Nigerian Youths And E-activism by Nobody: 4:39pm On Aug 01, 2013 |
NIGERIAN YOUTHS AND E-ACTIVISM I really find it hard to put my thoughts down with a pen but these issues of #childnotbride e-actvism by Nigerians especially the youths has caused me a lot of pondering, that I had to force my pen to paper. I would make my point clear and straight with brevity- I find a serious fault in the approach Nigerians have recently resort to take in tackling many socio-political issues. My gross lies especially with the youths (which I am a part), I doubt if we are ready to grab the mantle of leadership of our country. We are no more leaders of tomorrow but leaders of now-that song we sang was years ago, back in primary school. Even if my earlier assertion were to be wrong and we actually become leaders now, I sincerely doubt if we have the integrity and spirit it takes to move our country forward-evidenced by our lazy e- activism approach to issues affecting our nation. Now, I have few questions: How many of those clamoring on twitter, sending broadcast messages on blackberry and posting on facebook actually went out today to actively participate in a rally? What is the outcome of similar campaigns in the past? And more importantly: How many of these same people went out to vote in the last general elections? I want it to be clear to everyone that it is our apathy to political processes of our country that cost us the situations we find ourselves today. If we keep seating with our e no concern me attitude, crazy fellows will keep hijacking sensitive leadership positions; do crazy things and implement crazy laws all at the expense of the common multitude. We have been seeing the manifestations of our inactions, most recent being the rivers state assembly saga and now the senate’s legitimization of child marriage. My submission is this: we the youth need to be pro-active by supporting and voting credible leaders and stop being reactive in a lazy fashion with e-activism. God bless Nigeria, Bernard Fatoye http://bernardfatoye./2013/07/20/e-activism-childnotbride/ |
