Hello guys! I'm just curious as to what kind or genre of Nigerian movie would appeal to you and what kind of Nigerian movies would you not mind going to the cinemas to see?

would you like to see new faces
would you be happy to see well made Action, Adventure, science fiction etc or what do you think generally?
Re: Nollywood In The Future by VillageBoi(m): 5:35pm On Jul 06, 2013

My own be -

Action = 100% NO
Adventure = 100% yes
Sci-Fi = Kind of - with hardly any special effects then YES... full of special effects - hell NO!

Oh eerrmmmm new faces 100% yes; if you can get them to actually ACT... old faces - boring, overused and most can't act.

Absolutely!

Even though all our films are technically 'independent'. We just need to be far, far more 'creative'.

Thanks but na just my quick small rant. I'm sure others will also mention the kind of films they want to see.
Re: Nollywood In The Future by searchcorp(m): 9:26pm On Jul 07, 2013
Truth is; in the grand scheme of things nollywood is actually just a bunch of independent film makers. perhaps we need another "nollywood" - body to cater for better film production and distribution.

i would agree with you but on the area of "NO ACTION" i beg to differ because i believe there is no genre that cant be explored in our culture.

in the area of short films ive had a lot of fallouts with my friends in the field cause they dont believe in it. if only they know how important it is to keep making short films, long story short i want to see new and innovative filmmakers and actors.
Re: Nollywood In The Future by directorsolomon(m): 11:14pm On Jul 07, 2013
Talking about short films, here is a 1st draft of a short i wanna make just to introduce some University students to the art of film making, please read and let me know what you think

I/E. SCHOOL QUADRANGLE AND CAR PARK

Ext: Department car park
Effiong a young lecturer emerges from his car as he is
approached by a student; Kate who helps him with a bag, KATE
is obviously the bookworm type with nerdy glasses Effiong
obviously has a slight headache but tries to fight it.

KATE
Hello sir, we have been waiting for
you for over twenty minutes

EFFIONG
Yes I know and I have 6 missed
calls from you to back that up

He locks the car and puts the key in his pocket as they start
making their way into the building

KATE
I'm sorry sir ...are we still up
for a class… sir you look like you
are tired.

EFFIONG
A bloody headache and I'm guessing
that you are about to make it worse

A student walks by as Mr. Effiong calls his attention

EFFIONG (CONT'D)
Hey grab an aspirin from the main
office will you? Bring it to my
office.

STUDENT
Yes sir.

KATE
Sorry sir…

EFFIONG
Thank you, I will be at the
class as soon as I grab an aspirin

KATE
Ok sir, sir, have you heard about
the latest paranormal phenomenon
Said to be taking place around our
region
2.

EFFIONG
Oh my! Kate! Not another one of
your internet obsessions, I hope
its not the butterfly effect this
time.

KATE
But the butterfly effect is true
sir.

EFFIONG
What is it this time?

KATE
(Glances at her phone) Says here
it's the Time slip Phenomenon, I
thought you might have an idea

EFFIONG
No I don't but it sounds like a
hoax… another internet ....
The student walks into his office with an aspirin and hands
it to Mr. Effiong

EFFIONG (CONT'D)
I tell you what! I will take a look
at it after class…

As if that was all she wanted to hear she jumps up and makes
for the door

KATE
Thank you sir, see you in class

Effiong throws the pill in his mouth as he throws his head
back, takes a swig of the bottled water on his table and
stares into the distance

CUT TO:

INT. EFFIONGS OFFICE DAY

Effiong wakes with a start as his brain tries to naturally
reboot itself, he glances at his watch and curses as he
realizes he is late for class and makes for the door

CUT TO:
3.

INT. DEPARTMENT CORRIDOR, DAY

Effiong saunters to the corridor, the atmosphere is thick but
devoid of people although he is oblivious of it, he turns the
corner and see a few people in the distance looking out of
the window

EFFIONG
Alright people lets move in for
class

There is no response

EFFIONG (CONT'D)
You heard me lets go in people...

He is taken mid sentence as he wonders what they are looking
at through the window, he moves to the nearest window and
looks out... nothing out of the ordinary except for people
transfixed, he is now a little bit concerned but curious

EFFIONG (CONT'D)
What are you guys...

He stares at the people at the window and realizes that no
one has even looked at his direction.

EFFIONG (CONT'D)
Hey! (Raising his voice) you all
know how i feel about pranks...
i...

He looks out of the window again and decides to go
downstairs.

CUT TO:

EXT. DEPARTMENT OPEN PARK, DAY

As he emerges from the building to the open, the sight is too
much to take in, there are people scattered around the open
all frozen and looking at a particular direction

Effiong collects himself and moves towards to open park with
a bit of anger swelling inside him he yells out

EFFIONG
(shouting) LOOK!!! If this
is some kind of prank or
sick TV show i want you
to know that i am not
buying it ok!
4.

The is dead silence...

He finally moves towards one of the frozen persons who got
his attention, with a little more courage he moves closer to
the figure stares at it for a bit and decides to touch...

What happens next gave Effiong a hair raising fright.

The frozen beings eyes rolled from its original position
towards him...

As he moves back in total fright he bumps into someone

...KATE...

The both shout and react with total horror and surprise

EFFIONG (CONT'D)
Kate!!! Wha... what... what is
going on? Where were you?

KATE
Sir im scared

EFFIONG
Where were you?

KATE
Sir im scared

EFFIONG
What happened here?

KATE
Im so scared, im so scared, im so
scared...

Effiong notices that she is not focused and very shaken, he
moves in to grab her and snap her back into focus

EFFIONG
Hey!!! What happened?

KATE
I dont know... i was in the toilet
my phone stopped working and...
everywhere was quite and... and...

Her eyes widened in its sockets

KATE (CONT'D)
Time laps...? (Looks at him) the
PHENOMENON!
5.

EFFIONG
Get in the car lets go get help

Effiong moves towards his car and unlocks it.

KATE
It wont work!

EFFIONG
What do you mean it wont work

KATE
I remember reading that nothing
will work... my phone stopped
working... everything electric,
electronic or machinery nothing
will work.

EFFIONG
Thats nonsense

He gets into his car and turns on the ignition... nothing he
tries again but not even a click, he steps out

EFFIONG (CONT'D)
Lets give it a push... kate?

Kate is no more there

EFFIONG (CONT'D)
Kate!!! Where the hell are you?

The camera shows a very wide shot where he is the only
animate being in the shot.

all we hear is Effiong yelling her name as the sound decays

CUT TO:

EXT. SCHOOL DRIVEWAY DAY

We see a collage of shots showing desolate but quiet place,
shots of people frozen, wind blowing papers on the ground etc

Effiong head fills up the shot as he looks disheveled,
confused, scared and clueless... he turns to the expanse of
road... takes a deep breath and starts walking briskly
towards the horizon...

Our shot cranes up to show the state of emptiness Effiong is
walking toward...

FADE OUT.

And I absolutely support your response of NO action. Seriously, we just need to be more creative. I would personally like Nigeria to do biopics, replicate real-life events (Aba women riot, boko haram stuff, a president's administration etc.).

I'm always skeptical about these kinda stories. If filmmakers can make it in a way to change mindset of nigerians and how to do things right! Etc.....me Likey but if it is another 'blame the government fest' like we've been getting all these while, they can forget it (its not gonna change anything rather, it will further increase under-development of the country). IMO.

Villageboi, i agree with you on the 'adventure' genre. Overall, i think they should just be creative as well! We can even invent genres to suit some totally different storylines (we don't have to follow follow hollywood). Afterall, we have juju, afropop, fuji etc, which are not obtainable in western music.

anyway, you don't need 'mike adenuga riches' for that. No be copyright you wan buy na, all you need is rights to make movies based on the books. That's not expensive to get (especially in Nigeria)

I disagree with the bolded. Making biopics or real-life events is not to provide solutions to the circumstances that happened then, but the joy is to replicate that era, and put the viewers into the mental state of that period, and make a new set of generation relive history, this time onscreen. If at the end, it provides solutions and points to this and that for government to do, fine; and if it eventually results to 'blaming the govt fests', well, no problem so far it is kept real in all truths and ppl that experienced such event at that time can testify to how close the movie is to the event. Bringing history onscreen helps ppl not to repeat past mistakes in the present which is detrimental to the future. That's my opinion.

'IRON LADY', 'LINCOLN', 'ARGO' are good examples.

I will properly join the convo again when I get home as I hate typing on my phone - man still dey bush shaa!

Anyway you should be able to buy or 'option' the rights to any book you like in Naija. Contact the author or publisher.

I have a book that I def want to option as I've written part of the script.
Even here options can start from as little as ONE dollar - of course you'll never get that price for a Harry Potter book. Just saying it shouldn't cost much. The book I want, I wouldn't want to pay more than $100 for a 3-5 yr option. And pref less than $50 to start principal photography within a year from the date of option.

Just try shaa, you never know how it will go.

i know right. Movies are fictions afterall. But not in Nigeria where people are gullible to the extent of believing movies. Even the educated ones! Nairaland sef, you will see someone comparing real life health issues with 'grey's anatomy'. I get you, but we don't really need anything hammering more stereotypes into our heads. If its not a movie proffering solutions, we don't need it.

But if the movies will be like 'last flight to abuja' for example, where we see the common mistakes nigerian make at work that lead to such fatal consequences (we were shown a pilot who wanted to charge his battery, thereby 'smuggling' it on the flight. - note battery is an explosive which is not allowed on planes anywhere around the world. Then another bad work practice where records of aircraft maintenance are not up to date. etc). And not some 'government not maintaining aircrafts' bullshiit(as if government are the ones working at the airports).

I really love biopics/'real life events movies' when it treats the topic as it should be treated! And that's why i look forward to Izu Ojukwu's 76.
I get everything you mean though. And just as you pointed out in the bolded; they are meant to make us realise our mistakes and stop us from making such in the future. They are not meant to make us push blames. - in a society where that is the order of the day, such movies will only further buttress 'our points' and i don't see such movies changing anything. That is the general perspective of the people before, so what's the point? Nothing to reflect on....

Biopics needs to be treated with care, not some poor research work like hollywood always do with 'real life events movies' of other countries. Eg Argo!

Ok DirectorSolomon, I've read your script 3 times in a row just now and for some reason I still don't fully get it. I mean I do actually get what you are trying to do BUT the slight issue I have is the 'time slip phenomenon'.

In one instance the people are 'frozen' - that's all well and good BUT in the case of Kate - she disappears completely - it's not a long enough script for a 'switch of event' so stick to one - just let them all freeze.

I'm also not convinced about the reactions. When Mr Effiong realises the kids in the corridor are 'frozen' he first thinks its a prank; that's ok BUT when he goes downstairs and EVERYONE is frozen... by then the realisation that something is 'really' not right should have kicked in and he shouldn't still be thinking it's a prank. As a teacher I think he should have much better observational skills.

Oh and when he talks with kate after she's had a sh*t lol. My reaction is the same as with every other girl in a 'horror' movie - I want to slap the annoying b*tch - Teacher man dey try talk to her and all she doing is going on and on with her "I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared...
You get my drift. Even me wey no be actor I go by force enta the fim dash the girl one hot Navy slap... just because she's become irritating at that point!

Not much to say about the script; it's ok but quite a bit of work can still be done on it. It also kinda feels incomplete... there is definitely something missing... it doesn't fulfill 'something' by the end. And I'm not even sure what that 'something' is.

My question to you is - How do you propose to carry out these effects of frozen people and how do you propose to film it? Because that is the only thing that will be pretty difficult in this film. The truth is the amout of planning and rotoscoping to make that look believable is going to be hell.
Remember what you've written are not 'locked-off' shots, so with Mr Effiong moving a lot how will you make it work?

thanks a lot, i'm grateful for your time and inputs, however its one thing to explain the concern you have but i wont id rather not cause i believe that if the reader in not quite clear then i did not communicate well enough which its why i said its my "first draft"
the "time slip phenomenon" gist is still under research and i fully understand what you mean by the "b*tch" disappearing totally lol.

your "im scared comment was quite funny and like i said i did not communicate kate's frame of mind as regards her repeating the same statement as she was in shock too.(will work on that too)

the fact that something is missing, not fulfilled is the unconventional THEME of the short film as would be visually suggested also with the use of wide angle lenses and shot angles grin

and finally as regards pulling off the effect... the trick is... there is no effect (well.. as regards CGI tho) if you catch my drift... but im gonna need the help of a lot of people tho.

Have no worries if you write something and it isn't clear to a reader... we all do it; bit by bit we get to write better about the images we 'see' in our heads... yes, sometimes it is diffucult to convay that image on paper.

The time slip is totally fine; I'm sure everyone understood that. It's a short film so I think it's best to just keep it as the 'frozen' thingy and not make an unexplained/confusing change by introducing something else at the end. I'm not saying it can't be done; it can be... just not the way this is written at the moment.

For a feature length film you have the 'time' to make all sorts of 'changes/switches', that time is not a luxury one has for a short film. For a short you really only have time to make just ONE solid point. (I'll add a trailer at end of post)

directorsolomon: your "im scared comment was quite funny and like i said i did not communicate kate's frame of mind as regards her repeating the same statement as she was in shock too.(will work on that too)

Lol, yeah some of the reactions are to be worked on but you did say it's a first draft so its easy to overlook and it's no big deal... yet!

directorsolomon: the fact that something is missing, not fulfilled is the unconventional THEME of the short film as would be visually suggested also with the use of wide angle lenses and shot angles grin

I can't lie... I didn't understand the above sentence. When I said 'something is missing' I don't mean anything from the aesthetics of the film and the planned look. I mean more like the 'substance'.

Where's Speedy & Sholay? When you guys read it did it feel like there is something just not there? Or is it just me?

For wide angle lens. If I were shooting this I personally wouldn't use one for anything other than a really wide shot. The aesthetics of such a lens would give a very different meaning to and 'close up or medium' shots.

Have you seen my short film 'Sweet Sixteen'? I did use a wide angle lens for a close up because I wanted to compress and distort the world of the lead male character the moment he realises he is own his own in the cafe and not really talking to anyone but his 'crazy' mind.

directorsolomon: and finally as regards pulling off the effect... the trick is... there is no effect (well.. as regards CGI tho) if you catch my drift... but im gonna need the help of a lot of people tho.

What I meant was are you doing the 'effect' in-camera or CGI/VFX?

.
.

I really want you to see this film below because it's a brilliant indie sci-fi in which they could and did make many 'changes/switches'... they started with the 'sense' of smell... and one after another the human race lost all senses. You do not see it in the trailer but the film is so beautifully and brilliantly told (and I think there is no mago-mago CGI lol). Just like 'Another Earth' (trailer also posted) These definitely ARE the type of sci-fi kind of films we Nigerians should be making since the truth is we are complete and utter sh*t when it comes to CGI/VFX - let's not lie about it lol.
