Nigerians, as a people, are very quick to adopt ideas and trends. Unfortunately, grammatical errors are not left out. Here are 3 of the most widely circulated (and adopted) grammatical errors made by Nigerians.

1. Be rest assured

This phrase is 100% WRONG. The correct phrase is "Rest Assured". There is no 'Be' in front of it.

Wrong usage: Be rest assured that I will come tomorrow
Correct usage: Rest assured that I will come tomorrow.

Explanation: Rest assured simply means that the other person should rest, with the assurance that something will get done.

2. Severally

This word is used by many Nigerians to mean 'several times'. This one is 101% wrong. Rather than say "severally", simply say "several times".

Wrong usage: I called him severally but he didn't respond
Correct usage: I called him several times, but he didn't respond

Explanation:"Severally" has only one meaning. It means "separately" or "individually". So when you say "I called him severally", you're actually saying :"I called him separately" or "I called him individually" (which I'm sure is not your intention smiley ).

3. 'Would' instead of 'Will'

Many use the word 'would' instead of 'will'. Would is in fact, the past tense of will, and is wrongly used a lot of the time. When talking about the future, we use "will", not "would".

Wrong usage: I would come to your office tomorrow.
Correct usage: I will come to your office tomorrow.

Yes, there are situations when 'would' is correct. These are when:

1. There is a condition attached to the comment (e.g. I would come if I had the time) OR
2. We are talking about the effect of a possible (but not actual) situation (e.g. It would make sense to arrive on time).

Well, hope the explanations above have made sense. If they have not, don't worry - just take the corrections given. They will take you a long way in the right circles.

Severally has been added to the Collins dictionary now

Nigeria is a Commonwealth country with a large Population and so are entitled to c reate new words and or add words to the English lexicon

Nigerians use the word "severally" in a unique way and that has now been recognized

You do not state any grammatical rules for your views

WHY can't there be a "be" in front of REST ASSURED.? What rule is broken beyond it does not agree with your ears?
Nothing wrong with it it is a matter of style rather than grammar

WOULD is definitely not the PAST TENSE of WILL

It is the CONDITIONAL tense used to indicate CONDITIONALITY

e.g Would you marry your mother? ( condition= if she was not your matter)
I would lend you the money but.............( condition = I am broke or I need to use the money for something etc)

If I did not go to school I would have become a bandit.............

and so on

If no be say...............I for = Would
