*sighs* I have one question for you, do you want to have a career as a research scientist? Think well before you answer this question because the information i'll reveal to you is highly dependent on your answer.

Well, the truth is there is a huge difference between the med lab scientist & the med microbiologist in nigeria. Although its not suppose to be so, the peculiarities of the healthcare system in this country has made it difficult for microbiology graduates to have any form of clinical practice. The issue here is internship.

Medical laboratory scientist go for a one year internship programme where they are exposed to real life clinical cases. No such provision is made for the Bsc holder in microbiology. I would have told you to forget it, but its still possible for you to have a career there if you know somebody within the system that can facilitate your entry.

As for lecturing, it depends on the grade you graduated with. Its either a first class or a very strong second class upper (above 4.0). Besides you have to be loyal to the ogas at the top (the PhD holders) to be considered, because a fresh graduate needs to be recommended by the senior lecturers in his/her school before he/she can be retained. As for private universities, well, try your luck.

Keep your options open. Don't restrict yourself to any area until you get a job, then specialise in that field where you have gainful employment. Initially biotechnology/industrial microbiology was my interest. But now the story is different.

Anyway make sure you graduate with a good grade.

@Mr.Sinister..pls i also need to know our fate as am also a microbiology student.Although i prefer Microbiology to Med.lab becos the course has so many career opportunities and i happen to be the adventurous type without being restricted to a particula field.

Exactly!!! Microbiology have many carrer opportunities. And because u said u are an adventurous type,Microbiology field is for people like u.
See,just av an open mind abt this course. There is hardly any science field u won't fit into, especially at higher degree level. Talk of Research,Micrbiology still have a lot of uncovered grounds oh.
Meanwhile,I will advice u,na only advice oh,consider an area of specialization in the area of Environment. It maybe Environmental MCB,Environmental Science,Pollution Control,Conservation of Natural Resources,Public Health/Epidemology etc. These areas have better prospects and are more relevant to problems facing Africa and even d world at large.

You can start small by checking it out on the internet, google some of these areas. Prepare for what u wanna do at this early stage,it will give u closure to what to do after graduation.

I agree that the career options in mcb are much, but the issue here is viability. How many of these numerous Career options are viable in nigeria? The ones you mentioned above, how many microbiologists do you know are currently gainfully employed as professionals in those fields? Its not by checking google. The fact is that the system operating in nigeria for these professions present some peculiar challenges that the 4yr bsc programme in mcb does not prepare the student for.

Microbiology is not a professional course both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, this is infact a problem. It limits our usefulness in industry. I am not trying to discourage you guys, but pls don't be naïve. Prepare adequately for the harsh reality that'll hit you after you leave school. Acquire a skill, position yourself to fulfil a need in your immediate environment and emancipate yourself from poverty.

You may not believe me,but there are a lot of Microbiologists operating in these areas I mentioned above(I'm speaking from experience). MCB isn't a professional course, but there are area of specializations that can make you 'Hamma'. An area like Environment is a wide field, what about Waste Management? Etc?
If you studied a professional course, and you don't create a niche for yourself, you won't stand out. So the key word here is Niche. Create one for yourself, think outside the box.

This your last paragraph is classic. Every graduate, especially in Nigeria, should aquire a skill! Every graduate, even the ones that studied Medicine and Surgery. The level on unemployment in our country right now pass what the goverment can handle alone.

The bolded part is true but from 300L till graduating year is clinical laboratory posting where u start witnessing first hand Medical training and cases.

Ofcourse, there is hope for every Nigerian graduate as regards Job availability. Though, unemployment rate is still very high in Nigeria, one can still secure a job irrespective of the course they read in school by putting in extra effort in self development after graduation. You may check out the wonderful guide outlined on the following link; http://campusportalng.com/nysc/nysc-passing-out-tips-to-attract-a-job/1473/
