Is the EFCC really closing down cyber cafes in Nigeria?

If yes, why? You may need to be specific as a cyber cafe might have a strong reason to be closed down while another might not.

Let us go straight to the point lest we are accused of spreading misinformation.

I think it should interest you guys that the operation(s) of the so called "yahoo yahoo boys" is affecting the image of genuine netpreneurs and their operation(s) could mostly be carried out in most cyber cafes. If owners of these cafes have the interest of this country at heart, they should stop encouraging these boy or be closed down by EFCC.

The closure of cybercafes just is not the answer to this problem. We have put the burden of fighting 419 on cybercafe owners when we all know that the problem is much bigger than that. Sure the EFCC is working hard to clean up our image and fight all kinds of crime, but they have to find smarter ways to deal with cybercrime. Sure, if a cybercafe owner openly encourages the use of his or her cybercafe for nefarious activities, then I wholeheartedly support the closure of such a cybercafe.

Now let me propose something here. After requiring that all cybercafes register with the EFCC, the EFCC should install software programs that can monitor the activities of computers in cybercafes. Programs could be written that detect sentence patterns that are similar to the ones written by 419ers. And the EFCC should hire tech guys and girls who can monitor cybercafes and certainly the same software could be used by cybercafe owners to monitor their computers and simply lock or cancel accounts/ user IDs that are being used in sending fraudulent letters. These user IDs should be unique to each cybercafe user. That way a fraudster does not have multiple USER IDs for multiple cybercafes. So if you register at a cybercafe with a particular user id, that user id should follow you no matter where you go.

And the USER ID should be tied to the user's photo id that is stored at the cybercafe as well as at EFCC's Cybercafe central database. So if a user get online and is uses any registered cybercafer computer, they can be located because they EFCC can now tell precisely the location of the cybercafe and the precise computer they are using to engage in 419 etc.

At the very least, a monitoring system created by the EFCC will creat jobs for a lot of young Nigerians. The EFCC can solve a lot of cybercrimes if they they work with cybercrime fighters in more developed countries to design the best cybercrime fighting system for Nigeria. So in conclusion, I say, close cybercafes that openly let 419ers or encourgage 419ers to use their business to commit crime. But they should go a step further to put the necessary technical checks and balances in place to effectively deal with this scourge, instead of taking actions that end up becoming mere bandages that will not cure the disease. Just my thoughts.

Nigerians are one amazing lot - nothing you do is good in their sight - when the whole world carried the news that internet scamming is on the rise in Nigeria, many rose up to say the government is not doing anything - now the government is taking at least a semblance of an action to curb that trend, but alas, what will my country men say, they say government no do good o. Tell me something sweet - what is it you are researching that you can't research all thruough the day? Most boys who go doing night browsing don't go there doing research, they go scamming knowing fully well that most people in America - who they target often - are up and on the internet at about that time - all they do is use email exractors and credit card number readers to do their dubious act. What can anyone suggest to the government to do to curtail all these yahoo-yahoo activities of these boys - noone wil suggest anything but rather blame government in at least taking these step.

Most school aged boys now want to get rich by scamming on ebay - scamming on even dating sites, posing as women to men in other to dupe money out of them, where goes the leaders of tommorrow? All we do is blame government for poverty, is Nigeria the only African country with poverty? The other day I went to Johannesburg, and I needed to use a cafe, almost everyone I asked told me I will find my country men operated cafes around, and when I eventually found one, come and see the number of Nigerians there, phoning and talking on top of their voices, posing as Ministers and Central bank governor, we wont see these but we are all quick to blame and put down the government on anything.

I have spent three days in a cyber cafe night browsing before and all these boys do is chat and find targets and victims online - they don't do no research - if anyone is checking emails and doing genuine work - the day time is adequate and enough - at least in Nigeria - before things atke shape.

How can these shame be curbed?

Western Union fraud - Nigerians are there - Visa fraud, Nigerians are there - Credit Card fraud - Nigerians are there - yet all the blame goes on the government and not onthe individual.

I guess it's ok for them to close down cyber-cafes that refuse to cooperate with the fight against cyber-crime.
