I do not see any reason y you should return the number plate because it has been registered to the car. Such number plate can't be used for another car.

I do have the new number plate... when you track it through frsc website, it comes out with the make of the car and owners name. Meaning you can't use such number plate 4 another car

The old number plate is tied to the car but the new number plate is tied to the owner and not the car, you can effect change of ownership on the old plate but you cant transfer ownership of the new plate.

No, once you obtain the new plate it can used for all subsequent registered or new car you buy, except you are getting a second car to the one you drives presently.
All you have to do is to take your number plates along with docs of the registered , copies of sale agreement and letter of authorisation to effect change of owner and sworn affidevit to the licensing office. The will transfer details of the said car to your number plates and issue you with new set of docs.

This is a new law set n practiced by the lagos state govt other state still use the regular system they say is suppose to help with the new car registration trariff so u dont have to spend more money on registration when you get a new car ....but it sucks, why would one want to use an old number on a new car it takes the fun away.
