Actually I've had two but there is this particular one that nearly drove me mad. I had met this dashing young man who on the outside looked suave and urbane. On our first date, he took me to a fancy restaurant and we ordered our meals. He ordered eba while I went for coconut rice. As the meal arrived, he plunged into it without the courtesy of even waiting for my meal to arrive. I waved it off and attributed it to hunger but it was his table manners that really turned me off. The guy lunged into his food like a deprived refugee, smacking his lips, sucking noisily on his fingers, chewing with mouth open while gasping for air like an asthmatic. By the time my food arrived, I was the focus of all eyes in the restaurant because at this time, the guy was 'gisting' with me in a loud voice while sucking and grunting like a pig on a piece of meat with soup running down both sides of his mouth and down his fingers. I couldn't bring myself to eat my food and he thought he could urge me on by plunging his soup stained hand into my rice to feed me a piece of meat. The last straw was when he sneezed (and noisily too), then he reached for the towel, (not the serviette that was right in front of him o)and noisily blew his nose into it, then he cleared his throat and added a dose of phlegm while other customers were shuddering and hissing at him. I couldn't tolerate it any longer, I simple picked up my purse and left the restaurant. I barred his number from my phone and never ever went out with him again.
So fellow Nlanders, is there any experience to equal or beat mine?

@megareal, i knw dis response is comin a few years too late but i wud hav loved to ask you dis at that time? What did u see, hear of, or learn about this guy b4 hand dat really convinced you to go on a date with him in the first place? i am guessing by now u hav already learned to accurately judge a person's mannerisms b4 accepting to go out with him or her. He also shud hav noticed your unsettledness at the table during the date and asked about it so he cud adjust himself. But if that single most overwhelming hint cud hav so easily passed him by cos he had his mind on the food at that time, then it means he cud care less if u had even shown up at th restaurant at all or that u even walked away.

My thots on dis.

Absolutely nothing to have indicated his bad table manners. He was well educated. Dressed, spoke and acted well. I'd never gone to his place, so wouldn't really know. He was just a nice young man. I was also a good judge of character but I completely missed it on the table manners. He tried calling for weeks after that but I'd barred his line.

I had talked to this girl for a while on social media and we agreed to meet at a mutual friend’s party. She appeared to be into me for two hours while we talked, isolated from the rest of the party.I went to the restroom, got a new drink, chatted with some other people for a bit, but afterwards I couldn’t find her.
I didn’t see her the rest of the night, and nobody knew where she’d gone.As I was leaving the party, one of the many cars was an SUV with fogged up windows. I didn’t find out until the next morning through our mutual friend that it was her in the vehicle, and she’d banged some dude she had met only minutes after me. embarassed

As much as I wud want to trust ur sense of judgement on his supposed education, the whole date sounds like a whole set up to me. His behavior at the restaurant was totally unacceptable and either calls his education to question or lands a big slap on ur reputation. An educated man shud know dat his date is priority on any such occassion. That he ordered his food b4 urs and started eating witout waiting for u and totally creating an ugly scene wit his eatin habits can only mean 2 things. He did all of dat deliberately to test ur reactions or he did it to just ridicule u. Other than dis, he is not and can not claim to be educated no matter how well dressed or well spoken he appeared to be at that time.

I thought so too at the time until I met two people almost like him. An ex boss and a church member. The ex boss is well travelled and well read. He lived in California for years. Married to a lovely wife, but his table manners are appalling. He's a mirror of the guy except for the sneezing. He eats like an animal. The other is a married church member with a Phd. Dnt get me started on him. The day I saw him eat at his place, my mouth was agape. Wife was so ashamed, she kept telling him, 'dear we have a visitor', but the man waved her aside. Those two made me realise some people are human in clothes but animals within.

Yea, bad table manners irritates me. So does senselessness and lack of vision. I believe a grown accomplished man should at least have learnt how to eat well in public and at home. Good table manners were my first lessons at home.

I'm not perfect, but I'm quick to learn and easily identify what am doing wrong in the midst of people and adjust.

I just dislike obtuse people who can't sense things or adjust when they are making others uncomfortable .

Those men might never have had ur kind of parents to teach em etiquette n all DAT! Mum was a teacher n she beat hell into me before I stopped slurping my soup! Some men are not so lucky n might even grow up without any kind of supervision......
If u liked any of them...u could have taught them DAT u know! Am always ready to learn if a lady make me see reasons for being wrong...

I see what you mean. Over the years I have learnt to do that on different issues if the person is ready to listen and not set in his/her ways but then, I was younger and had certain expectations lol.
