2015: Merger parties pick Buhari •Fresh tension as CPC crisis lingers
Written by Taiwo Adisa - Abuja Sunday, 05 May 2013 00:00

Emerging revelations from the camp of merging opposition political parties have revealed that the leaders of the parties have now resolved that former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, should be given the presidential ticket come 2015.

Sources close to some meetings held between 30 April and 1 May by top leaders of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) hinted that the leaders had resolved that Buhari remained the most sellable of the presidential hopefuls within the party.

Sources told Sunday Tribune that while the feud between Buhari and a former governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, appeared a cog in the wheel of the opposition’s presidential challenge in 2015, the strongest aspirant in the midst of the opposition remained Buhari.

A source in one of the CPC meetings said that even the national leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Senator Bola Tinubu, had recognised that Buhari would give the opposition the popularity they desired.

The source further said that the leaders were thinking of looking inward because of the belief that importing any aspirant from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would indicate that the opposition was incapable of raising a candidate and that such a PDP import would automatically become the leader of the party as currently practised in the ruling party.

“While commenting on the choice of presidential candidate for the planned opposition mega party, ahead of 2015, many of the leaders concluded that Buhari remains the preferred choice, and that Senator Bola Tinubu himself had contended that it is only Buhari that can give the opposition political parties the popularity they so much desire,” the source said.

He, however, stated that one major problem against the Buhari candidature was the unresolved feud with Shekarau.

“I can assure you, however, that many of the leaders are concerned and the leaders of the three merging parties have agreed to meet before the planned national convention of the CPC and ANPP to resolve the feud between the two Northern leaders,” he said.

One other trouble raging in the fold of the merging parties, according to sources, is the unresolved feud within the ranks of the CPC.

“We are worried that the CPC crisis is unending as the party remains factionalised. While the ANPP has its own problems, the situation in the CPC is bad. Senator Rufai Hanga has refused to be reined in yet,” a source said.

According to another source, Senator Tinubu recently contacted the Hanga-led faction of the CPC, but the situation has remained stagnant.

“I can confirm to you that Senator Tinubu recently met Senator Hanga, but I cannot confirm we have found solution, even though Tinubu had met with Buhari afterwards,” the source said.

What is progressive in choosing a 70 something years old man? The proponent of this merger party are indeed sick, bereft of any progressive tendencies if Buhari is their candidate. Even my dog knows that Buhari is an expired product, who cannot win election in Nigeria of today.

I can safely conclude that PDP and by extension Jonathan(sic) is going to remain in Aso Rock come 2015. indeed this is another political blunder and harakiri by the oppositions. So they'll print posters with Buhari for president in 2015? smh!

This is not a wise decision, in my opinion.
But I will hold off from making any further comments till there is confirmation from a different source, as I simply don't trust the tribune any longer.

Don't believe everything you read on newspaper. It is just not possible that they picked Buhari already. Doing so jeopardises their chances to show their democratic tendency. It is against the law and he would be disqualified if they just pick him without election at the convention. I don't believe it. My mind tells me Fashola, Rocha or Oshiohmole is going to be the nominee. Don't forget the same newspaper said two days ago Buhari was stepping down for younger and more qualified candidate.

May be you are too slow not to notice that I've been singing this song for ages.A little poster background check would have cure your ignorance on this subject matter, though I doubt if your low IQ would've allowed you go beyond quoting the name Rhino.

Insincerity on what we truly want is a major in Nigeria. Is the problem of Nigeria caused by age of our leaders? NO! Is the challenges of our economy a result of an absence in technocrats? NO! Is the problem facing us as a nation and our inability to move forward a direct product of sentiments? YES! Why can't will just for once be reasonable - if age is the magic why then is a young and educated GEJ performing so horribly? Or why is Dimeji Bankole and the rest "youths" embroiled in massive corruption? Any reasonable person who is still thinking freely and not with a bought conscience will attest to the popularity of Buhari and the sincerity of the man's quest for a positive change. When we reason in terms of how old a man is and where he is from rather than the ability to perform then we are indeed our problem. Politics is a game of popularity and numbers - only Buhari can within d frame of two years be sellable cos pushing a new relatively unknwn individual as a presidential candidate is a suicide. Age has nothing to do with performance in govt and history has a lot of examples. What we need is progress - sincere transformation and "total" freedom from the bondage of PDP. Our problem is not about age, sex, tribe, place of birth and other trivia tinz - our problem is corruption, greed, insincerity, mismanagement and PDP!!! Buhari is the man! After him a young an vibrant Nigerian can emerge but not now - to clear the rot in this nation atm is not a child's play...Sai Buhari!!!

the main issue is that APC is a marriage of strange bedellows, infact there are many battles that will be fought, especially about who controls the party btw Asiwaju and the Northern wing represented by Buhari, infact this will be the main battle and my instinct tells me Asiwaju being a very smart politician will win the battle and maybe someone like fashola or oshiomole will emerge as presiden. With this scenario APC can win the presidency but if they put any aboki as flagbearer, they will not win because of what their bokoharam has done to this country.

And to all you singers of young president - how many of you voted ur young comrades who contested for the presidency in other political parties to serve as a form of encouragement and also as a testimony of your sincere want for a young president. How many of you belong to a political party or are u dreaming someone will one day knock your door to offer you the candidature of a party? See we should cover our face in shame that the only tin veritable against Buhari is his age and religion - and not that he is corrupt and insensitive to the plight of the masses. Because Buhari is old I should then vote a clueless GEJ cos he is young? Because Buhari is a northern I should then vote the corrupt GEJ cos he is from the south? So because Buhari is muslim I should vote the visionless GEJ cos he is a "christian"? We need to start thinking and acting like people that sincerely want a positive change. It should be progress over sentiments not the other way round...transforming Nigeria atm is not a child's play I beg to repeat! Sai Buhari!!!

I'll vote for if Buhari is the man. I don't care if the man is old, or a northerner, i'll vote for him. I even want to see a person from another party being the president. Even if it is for a minute, buhari will rule this country once again.

if we sincerely want change in this country, people like fashola, oshiomole, akpabio who are the best performing governors should be those to be choosen by their respective parties as flagbearers, not people that will set us back or play ethnic/religious card.

I wonder how age has become a factor for becoming a president. Jonathan who is in his 50's, what has he done so far for the country? what has people like Dimeji Bankole, Farouk Lawan etc who i believe are in their 40's impacted in the lives of the Nigerian youth? Absolutely nothing! Corruption knows no age. Buhari should be given the opportunity to rule this country. Who cares if he is 100years? what Nigerians want is a true leader who will liberate this country from the hands of PDP.

SAI BUHARI 2015!

Buhari without Idiagbon is like a car without engine. Buhari was a figure head president. He is a woman and very clueless. He does not have an idea of how to move this country forward. That he is popular among the uneducated Almajiris in the north is a non issue. Jonathan will beat him hands down in 2015, sorry to all of you haters.

A 73yr old that admitted he could not operate a simple computer system in 2011. He will cry again.q

Same here. Tribune is PDP's mouthpiece in and out. The latest news was that APC won't adopt the zoning agenda. Even if Buhari is finally going to emerge, its too early because CPC is yet to revoke their name.

If Buhari is a non starter as far as 2015 is concerned, how come PDP & Ebele's attack dogs keep baying for his blood with bad press while a younger, 'more electable' even if gworo chewing 'eyes on 2015' Tambuwal gets no bad press undecided
Why all the demonization of Buhari with unverified lies?
Ebele knows those who can unseat him come 2015 and those who are just newspaper candidates cheesy
SAI BUHARI

HOWEVER,NIGERIA @ this juncture in her national history needs more than a firm leader like Buhari
WE NEED TO CONVOKE A SNC AND REDRAW THE CONDITIONS OF OUR EXISTENCE AND TOGETHERNESS IF WE ARE TO STAY AS ONE NATION

Why are so many people especially PDP members afraid of Buhari? Age has nothing to do with performance and I believe Buhari is the person we have at the moment to stamp out corruption, instil discipline and patriotism back to Nigerians.
The major work to be done is to connect with the youth because PDP has done a lot of damage to Buhari's reputation especial in the minds of the youths by blackmailing him as a terrorist and religious bigot. There is a great deal of work to be done in this area.
