WELCOME TO THE LIVE UPDATES

Tonight FC Barcelona welcome Atlético Madrid to Camp Nou for
the second leg of the Supercopa de España, having drawn the first
leg 1-1 in Madrid. Atlético put Barça to the test in the Vicente
Calderon, with the Blaugrana struggling under the intense
pressure of La Liga’s strongest defense and the hostile colchonero
stadium. Barça held on, however, and key subs by Martino in the
second half were able to exploit a tiring Atlético Madrid back line
and earn a vital away goal. Although no team ever comes into the Camp Nou confident of a win, with Atléti fresh off a 5-0
demolition of Rayo Vallecano and Barça struggling to a 1-0 victory
at La Rosaleda, the “other” Madrid team might feel they can hold
off their formidable hosts and nick a win.

In their first match-up, Atléti stifled Barça’s attack with a rock-solid, very compact block. The center-backs and midfield destroyers teamed up to deny any space to Xavi, Iniesta, and Messi,
completely nullifying Barcelona’s more passive creators and
forcing the ball out wide. The Atlético forwards were the key,
tracking back to help isolate Barça’s players in wide positions and double- or triple-teaming the wingers, but then breaking quickly forward on counters to expose Alves and Alba. Diego Simeone’s side will be looking to replicate this tactical success, though perhaps mollifying their intense pressure to avoid losing shape in the second half.

For their part, Barça must react by bringing dynamism and
verticality to this return leg, players whose constant movement and forward runs will disrupt Atlético Madrid’s carefully organized block and generate space to circulate the ball. Players like Neymar, Cesc, Alexis, and Sergi Roberto all have these qualities and have all thrived in preseason and Martino’s first few official matches. These more direct players will be key for Tata in this match and in this season overall, as they offer a way to unlock the physical, disciplined defenses Barça will continue to encounter at elite levels.

While Martino’s back line is fairly predictable, much of the
decisions in midfield and forward selection will come down to
whether Lionel Messi should start. The recently injury-ridden
Argentine “trained harder with the players who didn’t feature
against Málaga,” according to Martino, and has been given the
medical green light. It would probably be prudent not to play
Messi and not risk aggravating his injuries, but it is unclear if Tata
is ready to bench an eager and demanding Leo Messi. He has,
however, been firm with his careful introduction of Neymar,
saying, “My aspiration is for him to be a Barça player for 10 to 12
years, not for him to fix my problems in one match.” Martino did admit that Neymar is ready to start matches, although the
decision has not been made yet.
Should neither Messi or Neymar start, expect Fàbregas to once
again play the role of backup Messi, a false “false 9,” if you will. I
personally prefer Cesc in midfield, where his vertical runs come as
more of a surprise for defenders, avoiding the static midfield
problem Barça has had with Xavi and Iniesta against strong
defenses. Xavi also has started all three matches this season, and
could definitely use a rest. In place of Fàbregas, Martino has the
option of selecting Alexis Sanchez as a center-forward, a
possibility he alluded to when mentioning that he wanted “the
Chilean Alexis” to play for Barça. Sanchez has been in inspired
form for his country, and his link-up play, off the ball movement,
and increased confidence in front of goal are all highlighted when
fielded in a more central role.
