduction in income for federal-level workers who are already receiving N30,000 as mandated by law, augmented by former President Muhammad Buhari’s 40 per cent peculiar allowance of N12,000 and the N35,000 wage award, totaling N77,000.

On Wednesday evening, after organised labour walked out of the Tripartite Committee on NNMW meeting, the Secretary/ member of the committee, Ekpo Nta, sent a letter inviting organised labour’s negotiating team to a meeting yesterday, claiming the meeting was adjourned to yesterday after deliberations.

In a letter signed by the Director Compensation, National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, NSIWC, Chiadi Adighiogu, on behalf of Mr Nta, read: “I am directed to inform you that the members of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage after day-long deliberations at its 4th meeting today Wednesday 15/05/24 (yesterday), adjourned the meeting to resume tomorrow Thursday, 16/05/24 at 11am at the same venue.”

However, organized labour negotiating team did not attend the meeting and vowed not to return to the negotiation table until government put its house in other, show seriousness and transparency in the negotiation.

A member of labour’s negotiating team and deputy president of TUC, Dr Tommy Okon, said: “There was no way we could have attended the meeting today (yesterday) after we walked out yesterday (Wednesday).

No, you do not expect us to be back at the meeting. We are not pushovers. We expect government to put its house in order and present something meaningful. Until the government shows its seriousness and the transparency to negotiate, do not expect us there. We will stay out.”

Presidency begs Labour

As if responding to labour’s demand, the government has pleaded with organised labour to return to the negotiation table, promising to shift ground.

Chairman of the Tripartite Committee on NNMW and a representative of the federal government, Bukar Aji, in a letter to the President of NLC, Joe Ajaero, dated May 16, 2024, announced Tuesday, May 21, as a new date for the resumption of negotiations.

The letter read: “You will recall that, organised labour representatives walked out of the Tripartite Committee meeting of yesterday (Wednesday), May 15, 2024, after the presentation of position paper by the government side.

“However, as earlier discussed, we need to all sit back on the negotiation table to analyse the tripartite position and shift grounds by all sides to enable us conclude the assignment before you travel to the International Labour Organisation, ILO, Conference holding in Geneva, Switzerland, this is to give assurance to our teeming workforce that the Tripartite Committee would do all that is possible to reduce the waiting time in concluding this assignment.”

I congratulate all agbadoroans on the price of goods in our markets.

Imagine FG offering N48k when Obaseki is paying N70k. FG is not serious at all.

Sigh... In just one year, this administration has not only worsened the situation in the nation, but has also managed to run out of ideas on how to remedy what they have destroyed.

There is nothing as dangerous as corrupt and clueless people in power.

So you want them to start with a 100k minimum wage demand so that your government can reduce it to 50k after much negotiations ?

Tell government 600k and after negotiations and much deliberations, they would arrive at a figure that would favour Labour.

Jagaban is not paying subsidy like Buhari, so let him add something substantial on the current minimum wage.

#48,000 per month with nuclear inflation in Nigeria?

This is slave wage and not minimum wage, period.

Anything less than 200k is a NO!

If we are being honest, they should start by harmonising all minimum wages from Mr. President down to the lowest civil servant.

You can't be asking a low level civil servant to go home with a salary of less than 30,000 monthly while barely-working lawmakers take home millions.

Yet both the civil servant and the lawmaker are subject to the same inflation within the nation.

Tinubu and his underlings are not ready to toe the path of transparency and fairness.

I keep saying this... You can't destroy the lives of average citizens to fund the excesses of the privileged.

If we are going to go through harsh times to surmount our protracted economic problems, let the pain not be limited to the masses... It should be shared across all levels.

There must be visible and transparent cut in government expenses and abolition of excesses among the elite.

Research all the working nations on Earth... None of them functions as ridiculously and obscenely as Nigeria, where a poor nation throws Billions at White elephant projects, medical tourism, and subsidising pilgrimages.

Just imagine 48k

That cannot even fill the tank of a Toyota Corolla vehicle

It still cannot buy a bag of rice

It cannot pay electricity bill for Band A in a month

It cannot buy a bag of beans

This Rehoboamic govt should know that Nigerians have their limit to all these bullshit

I thought their zombie followers say govt now has more money

48K is not even 100% of 30k yet price of everything has increased by 300% since last year

It seems APC has a devilish pact not to incease minimum wage beyond 60% of the previous.

PDP always did 100% and above for their minimum wage fa

This is truly minimum wage, maximum suffering

APC is simply demonic!!

Ajaero should take the bulls by the horn and shut down everywhere!!

Shut down the poverty ridden economy!!

100k self is very small if we are been realistic, How much is a loaf of slice Bread and how much is a can of Malt...approx #2000+

so if a Worker is to get just a loaf of bread and can malt per day without transport, he will spend upwards of 60,000 then put transportation and health plus other expenses... you will see that it is not that much...

The government keep making cost of things expensive to rake more money undermining the wellbeing of "common Nigerians"

Hmm...

There is a very serious problem... apc has really messed up the economy.

The stup1d actions & policies of apc has caused Prices of goods & services to skyrocket, but the wahala is that it has not led to a corresponding increase in purchasing power.

So the question is, where is all the money going to? Because if Prices have increased, then the additional price increase differential should find its way into circulation and reveal itself as available disposable finance.

But it seems like the additional funds as a result of price increases are being sucked into a Black hole... it shows that the increase in taxes and removal of subsidies gives more funds to the government which in turn is embezzling it and/or channeling it to unproductive areas of the Economy, hence the reason why there are no funds to support a significant increase in minimum wages that can cut across all strata of the working class.
