Funny enough, then ‘Brother David’ (born 27th September, 1954) had simply aspired to use
whatever wealth he acquired to spread the good
news of the gospel as a big-time Christian
philanthropist, not a pastor! This ambition did not
however stop him from joyfully seeking every
opportunity to engage in evangelism. There was a time in 1973, while still a polytechnic student, he
was asked by a visiting uncle – who also happened
to be the Area Education Officer – to take up a
vacation job as a relief teacher. The assignment was
billed to last only 70 days. When he arrived in the
village, he was shocked to find that no church organization had established a presence there –
not even the ubiquitous Catholic Church! He
immediately set about the task of evangelizing the
inhabitants with plenty of eagerness and energy. Within only 40 days of arriving in Dumagi Village in
Shonga LGA of Kwara State, he had single-handedly
erected a church building on a parcel of land
procured from the Village Head! And on the 72nd
day, which was his last Sunday in the village, a
farewell ceremony was organized by church members during which one of the elders presented
him with a parting gift of a bush lamp (lantern)
while declaring, “Silver and gold we have not; but
we give you this lamp. Let this light you brought to
our village shine round the world.” The gift and the
address ultimately turned out to be very prophetic indeed! As an apostle, prophet, pastor, thinker,
educationist, administrator, philanthropist and
prolific author, he has become a household name
around the world. The Winners Chapel has become
a global phenomenon with over 5,000 vibrant
churches in over 300 cities in all states of Nigeria and about 600 churches planted in over 63 cities in
32 African nations, Dubai, the United Kingdom and
the United States of America. The ministry has also
made very significant impact in the educational
sector with the establishment of about 100
kindergarten/primary schools and over 20 secondary schools in Nigeria and other African
countries, as well as two world-class universities at
Ota (Covenant University) and Omu Aran, Kwara
State (Landmark University). The first church was planted on 11th December,
1983 – the Living Faith Church, Kaduna. On 19th
July, 1989, he received another directive from the
Holy Spirit: “Arise, get down to Lagos and raise me a
people.” It is worth noting that he promptly left a
3,000-member church in Kaduna to come to Lagos where just 300 people attended the first church
service on 24th September, 1989 just to obey God!
By 1999, the number of services on a typical
Sunday had grown to five with a total attendance of
50,000, putting the limited facilities at Iyana-Ipaja
under severe pressure. On 18th September, 1999, the historic 50,000-seater Faith Tabernacle was
dedicated. The edifice is not only an architectural
wonder and a fulfillment of prophecy, but it has
also entered the Guinness Book of Records as the
largest single church auditorium in the world! Bishop David Olaniyi Oyedepo has a very strong
compassion for the downtrodden and the rejected.
He wants to see Africa lifted from the nadir of
mismanagement and underdevelopment to
Olympian heights of good governance and all-
round development. His foundation has established the African Leadership Development Center, based
in Covenant University, as the springboard for
achieving the emancipation of the continent. But
long before this, precisely on 15th January, 1995,
the birthing of the Africa Gospel Invasion Project
(AGIP), under the auspices of the World Mission Agency (WMA), saw the sending forth of the first set
of missionaries to Congo Kinshasa, Ethiopia, Ghana,
Kenya, Liberia and Sierra Leone – it was the
beginning of another epoch. Like every maker of history, Bishop Oyedepo has
been subjected to a barrage of vitriolic criticisms but
his attitude has always been to remain focused on
the assignment God has entrusted to him, while
those who believe they have been called to a
ministry of criticism should equally continue with their assignment, as at the end of the day the
results would separate the wheat from the chaff. No
doubt, facts are sacred and comments free. Because
he is someone who shies away from publicity, very
few people know that he spends billions of naira
annually on philanthropic activities. There are those who accuse him of commercializing
university education. It must be stated that given
the world-class standards each of the church-
owned universities is committed to, the fees would
have been much more higher if not that they are
substantially subsidized by the ministry. Those who have children in foreign universities – including
those in neighboring Ghana – should compare the
naira equivalent of what they pay with the fees’
regime at Covenant and Landmark. Besides, no
student with excellent academic records has ever
dropped out of school on account of inability to pay the requisite fees. Then there are those who say that he emphasizes
prosperity in his messages at the expense of
holiness, and that his ownership of a private jet is
evidence of an opulent worldly lifestyle. In the first
place, men and women of God have different
callings and visions. The bible exhorts each person to abide by his own calling. Besides, Bishop
Oyedepo’s commission comprises three main
mandates: ‘The Word of Faith’ (of which
consecration or holiness is a key pillar),’ The Word
of Prosperity’ and ‘The Word of Signs and Wonders.’
It is simply ignorance that made the blind man touching the tail of the elephant to say that the
animal is slender and long like a serpent! And with
the spread of his ministry all over the globe and his
numerous local and foreign engagements, it is far
cheaper and hassle-free for him to have ample
freedom of movement and scheduling. On 7th September, 2012, Bishop Oyedepo formally
launched the operating manual of the ministry
before a worldwide satellite audience. Known as The Mandate, the 504-page timeless publication not only chronicles the history of the church, but
even much more importantly, it also sets out the
doctrines and structure for the organization for the
next 50 years – it is a must-read for any person
with anything to do with charismatic
Pentecostalism.

We disagree to agree. I am not an enemy of oyedepo in anyway. The only thing i dont support about pentecostalism generally is the issue of tithes, finish.
And this affects several churches, even RCCG that i am a member of (mas o menos - in spanish).

Paused the thread to wade off a spiritual attack, wow, it seems i have made some powerful new enemies on nairaland

Where did we stop? Okay, the fact that we dont support the same doctrines does not make us enemies.

I think this biography exerpt said to' use whatever wealth he acquired to spread the good news of the gospel as a big-time Christian philanthropist, not a pastor!' but not the other way round?

Err, my knowlege of ingles language is not superb enough for me to understand all that. Are you trying to say that:
A big-time xtian philantropist should spread the good news with whatever wealth acquired (and not necessarily because the person is a pastor)?

It isnt making sense, now its wrong for a pastor to be philanthropical

Most people don't know the faith and the sacrifice of a minister. It's only when glamour appears they see . And for many ministers most of the so called glamour are present and gifts they receive in appreciation . And most of what they received are put into the spread of the gospel

For a highly respect MOG to publicly to condemn his blood sister to hell simply because she choose islam is absolutely wrong.

As a man of God which he claims to be, winning souls for christ should be done with love and not by threats.

What he did would only make her hate christianity the more...and concerned muslims would come to her aid.

Stop defending him blindly and open your eyes to the truth.

This is exactly what i wanted to hear, people are so blinded by the latter end, this men of God suffered pain in the past and are eating the friuts from some of the people they have ministered to spiritually. Oyedepo placed himself on a meager salary right from the onset of the ministry far back in 1983, he hasnt received a dime in Royalties from all his published books which have sold more than millions in copies.
Dont be blinded by false truth people. Oyedepo isnt a pastorperneur. He is seeking Gods kingdom and all other things have being added.

And that is a town that has both Muslims and Christians that leave and dine together. Pls Crazy man, dont act Crazyily to a sane man Of God.

Stop this your ignorant posts...payment of tax is far different from extorting money from desperate and frustrated members.

I remember my little cousin gained admission into covenant university last year...her dad who happens to be my mum's younger brother is an active member of the church.

They were told to pay about N150k or thereabout just to accept the admission.

That's pure extortion if you ask me...he built the university on the toils of his members.

Its so annoying that most of them, after labouring so hard to see Oyedepo's dream become a reality, are unable to send their kids there.

Mate, the truth is University education not funded by the government is expensive. Be logical in ur agruement, how wld the school be managed if the Doors are wide open for all church members at a little price.

The University was built by funds but the school is funding and paying its own bills right now. Living Faith is a church i know that doesnt rely on foreign aids or telemarketing. No member of the church is cajoled to make donations. Bible principles are preached, you have a choice to adhere to them and get blessed or ignore them.

State of the art auditoriums are built round the country and no member of the various host church makes cajoled to make any donation. Every dime in the church purse is properly accounted for.

Bishop David Oyedepo doesnt live on church money, but free will donations from blessed church members.

Its called Image Laundering, Bishop is trying to clean up his image after that inglorious slap of a 'witch for Jesus', the story is an autobiography that I have heard him publicize many times and is also in one of his many books. I like the man, his drive for money and assets acquisition can inspire the cripple to stand up and walk. I love the man, he is a good man. But that slap was one mistake too many, and lives forever on the internet. Time will heal the psyche, but if he can do great charitable works and stop re-writing the wrongs by fairy tale of goodwill he did when real Christianity was his goal against the status quo, it will go along way to purge him of the daint on his image. Christianity has changed in 21st century, you can no more cain or slap a daemon out of even a lunatic without being taken to court for assault. Oyedepo should know this dynamics now. I love the man, I have attended his church more than a couple of times and bought the tapes, infact one of his teachings titled 'The Making of a Star' startled my knowledge base and catapulted me into riches within 6 months. Bishop Oyedepo is human, and should be forgiven. I love them man.
