Breast Cancer (1) Definition- Breast Cancer is d cancer that affects d breast tissues. (2) Causes -this could be either genetic causes (Familial I.e it runs in families) or Acquired Causes (ingestions of carcinogen like canned drinks, Organic solvents, Xenostrogens( chemicals added to pesticides and cosmetics) , Benzene, Cigarette smokers (especially passive smokers),Tobacco, Ethylen Oxide, DDT, Radiations, Aluminium containing antiperspirants (deodorants). (3) CLASSIFICATIONS- Breast cancer is classified into: (A)Ductal Carcinoma if d breast cancer affects the mammoryduct (B) Lobular Carcinoma is a breast cancer that affects d mammory Lobules. (4) Epidemiology- breast cancer is Distributed worldwide and about 98% of all breast Cancer affects women than men while d remaining 2% affects Men and that of men have bad prognosis cos of its delayed diagnosis. (5) Risk Factors of Breast cancer - *SEX (affects women than Men) *AGE (it increases with increased age *increse Alcohol intake *Cigarette smoking (especilly passive smokers),Iodine deficiencies *calcium deficiencies *Vitamin D deficiency *Obesity *ingestion of contraceptive pills *Early Menarchy *Late menopause *Hyperoestrogenaemia *Lack of breast feeding in lactating mothers *Nuns *Celibasy * not having children *Delayed first child *Hormonal Replacement therapy (menopausal HRT). (6) SYMPTOMS - *a lump on d breast which may or not be painful *Axillary (armpit) lump *Unilateral Breast enlargement *Abnormal thickening of d affected breast *Nipple discharge *inverted Nipple *A rash on or around dnipple *itching *swelling *Redness throughout d affected breast *Peau d'orange (resembling Orange peels) (7) Treatment - The type of treatment to give is dependent on d following characteristic *the type of breast cancer * the size of d breast cancer *the Stage of the breast cancer *geographical position of d breast cancer. Drugs (chemothreapy, Hormonal therapy), Radiotherapy, Surgery, immunotherapy. Chemotherapy is given in fast spreading cancer to prevent Further spread of d cancer to other organs. Radiotherapy is used after Breast conservating surgery. Surgery is d golden Standard.
