School Railing Collapses In Lagos, Injuring 8 Students by Fynestboi: 8:03am On Nov 14, 2013
Lagos — Eight students of Ajangbadi High School in Iba Local Council Development Area, LCDA, Lagos went into coma after the railing of the two-storey building in the school collapsed.

The incident which caused pandemonium in the school premises occurred at about 10:00 a.m. as the students were leaning on the rail on the second floor of the building.

Vanguard gathered that the rail had shown signs of rust but was not replaced.
Miss Rofiat Ademola, a Senior Secondary School, SSS1 student, said the rail finally gave way on Monday and injured eight of the SSS 3, students.

According to Ademola: “We were in the classroom at about 10:00 a.m. Suddenly, we heard a loud noise.

“We rushed out to see what was happening and saw that some SSS3 students had fallen from the second floor of the building.”

Another student, Mr. Samuel Olasunkanmi, said the rail started showing signs of rust since last school term.

“Despite the bad state of the rail, the students still used to lean on it before it collapsed on Monday.”

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of the council, Mrs. Ramota Oseni-Adeyeri who spoke to Vanguard, said only eight students were affected when the rail gave way.
Oseni-Adeyeri said: “The students were rushed to the Iba LCDA Primary Health Centre, PHC, where the medical officers gave them appropriate treatment.

“Of the eight students, only one is still in critical condition at the moment and she was transferred to the Igando General Hospital, Igando, for treatment.”

Nigeria lacks maintenance culture, and that's a big problem for us.

People build schools buildings everyday just with only one motive... Making money, they don't even care about the safety of the people involved. I'm sure the owner of the school must have seen or heard of the rusts yet nothing was done. Experienced something like this when i was in primary school. A section of our school wall cracked and broke off, it was falling to the other side, we saw it and tried to hold it but we could not, luckily the person who was walking on the other side of the wall was big enough to wedge the wall from falling on him. . . But i remember that nothing was done on that wall for days. People tend to show lest interest in things that does not bring quick money. . . I think the ministry of Education should always go around to check on how safe school buildings are and close those not capable of safely holding human beings.

Here we go again,Nigerians and their carefee attitude..This is an incident which could have been easily averted if the school authorities had made the required reparation to the damaged railing..And to think the rust had been discovered since the previous term..It baffles me how they even had a sense of safety to teach under an enviroment as dangerous as that.

Sub-standard schools with bad infrastructures and poor maintenance culture like this shouldn't be allowed to operate in the country.

The moment Nigerians realise that a stitch in time saves nine the better for us, for crying out loud, an environment meant for students should be one free of risk, throwing caution into the wind and asking the students not to loiter around the building is more like talking to the birds n the air......Besides, the adage that says that the tree that is collapsing and still a child cant see it while standing, and adult sees it even when sitting, it is apparant the school authorities just turned a blind eye to that direction just because they dont want to spend money and therefore endangered the young ones lives.......May God help us

This is coming from a supposed national news site and there are no pics? I am forced to deduce that this so called reporters just hear the news, type and paste it for us without actually seeing it for themselves.
The carelessness of some of these private schools should be taken seriously.

how do I describe this?
* when the school authorities found out that the railings were giving way, why did they not do anything about it if we placed the kind of value we place on money on our lives I am so sure this country would be better for it?
* and when would we teenagers learn to use our growing and maturing brains properly why would someone see a railing giving way and still choose to rest on it for crying out loud?

I hope the school get to pay for the trreatment expenses? Its pathetic that such things should be left to deteriorate and possible kill someone before they think of repairs

Deekaydadon: Nigeria lack maintenance culture, and that's a big problem for us.

Add cutting corners and disregard for quality to that too.
