Learning German by Nobody: 12:35pm On Dec 10, 2013
Good Day everyone, I promised to start-up a Deutsch course here but have been unable to come up with something. Am sorry for keeping those I promised waiting. For those who are not in Lagos and are self-studying, well you are all welcome on board, ask your questions and I promise to help.
First I want to say this, learning German is simple if you make it so. I will try my best to make things simple and easy for everyone.
And I know we have proficient Deutsch speakers on this forum so I also use this medium to call everyone here, to chip in one or two things to make this thread a worthwhile.

Hope to hear good news from everyone….alles gute

First we begin with greetings.

Guten Morgen! Goodmorning
from 6Uhr- 11Uhr

Guten Tag! Goodafternoon from 11Uhr- 18Uhr

Guten Abend! Goodevening from 18Uhr-…………………

Then Introduction.
When introducing yourself in German you say.

Ich heiße Beebee5000 oder

Mein name ist Beebee5000

Ich bin Beebee5000

Then to ask about someones name you say
Wie hießen Sie (formal)

Wie heißt du( informal)

Let’s begin, I will treat some little grammar then we apply them. But most importantly at this stage we will work on vocabularies.

1) Verbs and personal pronouns.

Ich I

Du You (informal, singular)

Sie You (formal, singular)

Er,sie es He, She, It

Wir we

Ihr You (informal, plural)

Sie You (formal, plural)

Sie They

NOTE: (you can distinguish between “sie” meaning she and sie meaning they by the verb ending) we’ll get to that just don’t forget.)

please i need feedback to continue

@bee d diff btw Ihr You (informal, plural) nd Sie You (formal, plural)...d tin dey confuse me well well.....can u enlighten me more on it...

Chars1289: @bee d diff btw Ihr You (informal, plural) nd Sie You (formal, plural)...d tin dey confuse me well well.....can u enlighten me more on it...

Let's clear the confusion: Make sure you understand the meaning of PLURAL You. If I say "You asked the above question" You in the sentence refers to only you (Chars) and it is know as Singular you.
"You are good students of learn German", you here refers to more than one person, hence, Plural.

When addressing a friend, colleague, young ones, family member in an unofficial platform, then use INFORMAL you ( Du, Ihr). For official setting or mark of respect use FORMAL you (Sie, Sie). When in doubt use Sie.

Just like Ose and Ese in yoruba lang. the diff is respect.

Note that the S in Sie is always capitalized irrespective of its position in a sentence.
Re: Learning German by princeolu254: 8:32pm On Dec 10, 2013
German Mistake: Wie is often used used instead of als

For example:
Er ist grӧβer wie sein Vater. (He is taller than his father.)
Dieses Auto ist teurer wie mein letztes. (This car is more expensive than my last one.)

The correct way would be:
Er ist grӧβer als sein Vater.
Dieses Auto ist teurer als mein letztes.
Though both wie and alS are used when comparing two items or people, it must be remembered that:

1)Wie is used solely when both things compared are equal
2) Als is used only when the items compared are unequal.

Wie is an adverb and als is a conjunction.
Re: Learning German by princeolu254: 9:05pm On Dec 10, 2013
The following is an overview of essential German greetings (Grüße) you need to know when encountering a German speaker. Though the casual way of addressing someone in German is included, these sayings should be reserved only for close friends and family. As a general rule, always use the more formal way of speaking when in Germany, namely with Sie (formal you) instead of du (familiar you).

Hello. Hallo.
Grüß dich! casual
Grüß Gott! In southern Germany and Austria.
Guten Tag. Hello/Good Day.
Guten Morgen/Guten Abend. Good morning/evening.

Bye! Auf Wiedersehen.
Auf Wiederhören. Bye on the telephone.
Tschüss! casual
Bis bald! See you soon!
Bis später! See you later!

How are you? Wie geht es Ihnen? formal
Wie geht es dir? casual

I'm fine. Es geht mir gut.
I'm so-so. Es geht.
I'm not doing well. Es geht mir schlecht.
I'm doing better. Es geht mir besser.

Excuse me! Entschuldigen Sie bitte! formal
Entschuldigung! casual

Pardon me? Wie bitte?

Please. Bitte.

Thank you. Danke.

I'm sorry. Es tut mit leid.

Really? Wirklich?

Gladly! Gerne!

Nice to meet you. Sehr erfreut.

Take care Mach's gut.

I would like this thread to interactive, guys come up with questions, and grey areas you don't understand.
Meanwhile here is how they read the Alphabets in German.

English German
Aa.......... ah
Bb.......... beh
Cc......... tseh
Dd_____________ deh
Ee_____________ eh
Ff_____________ eff
Gg_____________ geh
Hh_____________ ha
Ii______________ i
Jj______________ yot
Kk_____________ kah
Ll______________ ell
Mm____________ emm
Nn_____________ enn
Oo_____________ oh
Pp_____________peh
Qq_____________ku
Rr______________err
Ss_____________ ess
Tt_____________ teh
Uu_____________ oo
Vv_____________ fow
Ww_____________ veh
Xx______________ ix
Yy______________ oop-seh-lon
Zz______________ tsett

Then we have the special alphabets

Ää ae
Öö oe
Üü ue
ß ss

There are 26 Latin characters in German alphabet plus 4 special letters
These special letters are ä, ö, ü and ß (these funny dots are called Umlauts)
You will never find a word that starts with the letter ß
Some of the letters are pronounced in the way that not a single English letter is pronounced
German "R" is famous for its pronunciation. This is how you tell Germans from the rest of people. They pronounce "R" from the back of their throats.

Are there any hard and fast rules for remembering which nouns go with the definite articles 'Der, Das and die'. I know nouns are assigned genders but it's hard trying to remember the ones that are male and female genders.
