There are over 250 ethnic group in Nigeria, the 3 most popular of them being Hausa,Ibo & Yoruba. Nigeria has 6 geopolitical zone namely southeast, southwest, southsouth, northeast, northwest and north central. Ibos are predominantly in south east. While in school; I missed freely with different tribe cos I makes friend easily but something that always puzzle me the most is about my friends from the southsouth and southeast region. Whenever there is any short break or long vacation, if you ask them where they will spend their holiday? The answer will be a joyous "in my village" Very recently a good friend of mine serving in the same school with me , I ask her where she will spend her brake and she said she will first spent a little time with an uncle in Abuja before going to her Village in Enugu for xmas and new year. Another friend of mine from Delta state presently residing in Kaduna said she will be in her village for the xmas and new year. Meanwhile my southwestern. Friend will proudly say the name of their town where they will observe their break. Hardly will anybody from southwestern part of the country call their town, city a village. My question is "do we have more villages in southsouth and southeast part of the country compare to other region".....Your comment and experience is highly welcome....

Yes there are more villages in the Southeast and Southsouth because they lived in village groups prior to colonization. It however does not mean they are more rural. A native of Ogbunabali or Oroazi in Port Harcourt living in Abuja will tell you he's going to his village even though its in the heart of a large city. Same with an Umule native from Aba or Awkunanaw native from Enugu. What I noticed in Yorubaland is that they use quarters or road(oke) in place of village. Where they refer to as village is mostly rural areas.

Many town-like places are called village by Igbo people because in the last 100 years most Igbo towns were created out of villages, or expanded into villages. The village members still retain their identity as a village so this is why they would still call it village or homestead. It's not uncommon to see a sign like "welcome to ---- village" in the middle of a bustling town in Igboland.

I tire for these ppl ooo..They seem not to know how disrespectful it is and the most painful part is that some of our fellow Igbo share in that foolery. Somebody even said ibo is for midwesterners while Igbo is for southeasterners.....my head wan burst that day.

The Igbo peoples' settlement patterns differ from that of the Yoruba, like Ezeagu and Abagworo have said before me.
