It depends o your pocket and what kind of things you are buying, ie for business? or self? for pure indulgence nothing beats Oxford street which is the retail capital of the world. There you can visit Selfrgdges,Debenhams, John Lewis etc ansd they al have extensive ranges in clothes and especially makeup. But there are the prices to match as well. Liverpool street Market and Shoreditch are places you can get high street fashion at cheaper perices but beware and check quality. shoreditch have nice italian shoes but be prepared to walk and haggle. Brent Cross is really good cos all the shops are under on roof and you wont bneed tp walk as much as if you were on Oxford Steet. There are shope everywhere really, on every high street-NEXt, , Mexx,Principles,(all these are good for work clothes and skirt suits)Coast( for really nice EXPENSIVE fora\mlwear). Russell And Bromley for shoes, again rather dear but lovely. Primark (oxford Street Branch) is ideal for cheap everyday dudes, jean skirts, cotton dresses that kind of thing. the quality is not for outings though but you get a lot for you buck.
Harrods in Knightsbridge is great for really luxurious shopping, money. but its a good place to visit and check whats in vogue. Marks and Spencers is great for underwear and workwear. they have some nice tops and shoes|(for play).
all i will say is as long as you have a LOT of money to spend you will have a ball. If not look round fisrt to check out the bargains. Good luck

thanks Ajilete, for breaking it down for me.

i intend to fully utilise this opportunity to shop for all those things that are difficult to get in Nigeria at affordable prices, like good underwear, make-up, etc.

hmm, oxford street, this is actually my first visit to London and i need to shop for work things especially as i am about starting a new job. Any ideas if one can catch sales say about 15september?

a lot of the summer sales would be over by then but there still bargains to be had. Liverpool street market as i said and the best places to get makeup is still oxford street cos you xcan trry them out, there is a lot of choice and there are al lot of free bies as well. if you want things like Clinique, Mac, Iman, etc John Lewis, Selfridges, all the big department stores along Oxford street will oblige you and you dont have to buy, just say you are trying out and ask for samples, always ask cos they are meant to give these out but a lot of people are too shy to ask. Good luck

Jill,

In addition to what the others have said, you can visit Bluewater and Lakeside although these are not in London, they are not far from London. You will find all the shops in London at these 2 locations Debenhams in Lakeside, John Lewis in Bluwater and I think also House of Fraser. Then they have a massive clearance Next store in Lakeside and also a massive Primark store if you want cheap stuffs.
Good luck shopping!

JUst go to Lakeside in Essex and spend the whole day, you would get all you need all.
All the shops are there.
I dont personally like Oxford street, especially during sales

[size=13pt]~Depending what area you'll be located or how far you'll willing to travel, you can also visit  the local street markets in several boroughs!!

~They stock varied clothes lines & sell the same items you'll find  in stores most of the time. . .you're bound to get a bargain there too!! : Most people who sell clothes, accessories etc back home, buy the bulk of their goods from these people!! The big plus is you're bound to get a variety of summer clothes still available compared to the availability instores seeing as Autumn is almost upon us!!

~Here's a link of the areas you'll find markets  if you'll like more  info on the days they are available!!
