programmers arent smart at all. Take a look at linus trovards, who created one of the most powerful OS in the world and give it out for FREE! Surely, he isnt smart. Take a look at Java, netbeans, Eclipse, Aptana studio, python, C++, and even the worlds most popular mobile OS, Android, the programmers that created these wonderful technologies arent smart at all, else they would have been raking millions of dollars. Programming isnt about smartness. It is about service. Serving people is what differentiates programmers from programmers. Great programmers use their skills to contribute to the opensource community. To answer your question, a smart programmer is a programmer who cannot separate passion from business in programming; if you really love your coding skill,and you really want to serve the world with your skill, and you also really want to make big money from your service, then you are a smart programmer............and probably, the smartest in the world. The reason why those languages are free... Is because of continuity and involving others to improve the language.

People know how smart you are when you use your skills to solve real world problems and make profit from it. You can spend decades learning C++ and still be a dullard if you cant solve a problem with it, and make profit from it. Who created the php language? Lot of people dont know. Who created Facebook? There're different forms of smartness. Programmers are undoubtedly smart but not the smartest people on earth. In fact, no profession or group of people can be called the smartest set of people on earth; smart people are scattered all over the place, displaying different forms and levels of smartness.

Did you read my first comment here? We arent talking abt great programmers, but abt smart programmers. Great programmers are the champions in the opensource community, without them there wont be the smart programmers. Having said that, the smart programmers use tools created by the great programmers for business, i.e, solve a real life problem and make money from it. The world needs both the great programmers and the smart programmers; the world praise the great programmers and pays the smart programmers. And the irony of it all is that, the smart programmers often becomes the employers of the great programmers. An example is the inventor of python; he is now employed and works with Google, a core user of python. So dont be surprised when you hear that Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook has employed lerdorf, the creator of php.

They hav highly developed logical faculties thru continuous exertion by nature of their work. I'm talkg of programmer who arent stuck in a rut. Askg if a programmer is smarter is like askg if a professional weight lifter is stronger thn non weight lifters!
Programmers created the 21st century. Google, ur browser, ur anti virus, ur media player,linux,android,windows etc came from programmers! If evry1 had d aptitude for these kinda things they wudnt b shortage of skilled programmers world wide.

Lawyers are smart, investment bankers are smart, mathematicians are smart even your mechanic is smart. Smartness is relative. To be a truly smart programmer never be opinionated about your tools and never ever stop learning.

Actually learning to program increase your IQ and logical reasoning greatly. But there are smart people in all works of life and there are programmers that are unintelligent also. Programmers are not the smartest people on earth. If they were they should be the highest scorers on all IQ tests. We also have these crazy Chess players also.
