Glad u realize its not only based on trophies won like most folks here believe. Most people here will tell u Mikel deserve to win it because he won AFCON. Like I said in my earlier posts, Asamoah Gyan won it in 2010 without winning any trophy for his team (club or country). Also Adebayor and Okocha won it without winning any trophy.

The BBC award normally goes in favor of a player that performs exceptionally outstanding in AFCON if the award is given in an AFCON year. Note me using the word exceptionally outstanding. But they also consider when a player is equally outstanding in top club football. This Justifies Jay Jay Okocha winning it in 2003 and 2004 (I know Nigeria came out as 3rd).

As for Kotongo, he was the captain of the Zambia national team in AFCON 2012 and he scored 2 vital goals for them, he was outstanding during the 2012 nations cup, he was named player of the tournament. I mean there was no other player that really matched him and Yaya was not that outstanding in club football like he is now. Is Mikel our outstanding player in AFCON 2013? I don't think so, it was a team effort and if I was to pick a player that was really outstanding it was Emenike.

As for Andre Ayew, he scored 13 goals for Marseile in 2010/11 season helping them to 2nd place. He then continued that form in 2011/2012 scoring 16 goals. ( U can't deny that goals win u games and when u score goals u definitely get more points).

As for Gyan, Ghana lost to Egypt in AFCON final but Gyan was the player of the tournament. He scored 3 out of Ghana's 4 goals, he carried Ghana to the final. He continued that in the world cup scoring 3 goals. (Goals really does matter). He was the player of the tournament in 2010 AFCON, so a deserved winner.

This year, Yaya didn't perform well in AFCON, but Mikel was not the player of the tournament either and he scored 0 goals. Based on club performance, Yaya scored 9 goals in 42 appearance for man city from midfield in 2011/12. This season he has already scored 7 in 14 appearance. Ok maybe its not fair to judge them by goals scored. Based on gameplay and importance to the team, Yaya murders Mikel because Yaya is a vital player in Man city (Would play in any top team) while Mikel is a squad player in Chelsea.

Now based on votes, more reason Mikel will not win it. Votes are counted based on country and Nigeria having 2 candidates will do Mikel more harm than good. Lets say in Nigeria 40% votes Mikel, 30% Moses and 20% Yaya and the remaining 10% shared by the rest, then Mikel wins Nigeria which will be counted as 1 point. Now voting in Ghana, lets say Mikel wins 30%, Moses 20%, Yaya 40%, rest 10%. Clearly Yaya wins, if Nigeria had only Mikel then Mikel would probably get 50% instead if 30. That is how the voting is done, so having 2 candidates from Nigeria is really not a good thing.

The defence rest his case!!!!!!!!!

Where did BBC say dat votes are counted BASED ON COUNTRY ??.
BBC never said this.
According to BBC "the player with the highest no. Of votes from fans wins it".
BBC's voting isnt d same as Big brother where it is counted based on country.
BBC even reveals the amount of votes each candidates got when d winner is being revealed.
Past winners had huge numbers like 200,000 votes,100,000 votes.
That shows dat d voting isn't done collectively by countries like d Big brother.
If 1 million nigerians vote for mikel, the 1 million votes will be counted and added to d rest of d votes 4rm other countries.
E.g if 1 million nigerians vote for mikel,
100,000 ghanaians vote for mikel
200,000 4rm d rest of africa vote for mikel.
Mikel's votes would be 1 million plus 100,000 plus 200,000
Total =1.3 million votes.
Thats how its done. And not d BBA method.

And who told u Man-city european fans REALLY vote ?
If so yaya would have won it last year.
Becos yaya is very popular and loved in europe and england.
But Katongo isnt really known outside africa, yet he won it over yaya.Abi ManCity and european fans were sleeping last year ??
Straight from the BBC voting page here is what was written:-

Voting isnt opened to europeans or people outside Africa.
ManCity fans are few in africa COMPARED to chelsea fans.

This year, Yaya didn't perform well in AFCON, but Mikel was not the player of the tournament either and he scored 0 goals. .
I didnt say AFCON alone,i said NATIONAL TEAM performance THROUGHOUT the year.Remember confederations cup also favours mikel.
Emenike wasnt nominated. If he was, then we can argue about that.
And why are u judging by goals ??.
Mikel isnt a striker u wont expect
him to score goals at afcon like Gyan or Katongo.
Mikel didnt score at AFCON but he assisted 4 goals(Four assists).
Assists are as important as goals.
He performed outstandily well not only at AFCON but throughout d year for nigeria including the confederations cup.
If dey are to list the top ten best performers for national team not at afcon alone, but THROUGHOUT this year(From january to now) in Africa,i doubt Yaya toure would make the top 10,but definately Mikel would make the top 3,he might even be the number 1.
And Gyan NEVER was d best player at d 2010 afcon. He has never won the most valuable player award.
Egypts Ahmed Hassan was voted d player of the tournament at d 2010 Afcon.
And like i've said numerous times, those that won it in d past won it becos they had d highest no. Of votes NOT neccessarily that dey were d best performers that year.
And that will be d same dis yr.
All 5 have equal chances of winning it no matter how one player performed better than d other.
Becos at d end of d day,the player with d highest no. Of votes wins it and NOT neccessarily d best performer 4 either club or country or at AFCON.

Ok bro, I support Mikel really and he has improved his game especially when playing for the national team. Now he plays with all his heart, things he didn't do in the past. I respect him for that. But if I'm a manager of a team and I have to choose one between Mikel and Yaya, I will choose Yaya without blinking.
I understand and respect your opinion.
Re: Mikel And Victor Moses Nominated For BBC African Footballer Of The Year Award by naijanoni(m): 8:12pm On Nov 12, 2013
If BBC thinks Emenike did better than Mikel, then Emenike would have been nominated. But he wasnt.
IMO we won d afcon due to teamwork.
But there must definately be outstanding players no matter what.
Emenike,Mikel and Moses were nigeria's outstanding players IMO.
Its hard to say who was best among d three.
Emenike wasnt nominated, but mikel and moses were.
So i go for Mikel.

Who the hell told you that, anyone from the 4 corners of the world could vote on line, last year Man City didnt advertised it on there website this year they did, Man City fans will vote in the thousands.

Saying Katongo is not known outside Africa is the most naive statement ever heard on NL, Tell me are you saying the African Nations Cup is not watched outside Africa? Eurosport screen the AFCON to every corner of the globe, Europeans love an under-dog

I believe it says You can either vote via this page or by sending an SMS from your phone to +44 7786 20 20 08: I didnt say you have to be standing in the continent of Africa.

The BBC African Footballer of the Year is an annual award given to the best African footballer of the year as voted by the BBC radio listeners. Voting is done via SMS and online

Lol just begining to read some of d wrongies u posted.
I think u lot are been awed and blinded by yaya's terrific performance dis new season which is ONLY 3 months old.The goals,d free-kicks and all.
Last season(2012/2013) was yaya's worst ever season in man-city.Not talkin bout trophy-wise but PERFORMANCE-WISE.
Take away dis new season that is ONLY 3MONTHS OLD.And judge his performance in d 2nd half of last season.Judge his performance 4rm January to mid-august,u'll get what i'm talking about.
2011/2012 was yaya's best ever season PERFORMANCE-WISE at City.
He was on hot FIRE then.
Compare his performance of last yr from January to december with that of dis year 4rm January to present(and not only dis new season dat is only 3months old).
His last year's performance was 10 times better than this year(Jan to present).
And u tell me Katongo who did well only in Jan/Feb last yr didnt have anybody dat matched him ??.
Lol.
U forget dat drogba who was on FIRE and was d reason To chelsea's champions league triumph was also nominated ??.And still Katonngo won.
I guess u didnt watch football last year.Drogba and Yaya had their best years last year.
Anybody that believes that Katongo deserved to win it ahead of drogba and Yaya toure last year should also agree that mikel deserves to win it dis year ahead of yaya.
Why ?
Becos Mikel's performance THROUGHOUT dis year was a lot better than Katongo's performance THROUGHOUT last year.
And yaya toure's performance THROUGHOUT last year was a lot better than his(yaya toure) performance THROUGHOUT this year.
If u dont agree then u aint judging rightly and U Just dont like Mikel.
FACT !!

You are talking as if its only chelsea fans that will vote. No doubt majority of chelsea fans and Nigerians will vote for Mikel, but what about other fans? They will vote based on who actually merits the award. Just the same way Swedish and PSG fans voted Ibrahimovic for Ballon D'or last year, Portuguese and Real Madrid for Ronaldo, Dutch and Man Utd for Robin Van Persie, But the rest of the world knew who deserves the award and they voted Messi.

And what is Yaya ?-A Box-to-Box Midfielder not a DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER !!!.

And what is Mikel ??- A STRICTLY DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER with positional discipline!!!.

Their play shouldnt even be compared.

Its just like comparing makelele with Yaya toure or comparing an attacking midfielder with a central forward.
Mikel carries out the role he is given to play effectively.
Yaya carries out the role he is given to play effectively.

The way they play shouldnt even be compared.

I disagree with @bolded, Mikel was an attacking Midfielder, and still even play in that position in some Nigerian matches. Mou tried to convert him into "the new Makelele" but clearly failed. He never turned out to he Makelele neither did he fulfil the attacking potentials we all know he had

Stop arguing like someone who doesn't watch football, Mikel is an average player, someone who has confidence in his ability to get forward, will get forward, with or without instruction(just make sure you don't give the ball away). Alonso,Matinez,Luiz, Kedira, toure, are all defensive player but we all see them bumping forward with the ball.

Thank u very much bro. No doubt Mikel is a good player but he is not in the same level as Yaya. And people should stop using the excuse of him being a defensive midfielder to cover his inability to shoot. Essien was playing defensive midfielder when he was in his prime and he scored some cracking goals. Roy Keane, Patrick Viera, Makelele, Jarvi Martinez, Sergio Busquets.. are all deep lying defensive/holding midfielders but they stamp their authority on games and are not afraid to go forward and not forgetting their defensive roles. This is why Mikel is a squad player while Yaya is a vital player.

@Write2obi Alright.Your opinion.
Everybody has different opinions about mikel. And everybody is entitled to theirs.
Mikel is a player that divides opinion among fans equally.
Thats not a new thing.
But Note:-Makelele only scored 2 goals 4 chelsea.
And I havent seen any modern DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER that plays as makelele did tactically.
Mikel aside compared to modern defensive midfielders(J.Martinez,Lucas,Busquet,e.t.c) Makelele wasnt known for bombing forward frequently.
No arguments Again !!

Accepted Makelele didn't score many goals in his Real Madrid and Chelsea Career, but no denying he was a very vital player. One of the best DM in his time. And yes there are not too many players like Makelele, Viera and Roy keane in modern football. Mikel tends to lean towards that category but is he really doing enough to be ranked among them?

Not yet but he still 26 and 4rm his performance recently(club and country),he is definately improving and can only get better.Even though he isnt a regular starter, his game for chelsea dis season has definately improved under mourinho. He now works harder and joins d attack more compared to before. And he makes brilliant passes forward. You cant say
Mikel has been a squad player in all 7 year's of his career. He was an undisputed starter under some managers. No club changes managers like chelsea.Different managers have their different philosophies and dats also d reason why a worldclass player like mata is a squad player under jose.
I can bet dat its just a matter of time,he(mikel) will retain his spot as a regular starter in d chelsea midfield becos lampard is obviously fucking up.Still has lots of great years ahead.Could turn out to be a better makelele.

Football has gone digital mahn!
*Goal keeper are now expected to be excellent in handling, shoot stopping, reflexes and even ball distribution
*Centre halves are now required not just to stop strikers, but also to play from the back, composed on the ball, bring the ball out of defence, with excellent pass accuracy
*Full backs these days, if you like stop Messi and Ronaldo combined together, if you can't attack and cross then your as good as a squad player
*winger are now required not just to cross but to also score goals and also track back and assist the fullbacks
*goals are now excepted from midfielder
*strikers are no longer judged solely by their goal return, but also their workrate, link up play, and ability to hold up play and bring others into play
*******
Makelele style is outdated.
Noni lemmie ask you one question?
Name 20 world class Central Midfielder, and tell me who still play the Makelele style among them

N*B Gomes is a better goal scorer than Manzdukic, but the former lost his place to the later, cos of Manzdukic's workrate and linkup play

Chicharito is a better scorer than Welbeck, but Welbeck is getting more game time than Chicharito, cos of his workrate, linkup play and being able to play from the flank

Its not just my opinion, Mikel is really an average player

y'all are still talking inconsequential BS. Was Yaya not on the list when Katongo won it last year? Is Mikel not a better player than Katongo? Truth is, I doubt the votes of Europeans count for much cuz unlike some are saying, I wouldn't feel inclined to vote if a player from my club/country isn't on that list. How did Katongo win if Europeans voted largely cuz he's not that famous. I repeat, Yaya will just smell this award as usual, but he'll be clapping for Mikel when he goes on stage to get his award.
