Do You Love Or Hate Nigerian Movies? by Seun(m): 10:11pm On Aug 05, 2006
I hate Nollywood movies, but I really don't know why. Are they too real for comfort? Do they portray too many values that I disagree with? I don't know. The Nigerian movie stories just get to me such that I can't enjoy them.

On the other hand, I know a lot of people who really love Nigerian movies. Are you one of them?

Re: Do You Love Or Hate Nigerian Movies? by aykay(m): 10:52pm On Aug 05, 2006
hate them. why do something and not do it well? just seems pointless and a waste of money. too many movies r released each month. y dont they gather all that money and do one that wud be worth watching instead of constantly regurgitating all that crap.

The problem I have Nollywood movies is its mostly advertisement for Made In Nigeria Churches and Pastors, all problems in Nigerian movies can only be solved by a Babalawo or Tongue Speaking Pastor.
The story are always the same,Rich vs Poor love stories, its never about a nurse being in love with a school teacher, the most annoying aspect is all the leading female characters don't have a job, they always at home, the best thing they do is open a shop.If you didn't know better you'll think that most Nigerian women get a career only when they marry, all they think about in getting married asap and their families are always dirt poor,

@topic i think that they are funny the actors over act and some just plain and simple can't act.
some movies i do not identify with because what Nigerians see as taboo is normal to me. cheesy
Re: Do You Love Or Hate Nigerian Movies? by Christino(m): 3:01pm On Aug 06, 2006
The problem is originality. They steal scripts and scenes from American movies. They even try to steal from BOllywood - can you imagine. We have Nigerian Most wanted, we almost even had "Titanic".

If any Nollywood film mistakenly makes sense, check it, there's an American Version of it on MNET, Movie Magic or MGM.

And if there's any hit like Igodo, the next thing you'll see is Igbudu and co.
If there's any hit like Osofia in london, the next thing will be Love from Asia, Sososo in America.

Absolute Rubbish.

A rich Igbo man once called Zeb Ejiro and said, "Zeb, I want a film in 6 days time. I want Omotola Jalade, Richard Mofe Damijo, Genevieve and Aki and Popo, I'll pay you 5 million, just deliver the master copy and i'll do the rest."
-No script, no cast per character, no locations yet, no soundtrack (this one is one wack area for most of them), nothing in place, knowing fully well that some people are out to buy anything that comes out of Nollywood. Poor us.

@Topic

I absolutely hate Nigeria movies, soaps, shows ETC. I have never watch one single Nigerian Movie from start to finish. I think it is garbage and the actors are just plain. I do not know what people see in Nigerian Movies. By the way i also hate Indian Movies As well. Give me some Shawshank Redemption or Miami Vice and i am good to go. Hollywood Fan all the way!

nigerian movies they r just really annoying sometimes some of the story lines are wack, the movies r too damn long with lots of parts and some of the actors can't even act to save their life but other than that let me just say naija movies are manageable

Like what shawna said they are soo long and have multiple parts. I just watched one Nigerian movie yesterday where part I was 1 1/2 hours and then part II was 2 hours and now they're talking about part III because the story line still hasn't been resolved. Something that could easily have been made into a good 2 hour movie has been drawn out soo much with random plot lines coming in detract from the story itself. I feel like they just make movies unnecessarily complicated, like movies are more like American soap operas in how improbable and weird they are and in how drawn out that they are.

It's funny this topic comes up because I actually saw a news thing earlier on NTA about this. Nollywood constantly pumps out movies, and yet they aren't even well done (as in filming job) and the acting isn't always all that great.

But I have seen some good movies before (as in good plot lines).

Goodness, where do I start? From the over-acting to just outright horrible acting to the continues shouting, to overexpression by the actors and actresses, and overdramatization of everything, to withcraft, juju and silly love stories. To terrible attempt to become Westernized, and the list goes on. I can't stand watching a Naija movie. I have tried many times but it is just unbearable.  Nollywood should start focusing on issues that are affecting Nigeria. Why not make a movie about Nigerians of different ethnic groups banding together to fight corruption? Or just something that leaves you thinking? Why not make movies that tackle some of the problems Nigerians are facing? Or address parts of our culture that are detrimental to our improvement? Things like that will surely encourage the younger generations to look at our problems and work at solving it.

Personally I  think Nigerian moves are not too bad, I appreciate it because it brings me closer to home. The actor are one of the best in the world, for people that do little or no rehearsal. quality wise: naija movies of cause is not of world standard but there are improvements. Moreover it is always good for a laugh. If you are not laughing because of it humor you will be  laughing because it is bad. ether way it brings you to laugh.

Superman,

To me the only Nigerian movie that has hit home was Super Story with Suaray,Abike and my favourite Toyin Tomato,it dealt with real issues like unemployment, sexual harassment, poverty etc and not fetish.
I give a lot of kudos to Nollywood directors and actors but you have to agree that there is overacting, too much shouting and crying, phony accents, silly story lines.I remember watching a Nollywood movie set in the 1970s but they were talking about their Mercedes Benz S Class and in the sitting room you can see a DVD
machine.
I don't think that some of the story lines are well thought out.

Re: Do You Love Or Hate Nigerian Movies? by lunafish(f): 9:48pm On Aug 06, 2006
We should supprt our own. When the white man makes something we love it; whenever we make something we find fault. How about appreciating the self-sufficiency of the industry? We always knock each other as black people; we need to show more love and supprt so that we can prosper. For the early years; Nollywood is amazing. Go and research early Hollywood films and watch how they lynched our people and glorified racism and brutality. Nollywood is in its early days and still manages to have a dignity that Hollywood stils struggles to have. yes Nollywood doesn't have the full technical quality of things we've seen. Maybe that's because people make do with $10000 to make a film instead of the tens of millions Hollywood has. Level the playing field and let's see which industry trumps the other.

I support my own; even with it's imperfections.

i dislike em cos dey shy away from reality and u know what comes outta projects wit little or no vested proper preparation?-failure of course. so in my own context, nigerian movies are miles away from reality. best of results can be achieved if proper and adequate preparation IS invested in dem
Re: Do You Love Or Hate Nigerian Movies? by babaibadan(m): 10:27pm On Aug 06, 2006
Just a suggestion O! no shout on me O! You guys should try out Adebayo Faleti, Mainframe films productions (opomulero) and some of Tade Ogidan films your mentality towards nigerian movies will change. Maybe u have been watching the wrong movies. Mind you not all movies shot in the US or UK or wherever are always interesting.

Nigerian movies have their shortcomings though;at a particular time they are shooting love films(bitter love, sweet love, controversial love,e-loveLOL) the next its bakassi boys and OPC before u know whats happening only Aki and POPO or watever are the only ones acting. There was also a time that naija movies was all about witches wizards and rituals.
