@Ezecar, expensive is relative my brother. What is important is to compare apples with apples and oranges with oranges.

The other cars you are comparing with nairaland cars -  have you tried to obtain their VIN numbers and run a check on them?  I assure you, most of those cars, you will find out, are salvaged, flooded and/or "disused" vehicles in the US. These are what make them cheap - no one will buy them in the US as the government will not allow them on the road in their condition.

Most dealers on nairaland are honest and transparent particularly with VIN number. I will rather settle for them than buy a cheap car without knowing its history.

@Ivvie, I beg to differ with respect to dealers on nairaland. I will want to believe that majority of dealers here are transparent and honest. It's just a few bad eggs that have been giving us problems. However, let me quickly add that they are now beginning to tow the line of honesty and transparency.

Also, on the issue of VIN numbers - it is not the VIN per se that we are interested in but the CARFAX report. The VIN is just the information you need in order to obtain this report. We all know that this is not a substitute for due diligence but at least from the get go, you may be able to find out from CARFAX if it is even worth your while inspecting the vehicle. In addition to this, odometer rollback issue can and has been detected just by looking at the CARFAX report so, if you lift VIN number from anywhere and post it here, CARFAX can  and will expose it - It happened recently on nairaland where a poster mistakenly posted a wrong VIN number.

I will recommend having access to CARFAX report before even taking a look at any vehicle - In order to do this as mentioned earlier, YOU NEED THE VIN NUMBER. I am sure a lot of nairalanders are beginning to see the advantage of CARFAX particularly in view of the happenings of the last week.

I say this with humility and not out of disrespect but diminishing the importance of VIN number at this point, in my opinion will be a bit naive.

VIN only helps about a tenth of the inspection. Many times, a car can have a clean VIN and yet accidented
. VINS are also sold on the internet. You should learn how to inspect a car and spot a car that has been painted. Cars today don't come painted and there are many cues that that will tell the vehicle is OEM assembled. Nairalanders, even being exposed to all this fraud still ask for VINS People ought to be smarter. You ask for a screenshot of the VIN and not some scripted VIN. It's easy lifting VIN numbers off a parking lot. If you have a sophisticated diagnostic tool, you can use that to verify the VIN to that of the dashboard. Above all, you cannot forge a police VIN which is everywhere in a vehicle. I personally will recommend that no one buys cars off the internet but a car dealer. There are plenty ways to fool nairalanders; there is still no justification to inflate the price on nairaland as oppose to onsite dealings.

Looking at the Rabbit, it is clear it hasn't been in a frontal impact collision due to certain nodes and tattoos presents. But the notion can be defeated if the entire bay was swapped and fused. to the cabin frame. Also, it doesn't tell me if there was a side or rear impact collision. The on;y reason I won't buy it and discourage others from buying it is because it has green coolant in it. Restoring and selling accidented cars is a huge profit of a business.

Point of Correction: Most dealers on Nairaland are not transparent. It isn't easy buying a used car and even worse if you are the paranoid type (which should be the prudent approach).

@Zion

True to all you said but there is still some slack. A way around selling accidented vehicles through the nose of unsuspecting buyers would be to lift a VIN number of a car in a lot or parked on the road. In an ad, you'D be seeing an accidented car but the VIN placed is a clean VIN. To curb this, a picture of the VIN is taken along the rest of the car. An open engine bay shouldn't be omitted as well because tattoos spell a lot as well. You cannot duplicate tattoos when you order a replacement panel. As you spoke about due diligence, it isn't a flawless method but wiser than buying in good faith. Try understanding what I am saying. The buyer should be able to see the VIN for himself and do a report for himself as well not just posting a VIN.

Look at the attached. It won't be as cropped at it shows but with the advertised car attached to it. It's not good enough to post VIN but to "screenshot" it as well. Upon paying for the vehicle, you verify the VIN during inspection. I don't know if you get my point. At least, that is how it is done.
Re: NA WAH O FOR NAIRALAND by ziontrain: 5:10pm On Oct 01, 2008
@Ivvie, thanks for your contribution. I do understand your point perfectly.

Let me just ask you one question. If you are a dealer that is honest (let's just assume you are a dealer at this point even though you may not be one), and you want to advertise your vehicle on this forum and you know that with VIN number, CARFAX report will show the history of your vehicle and you have nothing to hide, will you or will you not post the VIN number of the vehicle to re-assure buyers in view of what has been happening on this forum recently. Just answer YES or NO and that will be fine.

I submit to you that any dealer that is uncomfortable with posting VIN number of his vehicle after all these recent aggravation on the forum most likely has something to hide.

@Zion

YES, I would post the VIN.
I'D post the VIN on the board, door panel, engine bay stamps as well as highlight the tattoos that came with the car. The undercarriage will be posted and also make it clear that there aren't any oil leaks or rusts. Anything that isn't OEM will be highlighted.
If I was to sell any of my cars, There is nothing to hide if there is no deceit. I am very much in support of VINs but it isn't "word" enough to just type in VINs.

Now any honest dealer must post all these highlighted above attached with the advert, if you dont attach them, then you're not honest.

Simple

Re: NA WAH O FOR NAIRALAND by atilla(m): 11:55am On Oct 03, 2008
Nairaland is not that bad. There are some cars here that are not to expensive

i remember one Avensis that was sold for about N1.7mill last month plus check the toyota camry that was sold by jenju for N2.7.
Just look and you will find good deals plus you can always negotiate.
Re: NA WAH O FOR NAIRALAND by sultaan(m): 12:17pm On Oct 03, 2008
Sometimes, if a dealer is planning to sell cars to Nigerians, and he knows most of them have no use for the VIN(no way to check carfax) he may just decide to post pics and ask them to come take a look.
Most used cars are bought from roadside dealers.
If you know nothing about used cars;
1, you look startup and pay.
2, If you know a little you 1+ get a mechanic to inspect it.
3, If you are good with used cars you 1+2 take a test driver going through the gears,brakes, fluid color, listen for unusual sound and leaks.

A car might be salvaged, but if the repair/rebuild was good, a buyer should have no problem.

When a buyer picks a car online and prepays, he should not complain of what he/she gets, but if a Naija dealer gets a down payment and brings in a salvage without prior knowledge of buyer, now that is a problem.

It is the resposibility of a buyer to know what he/she is buying and the seller to give all the information available, otherwise state he does not know. You will notice on ebay dealers say the car starts and engine runs or not only so buyer should know what to expect or decide to go ahead with purchase.
