Africans Leap Tight Security Fence Desperate To Enter Europe by tnature: 9:24pm On Oct 22, 2013
Increasing numbers of Africans are taking daring steps to enter Europe: leaping a towering, triple-layer security fence, and racing across before rapid-deployment police guards can catch them. Several security missions and plans to deter the 'would-be migrants' from crossing over to the Spanish territories of Ceuta and Melilla have failed. These cities are situated on the Northern coast of Morocco; it is the only land with a border between Europe and Africa.

The three layer fence is 7 miles long and 23 feet high and winds around the city until it reaches the Mediterranean coast. At night, it lights up along its entire length to assist the police in discovering desperate migrants. In Melilla, Spanish police use their night-time vision goggles and surveillance cameras to watch over the three layers of fencing.

Non Commissioned Officer Javier Martinez said, "Every day for the past few months, we have seen groups approach. There are quite a few of them and they don't all manage to get up to the fence but there are attempts almost every day." On Mount Gurugu, hundreds of African migrants hide, waiting for the right moment to make a dash for the European soil. "They go barefoot to climb the first fence, then they clear the second, then the third."

Despite the strength of the fence and added security, " they manage to climb it," said the Guardia Civil spokesman. "This is a brake. But someone who has crossed the whole of Africa, who has traveled for months to get here, isn't going to be stopped by a fence." I totally agree.

The Guardia Civil has deployed 600 men at Melilla to confront the migrants. "But often a strong, agile young person needs just a few seconds to get over the triple fencing, which looks impenetrable," the spokesman said.

I thought this post was interesting because usually I hear of Hispanics/Mexicans racing across the U.S. borders, desperate for a better life. Here, many Africans from different African countries travel for many days, leaving their families for a better life in Europe.

wow...The last statement is profound. You are right. It's a poverty mentality. The same thing happens in Mexico and come other South American countries. Folks are desperate to migrate to the US.

Ha! Humanitarian assistance on what ground? With the global economic situation, I doubt if any European country will offer such.

It's pitiful that people go through so much hula hoops in a bid to escape poverty and oppression in their home countries. African leaders wake up and smell the coffee!
