i wouldn't say i'm a very generous person but i give tips on free will, mostly when the person offering the service is hospitable, i wouldn't mind giving a tip..., but what pisses me off most is when i'm been asked by someone(waiter, security guard, attendant, etc) to give a tip  , i find it irritating and unproffesional, dont know whether its the nature of ones' job that makes one ask for tip, but sometimes cashiers in the bank does it too, though rarely.Some jobs might be menial and the pay little but is it enough reason to ask for a tip? cos it does irritates me a lot and i mostly end up not giving such tips. would dat be cruel of me? does any1 else also find it irritating? 3 Likes |

If you ask me for one, you ain't getting any Seems you've never been in a position where you had to tip to hasten a process and breakdown some bureaucratic red tape  Like when I wanted my transcript, the processing officer told me it'd take about two weeks for it to be ready as the result has to be collated, verified at the department level, lots of pending transcript applications bla bla bla As a sharp guy, dem no tell me before I arrange the guy N1,000 and he had it done for me in 3 days. Most peeps won't ask you directly for tips but by their actions and mannerism, they convey it. . . 1 Like |

In Islam, it is forbidden to give bribe and to accept bribe. But if someone asks for a bribe before giving you what is rightly yours, such as the processing of a document or something similar, the sin is recorded for that individual and not the giver of the bribe. On a more serious note, it is not right to give bribes or tips because someone has rendered a special service to you to the disadvantage of other individuals. Everyone has equal rights. 1 Like |

There's a diff btw trying to appreciate a person for a deed & giving tips or bribe. I give tips as a sign of been grateful. I hate it when I m forced to give a tip. |

And sadly enough, it is the trend in naija. People as for tips for doing the same thing they were hired by their employees to do in the first place. like they are doing you a favour. Very very very very very disgusting attitude if you ask me. Worst culprits are the civil servants or federal parastatals. Jeez, those id.iots kinda compell you to give those tips by employing all sorts of frustrating tactics. Naija is really messed up! |

The most irritating aspect is that it is now so widespread that it is almost legal. there's this funny way they do it at the restaurant, when they bring you your bill, its either they come with a POS machine or u hand them your card, then they ask you "how much should it be sir", my bill is right there on the paper, why u asking me? 1 Like |

I went to a microfinance bank with someone yesterday. He was there to apply for loan. After the usual greetings, some members of the staff started speaking in a language he doesn't understand ( which is my language) that the guy is an aka-gum, he doesn't ever drop tips, he's an aka mara mma, etc, etc. I was wowed, like is it that they don't collect salaries or what. When leaving, on getting to the bank's gate, the security men were like 'oga, anything for us'? He just told them he came to drop papers, and asked if they wanted some of it. As for me, I don't think I've ever given anybody tip. It's your job, do it. |

If its a place or service I use often, I tip regularly. When I don't have or want to tip, I use "sweet mouth" for them. In times of emergencies, bad emergencies, you'll thank your God for all the tips. Can't say much. |

There is this eatery close to my house, each time i go there to eat or buy a snack, the security guards at the enterance are sooooo fond of asking me for tips, at first i obliged but when it became incessant, i had to keep ignoring them till they eventually stopped, i almost stop patroniziing the eatery just cos of their annoying and embarrassing request. |

Terrible. That is extortion already, and one wouldn't want to go to the lenght of reporting such an act to the manager or owner of the restaurant cos it may cost the culprits their job. There was a restaurant i ate sometime somewhere, i was please with the service of the waiter and i offered him a tip, but he politely refused and told me they are not allowed to collect tips...that is the only place i saw that. |

it is courteous to tip service people These people get paid so little But they should wait for it not ask for it The Nigerian crudeness never ceases to rear it's ugly head. Some even go as far as seizing your change and telling you there is no change so you are forced to tip them by force |
