the eagle-eyed will notice I'm running in airplane mode with wifi turned on, as i always do when home or at work. i use the 3G when on the road, and funnily enough it saps more battery than the wifi. but the really funny thing is 3G zaps juice on my N95 more than it does on the iphone 3G (though to be frank the N95 has seen better days). and my 5610 xpressmusic dies quicker when in UMTS/3G mode than the iphone does, though the difference is like 15 minutes and mind you the 5610 too has been around longer than the 3G. it shouldnt surprise anyone who uses wifi on phones and lappies that its a serious battery eater. @Flyuche you don't have to like the iphone, a lot of people don't and i too still have one or two issues with the device, but I'm quite sure if you give it a whirl you might change your mind. meanwhile 150k is a ripoff; only factory-unlocked ones go near that tag (at 127k or so a pop). we just bought a sim-locked one from the UK last week at 360 pounds from 02, roughly 73k naira given todays exchange rate. indeed we later learned you can get it elsewhere for 10 pounds less. Texazzpete is bound to go out soon so why not arrange something with him? |

it's like the iphone browser doesn't suppose tab browsing. when will it support flash ,ajax like skyfire? |
Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by naijafan(m): 11:35pm On Dec 11, 2008 |
flyuche: safari supports ajax. probably a lot more than your typical Nokia web browser (no references here). its not like skyfire uses a special javascript engine or something so its probably the same ajax support as every other mobile browser out there. flash? dunno how soon that's gonna hit the iPhone. |

Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by texazzpete(m): 2:25pm On Dec 12, 2008 |
flyuche: Thanks for making it obvious that not only have you never used an iPhone before, you've probably never bothered reading any single review of the device, especially since most reviews of the v1.0 firmware devoted lots of time to the Web browser, even unanimously hailing it as the best browsing experience on any mobile phone. Adobe is developing a flashplayer for iphone, now its how to get it into the AppStore. Opera too has OPera browser for iphone except Apple wont host it, citing competition with mobile safari. http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/09/30/adobe_flash_player_for_iphone_due_soon_if_apple_approves.html http://gizmodo.com/5072333/opera-for-iphone-ready-to-go-if-not-for-apples-app-store-policies |

Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by flyuche(m): 4:36pm On Dec 12, 2008 |
@tex. you give yourself too much credit over a phone. does the iphone browser support tab browsing? yes or no |
Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by ExInferis(m): 4:56pm On Dec 12, 2008 |
flyuche: in a way, it does. when you have multiple open pages, just click on the bottom right icon, swipe and voila, Bob's your uncle. do you ever consider that mobile phone browsers are not intended to be full desktop replacements? not every single feature on desktop browsers can be cloned on mobile counterparts so stop trying to make a mountain out of a teeny molehill. perhaps next you'll ask whether safari supports add-ons and widgets. |

Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by ExInferis(m): 6:41pm On Dec 12, 2008 |
Rich Dad: i have never owned or unlocked a palm os device before, only WinMo and iphones. but here is the deal in reference to the problem you face: one, most software updates on Palm OS devices and a few on WinMo update ONLY the OS and not the baseband. before you ask, the baseband is like a separate entity in your phone responsible for all radio and network functions like network search, network authentication and connection, calls incoming and outgoint, sending SMS, data links (GSM,3G,EDGE, CDMA etc), bluetooth, wifi, SIM operations etc. so, this baseband has its own mini OS known as the MODEM FIRMWARE, which is often separate from the phone OS SOFTWARE. most software updates from the phone manufacturer contain only updates to the non-baseband features of the phone: User Interface, code refinement, bugs elimination, added features etc. but sometimes software updates also contain firmware updates for the baseband which tweak network service, sms sending/reception, bluetooth or wifi power usage, network serach etc: in such, all the PHONE aspects of your device. so, most carriers lock the phone via the baseband, meaning that any unlock, official or illegal, must run code on the baseband in order to modify it to accept other SIM cards. that is why some phones are easily updated by software, but SIM-unlocked only via dongles, USB or testpoint hacks. such methods interface directly with the baseband firmware, bypassing the general software to perform its tricks. this is often because a layer exists between the software and firmware to check each other for tampering: ie the OS checks the baseband to be sure its not modified and hacked, and the firmware also in turn checks the OS for any running software hacks that attempt to fool either the OS or the baseband into accepting unauthrized SIMS. so unlockers use tools that place the phone in a sort of half-sleep mode since the OS and baseband only talk to each and enforce their security when the phone is fully awake. I'm sure you must have seen some of these exotic unlocking tools if you've ever taken a phone for repairs (dragon box, etc). now back to your case: Palm released a number of updates for your phone, but even though some contained updates to the baseband firmware, none contained any unlocking mechanism to free the baseband of its SIM lock. the post i gave above was an attempt to upgrade the software of a locked phone using software from an unlocked phone. problem is, the software relocks the baseband, so no unlock. i just found that at the edit the guy gave after he updated and the phone remained lock. the only option as far as i can tell is to send the phone for physical unlocking via dongles. |

flyuche: oh no, thats so very shallow of u fly!! believe it or not the iPhone has the browser (safari) the gives the best browsing experience ever. Even the LG and samsung omnia are having issues matching that and all u can argue with is tab browsing thats lame |
Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by cabali(m): 4:33pm On Dec 13, 2008 |
Ok, meanwhile 2 questions, 1. how do I get the apps on mine, I use an iTouch (and the Wi-fi for connectivity). it should be the same. 2. The youtube apps on my iTouch never connects even when I gat connectivity. It always says 'cannot connect to itunes' I have never connected successfully. what could be the remedy? Tex hit me hard on this!! |
Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by cabali(m): 4:38pm On Dec 13, 2008 |

Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by texazzpete(m): 4:45pm On Dec 13, 2008 |
@cabali Any info on the firmware you're running on the Ipod touch? Also, what model of the iPod touch is it? If it's the latest 2G touch (with external speakers) jailbreaking is not possible yet. More likely it's the older one sha. |
Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by Neoteny(m): 5:17pm On Dec 13, 2008 |
cabali: if using internet coonnection sharing via wifi and https (ie secure connection) is not on, then you cannot connect to itunes store because it makes secure connections. as for the youtube thingy, jailbreaking via ziphone messes it. if on older (ie 1.x) firmware then you need the youtube fix from installer. unfortunately i cant remember the repo. as for apps, everything has been said on these pages. |
Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by cabali(m): 6:00pm On Dec 13, 2008 |
It is the earliest touch I own. 1.1.2. How do i do the youtube fix from installer?? help!! |
Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by texazzpete(m): 6:02pm On Dec 13, 2008 |
cabali: Will you at least consider upgrading to 2.1 firmware? I'm due to hit Lagos early next week. Can help you with that. |

cabali: well, the godfather of the iphone (texazzpete) is on a meet with you, so he'll solve your probs and then some. ps: neoteny and ex are the same. |
Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by texazzpete(m): 1:22pm On Dec 14, 2008 |
Neoteny:lol. We both know you're on a different level altogether. I'm stepping out on wednesday. This time i will not fail to snag that composite cable for the iPhone, and probably a spare pair of earphones. Engadget et al like to snigger at the quality of the apple supplied earbuds, but when you're looking for an alternative (and have tried many crappy ones) you realize that the apple buds aren't half bad at all. Dakmanzero could never convince me to splash out 80 pounds on a seinnhauser. I'm not THAT much of an audiophile |

@ neo, ex and all your other alter ego's you forgot to tell me where i can get d sim freer and how much it is. my 3g iphone is arriving tomorrow and i would seriously hate to just be looking at the thing. hook a brother up! would have ordered one but my connect bringing in the iphone couldnt is highly not versed in these aspects and would most likely buy me a sim card even if i sent him the link on how to get one. dude! hook me up! |

Hi Guys, I'm new to the forum. I've been reading this thread all morning and must say that you guys really know ur stuff. Thing is, I just got a jailbroken iPhone and since i'm no computer guru, I really am at a loss as to how to love-vendor it like what I see from the screen shots displayed. I'ld really appreciate a simple and patient step by step explanation on how I can get those really nice games and apps into my phone as well as how I can configure my yahoo mail on my phone and also browse the net. I use MTN. Just yesterday, the Cydia menu on my phone was upgrading some stuff and before I knew it, I had exhausted N1500 credit within a few minutes and I didnt even know! Is it that expensive to download stuff into the phone? Somebody, anybody, please holla back. Thanks!!! |
