THE National Judicial Council (NJC), on
Monday, announced the sack of the
acting Chief Judge of Abia State,
Justice Shadrack Nwanosike, for
falsifying his date of birth.
It also set up a five-member panel to
look into the report of low
performance by some judges.
The panel, according to a source, had
put a secretariat in place in the
council and is about sending
invitation to affected judges.
The membership of the panel was still
under wrap at the time of going to
press, due to what a source called the
“sensitive nature of the assignment.”
The affected judges, according to the
source, were being asked to come and
justify why they should not be
dismissed.
The council also announced the
appointment of four new chief judges
for Federal Capital Territory (FCT),
Rivers, Jigawa and Katsina states.
According to a statement signed by
the council’s spokesperson, Soji Oye,
“The NJC, under the chairmanship of
Justice Mukhtar, at its 63rd meeting
held between July 17 and 18, 2013
recommended the compulsory
retirement from office of Justice
Nwanosike, the acting Chief Judge of
Abia State.
“The decision is sequel to the findings
of the council that Justice Nwanosike
falsified his date of birth, which
invariably affected his retirement age.
“The council, during the meeting, also
considered and deliberated on the
report of its Committee on
Performance Evaluation of Judicial
Officers of the Superior Courts of
Record in the Federation.
“At the end of deliberation, the
council constituted a five-man
committee comprising its members to
invite judicial officers with very low
performance or non-performance, to
appear before it, to show cause why
they should not be removed from
office.”
Other recommended appointments
by the council included the president,
Customary Court of Appeal, Taraba
State; two Khadis for the Sharia Court
of Appeal, Kebbi State; two Khadis for
the Sharia Court of Appeal, Sokoto
State; one judge for the Customary
Court of Appeal, Delta State and two
judges for the Customary Court of
Appeal, Ebonyi State.
