Family Members Assault Nurse Over Patient’s Death by Leopantro: 11:30pm On Nov 05, 2013
A staff nurse at the Ekiti State
University Teaching Hospital, Ado
Ekiti, was on Monday beaten to a
pulp by family members of a patient
(name not given) who died in the
hospital on Saturday.
It was gathered that the nurse was
beaten by children and relatives of
the deceased who were at the
hospital when the woman died.
The patient, who was said to have
been diagnosed with a terminal liver
illness, died a few days after she
was admitted at the hospital.
Eyewitnesses said the enraged
relatives held the hands of the
nurse back while she was being
beaten.
An official of the hospital said, “To
us, this was not a reprimand by the
relatives of the patient but a clear
case of an attempt to kill an officer
of the state.
“We are used to verbal attacks and
other forms through which patients’
relatives react to the death of their
loved ones but this was different.
“The intention was to kill the staff
member on duty and that is
worrisome”.
The acting Chief Medical Director of
EKSUTH, Dr. Kolawole Ogundipe,
said, “The patient was suffering
from a terminal liver illness.
She had been kept at a faith-based
home for months before she was
brought to the hospital when they
saw that her condition
deteriorated.”
The Police Public Relations Officer,
Ekiti State Command, Victor
Babayemi, said, “We have received
the report and investigation is being
carried out on the matter.”

Barbaric act. People hate to apportion blame to themselves.

Beating your helpers to stupor or even to death.
Pointing guns to doctor's and nurse's skull and forcing them to work under duress are some of the things that make these jobs extremely hazardous, then how about the infested bodily fluid we come in contact with daily, holding pharmacists hostage to get the controlled dangerous drugs.
I think government should start providing enough security at our hospitals and a very good hazard incentives.

Most of these public hospital nurses are quite mean to patients and rude to visitors. The family of the deceased couldn't have picked a nurse at random to attack, there must have been a reason. Not that I condone such barbaric act. Our nurses have a long way to go in proper bedside manners.

Represented by
Dr Kayode Ajite, the CMD
said the patient was brought
to the Accident and
Emergency Ward (A&E) of the
hospital where she was
stabilised and subsequently
taken to the Female Medical
Ward on admission.According
to Ogundipe, “the patient’s
condition deteriorated which
made the nurse to request
that the relations should get
the necessary injectable that
would keep the patient stable
while they waited for the
prescribed drugs.“The patient
in the process died and the
ignorant relations thought it
was the injection given by
the nurse that caused the
death, therefore transferred
their emotion on her.“Two
daughters of the patient, who
were at the scene, attacked
our staff, held her hands,
choked her and held her
nostril. That was an intention
to kill.”Police are being
partisanThe hospital
management equally indicted
the police for alleged
covering up.He said: “The
police are being partisan in
the matter and we do not
feel comfortable with
that.“Our integrity is at stake
and we want the police to
investigate the matter and
clear our name and we have
called for autopsy to
determine the actual cause of
the patient’s death.

does this answer your question, dominique?

is that all you can say about this case? instead of focusing on the barbaric act, you chose to focus on the nursing profession. so when patient relatives beat up doctors which also happens, are they always because of their bedside manner? am really disappointed in your line of reasoning. a case of terminal liver cirrhosis that was just brought to the hospital. what bedside manner will you give the patient that will keep her alive, considering the hospital is short staffed? this is pure hatred for another profession. am sure if it was a dr that was attacked, you won't make this kind of comment.
