The reason they did was because they were forced to. Here's how. The colonialists invaded, captured our territory, and diverted all resources away from the old indigenous systems to the sustenance of their new dispensation.

To succeed in that new dispensation, the conquered Africans were told: Send your children to the colonial schools to gain a western education. Those who did came to be well paid, as clerks, teachers etc.

Anyone who entered the colonial missionary schools was forced to renounce his traditional faith and adopt christianity, showing the deep involvement of the christian church in the colonisation process.

Over time, sending one's children to ''the white man's school'' came to be a passport for the former traditional elite to maintain their future elite status, as well as an opportunity for those of less status traditionally, to 'upgrade' their social standing by gaining prominence and wealth, via western education etc. For all who went into the colonial schools, abandonment of one's religion was the first requirement, followed by baptism and perhaps a change of name (or addition of a European name to one's African name).

Over the decades, as more people got western educated and christianized, traditional religion came to be seen as a sign of 'backwardness' and illiteracy. Something to shun and deride.

So it was economic blackmail of the most egregious kind that led our ancestors away from their religions into the waiting arms of ''the lord''.

Correctly said indeed. Beliefs are often embraced due to the goodies/freedom that comes with them(beliefs),atheism is no less an example.
