Manchester
United players
face the
possibility of a
pay cut in the
region of 25%, if
they fail to
make it into
next year’s
Champions
League, according to a report in The Sun.
The policy, which has received
the backing of former manager,
Sir Alex Ferguson and chief
executive David Gill, was
implemented three years and
ago. However, it does not apply
to all senior players, but new
signings and players renewing
contracts have had to accept it.
And the newspaper quotes a
source as saying: “United aren’t
the only Premier League club
with this policy. They felt it was
fair players should be rewarded
for reaching the top four but
also share the financial pain if
they miss out.”
If true, the report, throws
Wayner Rooney’s future at Old
Trafford into doubt. The striker
has 18 months left and talks are
due to start soon over a new
deal.
United are currently 7th in the
League, 11 points off the table
toppers, Arsenal.
