Following in the footsteps of Gangnam Style, internet sensation the Harlem Shake is headed for the Official Singles Chart Top 40 this weekend!

New internet sensation Harlem Shake looks set to follow in the footsteps of Psy’s Gangnam Style. Soundtracked by New York DJ Baauer’s track of the same name, the Harlem Shake meme is spreading like wildfire to become the latest viral smash. Today Baauer’s single has shot into the Official Singles Chart Top 40, and sales show no sign of relenting before Sunday.

The numerous home-made Harlem Shake parodies are a nod to a New York dance style of the 1980s, and feature unassuming subjects in their bedrooms / lounge / offices going nuts when the heavy bassline of Brooklyn-producer Bauuer’s track kicks in. Harlem Shake debuts at Number 22 on today’s Official Singles Chart Update.

However, with the original track clocking up over 3 million YouTube views, and hundreds of video bloggers producing their own Harlem Shake memes, it’s sure to rocket further up the Official Singles Chart come Sunday.
