I want to go into software engineering,where do i start.I have a diploma in Electrical Enigneering

Regarding starting a software Business, I think this has to do with two things even though you didnt specify better, I mean you want to start selling 'Original' Software not 'Pirated' Software ? but I guess you may be wanted to start Developing Software.

This is very good idea, but Software Business, the way you put it, involve learning 'Powerful' Programming languages, or rather 'Marketable' Programming Languages, I mean i don't know how far you have gone in terms of Programming skills, but you MUST know at least 3 programming languages i.e Visual Basic.Net, Java Programming and C ++, these three powerful Object Oriented Programming Languages, are very common when it comes to Developing a Software for a company, individuals or government agencies.

However, you need additional tools like software that will enhance and make your Interface looks good and thinks like that for that I will recommend Macromedia Flex.

Nevertheless, you put this in mind that, knowing programming languages, along will not be sufficient, because you must also know some Database Application (even though not deeply), like Mysql, Oracle the MS Sql, these DBMS will really help in making your software looks standard and of course to meet your client requirement.

In nutshell, you also need to study this field very well and to understand the concept of designing a software, therefore there are very interesting books on the fields like: Program Design, Software Architecture, System Analysis and Design, Programming with VB.NET, Programming with C++, Object Orientied Programming with Java etc (Sorry I cannot remember the publishers, but I will find out for you).

Another thing is that, you must show interest and dedication to this field and of course you should know that this field will consume alot of your time, and your 'brain' because you must learn how to easily solve a very complex Programming Problems, when a client request for a software.

I will also recommend hooking up with Software Programming Forum, find a nice one and get registered, you know, make friends out there, exchange and share ideas, feel free to ask them questions and things like that.

All I can say is if you can make it just a like a hobby, in shorter time, you would find out that you started making it.

You can start with making small application for free, post them on web, you know, expect some commends and responds from Professionals and things like that.

I am just trying to help, I am not an expert on the field, you should know that, but I believe some these hints will really help you to start up.
