Who hasn’t dropped their phone and suffered through that eternal second as you pick it up to check for damage? Never again! Apple has devised a system that could let a falling iPhone reorient itself to minimize potential damage.
The content of this patent (number 8,903,519) can be split into two sections–almost possible and completely off-the-wall science fiction. The plausible section proposes using an iPhone’s accelerometer and gyroscope to detect a fall, allowing the device to spring into action. Apple also lists an ultrasonic emitter as part of the system to detect when the phone has escaped your grasp. This isn’t yet built into phones, but that’s hardly the most outlandish thing in the patent.
