Is He Discouraging Me From traveling To USA? by fubbyy(m): 10:27am On Jun 02, 2013
My cousin is living in the usa for about 6 years now and I'm planning to travel to usa after my nysc next year but the stories coming from him is not encouraging at all

Anytime we have a chat all he tells me is how much he miss and wish coming back to nigeria, he said life in the usa is not what they seems to be,he advice me to stay back since I'm already sure of a good job after service

These are his complains

1... Everybody minds his/her own business unlike naija where you mingle and make friends easily, therefore he's more lonely there than nigeria

2.... He's not as free as he is in nigeria, freedom in the usa is limited while naija freedom is unlimited

3... He get girls easily in nigeria,in nigeria he talk to a girl anywhere, inside bus, church, street, class, market,in the usa you can't just stop a girl anyhow and talk to her,if you do you might get arrested for a sexual harassment

4... You can work and make money but you hardly get rich,he asked me a question which I consider as a fact, he asked me if I've ever seen an american returnee whom is rich, which I've never seen
ETC....

Sometimes I just feel like this guy is just discouraging me,is he?

Having proper immigration papers is directly proportional to a good quality of life where you hv the option of not being stuck in a menial job.
Re: Is He Discouraging Me From traveling To USA? by worry359(m): 10:35am On Jun 02, 2013
He is telling the truth like it is.
There is no pot of gold overseas for everyone.
Yes a few do well but many live in poverty even in rich places.
Many will say how well they are doing because they are afraid to admit that the dream became a nightmare.
But many people only listen to the good news and waste money on illconceved travel.

Your cousin is a kid and talking nonsenses, you can make friends in USA, mingle freely if you have time, just like in Nigeria, the true meaning of freedom exist in USA, what freedom do you have in Nigeria that is lacking in US?

Reason number 4 is even more ridiculous, so approaching a girl on the street with no respect is better?

There is no sense in all the garbage he told you.

If its all bad in US then ask him to come back to Nigeria to enjoy all he is missing.

Your cousin is pretty much telling you the truth. If uou have the same attitude then you can expect the same kind of experiences or even worse.Freedom is no different than it is in Naija. There is no place that you can't go....but then there are places that you would choose not to go...in Naija because of tribe...in the US because of race. On point 3...you just can't talk to people anyhow period. It depends on the girl you speak to anyhow...she may most likely shout you down or get her peeps to give you a beat down..or if she decides to call the police only Heaven knows how many charges you would be facing but you would be locked up....and if felony charges....deported after serving sentence....just like that.America is no bed of roses and has many laws...which they enforce...and no oga at d top is above the law. Look well before you leap or you end up stranded like so many others...homeless or almost homeless.

nice 1 bro, but why haven't I seen a super rich usa returnee before? not that they don't exist but they are rare unlike their european counterparts who's blowing money up and down here in ph, does that mean getting rich in america is hard?

No the reason is simple, you are not safe in Nigeria if you came back with your money, is either you are kidnapped or killed by armed rubbers. They rather remain in US where they can enjoy their money with little fear of kidnappers or robbed at the bank.

@Post

If you are not going to USA with a green card (permanent residency)in hand or you don't have USA citizenship, then you are in for some real suffering. If you however have one of the documents I just listed, I say go try your luck. USA has its ups and downs just like any other country in the world. I have lived in the USA for over 13 years now though I am temporarily in Nigeria serving my fatherland (NYSC). So, I know what I speak of.

As for what your cousin said, it is true. As for approaching girls, if you approach American ladies the crass way I have noticed many Nigerian men approach women in Nigeria, you will not get a date or any positive results. Remember, there are men from various nationalities and racial groups living in America and Americans generally don't discriminate against unmarried ladies like Nigerians do hence women there will not just date any guy they see because they are not so desperate like the average Nigerian lady is.

Another thing you have to realize is that America is not completely out of the economic recession so finding well paying jobs can be tough even for those born and raised there. Employers are slashing wages too to cut costs. Furthermore, we pay taxes in America and the more money you make, the more uncle SAM - the American tax system - will take out of your pay check.

Don't get caught up in credit card debt. If you do, you will end up in a never ending cycle of debt if you cannot pay back. There are many enticing quality products to buy in America for affordable prices and there is always one sale or the other going on. It can be quite tempting to buy and buy some more and end up spending money on items one does not need. So watch out.

There are many more things to be said about USA but I am tired of typing and gotta go. Just pray about it and don't just focus on USA if you indeed want to travel out. Consider Canada as well and other countries where you think you will have opportunities including here on the African continent. Things are tough in Nigeria. I know because I am living here for now. If one is not the child of a well-to-do person in a position of power, life can be tough. The electricity in Nigeria sucks especially because the weather is so hot and there's no constant electricity to enjoy AC or fan except one turns on the generator. If you really want to leave Nigeria, just plan properly and remember no place on earth is easy. Its just that, some countries - especially the advanced ones - offer better opportunities than others without you always having to know some Oga at the top like is the case in Nigeria.

All the best!

I have family members (cousins) in the US who are well off. I mean very established. They visit home every year like we do for a few weeks. These people have properties and businesses in Nigeria that they don't talk about for fear of being kidnapped or killed. They will not trade US for Nigeria.

Not everyone discuss their achievements in Nigeria, its too risky. If your cousin really misses home, I'm sure "emirates will be happy to fly him back.

The western countries are generally like how your Cousin Prescribe. Even if you make all the money, you will usually be bored especially when you have spent a considerable amount of your life in Naija.

Visiting and/or tourism, is usually the best, not staying for a long period of time.

And like a poster said, it would be far easier if you are going with a PR card.

If you are married, then the issue of approaching women should not be a concern.

Places like Houston in Texas is just like Naija, there is a huge Naija population there, and you can party like you are in Oshodi.

If you can cope with everything your Cousin said, then fine, but he is saying the truth.

You do not need to listen to loud mouths like Mrs knowitall.
If you follow some of her other posts she is just chattering woman with nohing to say but not knowing when to shut up!

There are a few people who make money but many do not.
Nothing in life is easy and your original advice was sensible.

Read all the posts and make up your own mind, then live with the result for good or bad.

yes I have a good job waiting for me in 2014 after my nysc, its a very nice job with good salary but you know when an average naija guy have the opportunity of traveling abroad(yankee 4 that matter)it will be very difficult trading it for anything

This papers you guys talk about,I taught usa is full of blacks, does immigration goes around tasking every black to know about the papers, I taught it only happens in europe where every black man can be spotted once he enter the street

In usa how do they differentiate citizens and foreigners when they look at them? Does citizens also need papers?

Everybody, their mother and their mother's friend are now giving advice on life in foreign countries. Including those who don't even own passports. SMDH

@OP
I don't live in the US, but I have friends and relatives there who are doing very fine. It depends on the state/city you are going to, and what you want to make of your life while you are there. Just make sure you are a legal immigrant. I believe the best way to go there is through school, unless you have a family member that can sponsor you. If you do your homework well, you should be fine.

Your cousin's advice is pretty dumb
1. People might not be as friendly as in Nigeria, but you can still make friends if you are sociable. It aint rocket science.

2. The US is an organized/developed country where the rule of law thrives. Nigeria, not so much. It's quite certain that your cousin prefers lawlessness. Who knows, he probably has criminal tendencies.

3. Not applicable to me.

4. Personally, I'd rather be comfortable/modestly rich in a safe, clean and urban country with high quality of life, than be stinkingly rich in an unsafe country with low quality of life.
