So Ibadan city finally got it's first international shopping mall today - Shop Rite - and guess what, the whole town was there for shopping today! As seen above, it looks like a crusade down there...LOL!

Its understandable since it just opened. I guess only few are there to actually buy stuffs, others are on sightseeing. A few pickpockets and beggars might be in that crowd as well

No big deal!

New malls, hospitals, hotel, restaurant, archade etc usually attract lots of customers, window shoppers and tourists. It happens in NewYork, Tokyo, Jo'borg, Shanghai, London and even Lagos.

This is coupled with the fact that this is the first of its kind in the unplanned city of Ibadan.

As days, weeks and months go by, the human traffic will slowly fade away. While they wait for the next new thing.

Right now, we should be worried about how much customers Shoprite is going to prevent from patronizing the local traders.

Hard times ahead!

I will rather shop in pack n shop or emporium or any other mall on earth than shoprite. If i every nigerian taught like me, by now MTN, shoprite, dstv and the others would have been sent packing. Idiotic racist south africans.

That's like a new photo studio open for buisness in Ibadan.80% of pictures coming from peeps there, will all be taken in shoprtie.lots of PM and updates from folks there would be"Chilling in shoprite" "Shoprite tinz"
To save everyone the headace, shoprite management should fix a token for pictures taken within their premises in Ibadan.

Finally,Some people once they enter that shoprite their accent comes out from nowhere.grin

LOL. My dear old city of Ibadan. . . . Who knows what part of town it is located? Is it a mall with several other shops and (and possibly a cinema), or is it merely a stand-alone Shoprite super-store like the one in Surulere?

Well, I'm not sure there is enough economic 'breadth' in that rustic, dusty (but nonetheless charming) old city to sustain this long term. Most people are there to take pictures and update their facebook or blackberry DP, while a sizable number came to do 'feasibility study' for a soon-to-boom shoplifting enterprise. Actual shoppers there might be less than 10% of the crowd.

Shoprite, a South African business, is making it big in Nigeria.

However, if the trend of xenophobic attacks on Nigeria continues unabated in South Africa, and Nigerians decide to retaliate or get emotional, I don't know what may become of SA concerns like this.
