Bisi Fayemi(ekiti Ac Guber Candidate's Wife) Bags Chieftaincy Title In Enugu by Truequest(m): 5:36pm On Apr 30, 2008
Wife of Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Ekiti State Action Congress gubernatorial Candidate in the April 2007 elections, Mrs. Bisi-Adeleye Fayemi, was last weekend, conferred with a chieftaincy title by the Traditional Ruler and Igwe in Council of Imezi Owa, Ezeagu Central Local Government Area of Enugu State, H.R.H Igwe S.A.C Ozoeze, Onwa Na Etili Owa II of Imezi Owa.

Mrs Fayemi who is the Executive Director, Africa Women Development Fund (AWDF) a non government organisation based in Accra, Ghana, was rewarded with the Chieftaincy title of ‘Ochiorah of Imezi Owa’ Enugu State of Nigeria in recognition of her tremendous financial assistance to widows through her organisation in partnership with another NGO, Women Aid Collective (WACOL).

In his speech at the occasion, Igwe Ozoeze explained to the gathering that the entire people of Imezi Owa and WACOL have decided to honour an illustrious African Lady, Mrs. Bisi Fayemi.

The Igwe explained further that “though the government of Nigeria has spent a lot of money in alleviating poverty, it did not get to the grassroots, but with the efforts of the AWDF and WACOL, Mrs. Fayemi has been able to put smiles on the faces of widows and other women in difficult circumstances, as a result, the lives of these women and their dependants have tremendously improved.”

The Igwe, who was supported by other Igwes from three other communities in the state, was very elated and happy with Mrs. Fayemi for bringing succour to the widows in the area through her organisation.

“We and some of them (widows) are gathered here therefore to behold our benefactor face to face and express in concrete terms our appreciation of her good deeds, works and genuine love for us all by honouring her with a befitting Chieftaincy title –OCHIORAH of Imezi Owa, Enugu State of Nigeria.”

Ochiora means ‘a leader of the people’.

The installation ceremony commenced with the traditional gun salute followed by the breaking of kolanuts after the Igwes had been ushered to their seats.

Many cultural groups performed at the occasion in addition to a standby highlife orchestra which gave beautiful rendition at the occasion.

About eight women widow groups also performed to the admiration of the new chief. They showed their appreciation to their benefactor by acrobatic displays.

The installation proper witnessed the dressing up of the new chief with her traditional regalia and beads. The Igwe later completed the installation by decorating her with her official head beads, the red cap, horse tail and traditional hand fan with the insignia of her office, Ochiorah.

With the installation complete, the Ochiorah danced round the venue, greeting the Igwes and everybody present.

In her response, Mrs. Fayemi thanked the community for the great honor done her.

She said she was overwhelmed with emotions and could only thank them for the great honour.

She told the gathering that she had accepted the chieftaincy title with all the responsibility attached.

She accepted to be a sister, daughter and a mother to the community. She said she had always wanted to help needy women all her life and that she enjoyed what she was doing and would continue to do more given this type of appreciation.

Mrs Fayemi informed the gathering that her organisation had supported 575 women groups in 41 countries including women in her native Ekiti State in Nigeria.

She explained that AWDF decided to support an organisation like WACOL because it is genuine and has noble intentions.

Mrs. Fayemi later presented gifts to the Igwes present and the widow groups. She was in turn presented with gifts by the widows and the Igwe.

In his own remark, Igwe Barrister Raphael S.N Eze, Ochendo I of Obigo Obukpa, in Nsukka L.G.A, a former Law lecturer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, who came with members of his cabinet to grace the occasion, told the gathering that he was not surprised about the chieftaincy title given to Mrs. Fayemi as he was quite aware of her good deeds which has also affected the live of widows in his Nsukka domain positively.
