Where Did U Live In Nigeria before Travelling Abroad & Now U Are Dissing Nigeria? by bronxdog: 12:36am On Jan 08, 2009
Most of the diasporic Nigerians find it realy easy to compare everything they have seen abroad to things in Nigeria, without realising that where they lived before travelling can determine the way they look back at Nigeria when they travel, example below:

If you lived in places like Ajegunle, Iyana Ipaja, Auchi, Obolo Epie, Azare, etc before you travelled out -  -  When you get to London say, everything will be like paradise to you, but if you lived in places like Lekki, Victoria Island, Abuja, Calaba, PH - etc, you will find nothing alluring on the streets of London and co.

If you used to eat apu, eba, gaari, etc before you travelled, you will count it a big deal eating burger when you get abroad and you will never want to speak anything good about Nigeria - but if your daly food in Nigeria included vegetables, brocolli, parsnips, chicken and co before you left, you will find it abhoring eating burger on the streets of New York and London.

If you were only opportuned to shop in oshodi, agege, ketu before you travelled out - it will be a big deal for you seeing the bright lights of shopping malls in America and you will forever look down on Nigeria - but if you had shopped in nice grocery shops in VI/Allen/Ikeja/Abuja etc before you travelled - you wont find it a bggie going to shop in shopping malls abroad.

So, my conclusion about the diasporic Nigerians who thinks everyone at home is poor and under priviledge because they havent travelled abroad like them, i say, most people experiences better life than you in Nigeria and doesnt see all the things you call better life anything better but normal day to day activities /life which you think doesnt exisit in Nigeria just because you lived in the rural areas and have no opportunities of getting these things - example - imagine a diasporic Nigerian asking if there were swimming pools in Nigeria - why, because he lived in the rural area before travellng.

Most of us see how things are supposed to be when we travel outside the country. We see how the rail system could improve our transportation. We see 24/7 electricity. We see roads without massive potholes etc

but i fail to see the point of your article. What percentage of Nigerians live in places like VGC?

This backlash against Nigerians in diaspora has some element of envy in it, IMHO. Sigmund freud would have had a field day with you.

Now, give me one good reason why this is in the 'Politics' section?

Disclaimer: I'm not a 'Nigerian in Diaspora'.

where in Nigeria don't you have pothole? Ajah, VI
where in Nigeria do you have 24 hours electricity without generators, (Everywhere)
where in nigeria don't you have armed robber attack regularly. (Osborne road Ikoyi)
Where in Nigeria don't you have bad drainage and water overflowing onto the street, (Victoria island)
where in Nigeria don't you encounter 3 hours traffic regularly. (Lekki-Ajah expressway)

FYI I worked on the Island for a long time before I left Nigeria!!!

But in the diaspora - there are no armed bandits/robbers on a daily basis, but in the dispora, there are no drainage problems - go to London - but in the diaspora, there are no traffic jams, and worse still, the diaspora is exactly paradise.

In my part Diaspora, i dont see encounter the kind of traffic on Lekki Ajah road, Akin Adesola, Osborne and 3rd mainland bridge on a daily basis.

Fact : Nigerians who have gone abroad for whatever reason did not make the system function efficiently ; the met it functioning efficiently because the people  living there solved problems instead of just complaining about problems. Where have they personally made any difference?

Not knocking anyone for chosing to live abroad , just observing that without a problem there will not be a need for a solution ; you have the choice of being part of the solution by getting involved in as little way as you can or contributing to the problem by becoming an evangelist of woes.

They don't just meet it running efficiently, they help it to continue running effectively by paying taxes and they respect laws designed to prevent excessive wear on the facilities. This, sadly, is a culture lost on many Nigerians.

Put some more thought into this; by providing constructive criticism they help to revive issues in people who have been so long immersed in the wrong that they are jaded to things around them. This is why Nigerians are satisfied with the half-job ribadu did as EFCC boss. This is why we are appreciative when a Governor delivers even when it turns out that he stole massively.

This is why the navy could tell Nigerian and the Nigerian Senate that Uzoma Okere was beaten for snatching the Naval rating's horsewhip. Yet no one had the balls and common sense to be outraged at why armed personnel carry horsewhips in the first place.

When you travel out, you see things from a fresh, different perspective. You then have a benchmark to compare and contrast with what's going on in Nigeria. we have rich human and natural resources and it's only decent (and patriotic) to be appalled at the state of the Nation.

Keep up the infantile outbursts. They only serve to amuse me!

Nigerians also pay taxes; i even pay more that what i was paying while working in the UK. It is NOT by the taxes you pay in UK/US that matters but how it is effectively put to use by the government of those countries. I see no extra contribution from any foreigner living in these countries apart from those taxes which are even deducted before you are paid.

Yet no one had the balls and common sense to be outraged at why armed personnel carry horsewhips in the first place.
It is easier said than done. Who do you expext to challenge a man carrying a fully loaded GUN. Or do you think the Jews did not have balls under the Nazis ; or the palestines right now Israelis?
If you can raise your voice in the UK/US, it is NOT ( and I REPEAT ; it is NOT ) because you have balls BUT because the government let you.

I totally agree about seeing things from a diffrent perspective and you and I have every right to be appalled about the state of everything in the country, but again I insist that it is rather an unfair to say Nigerian have NO balls.

By far the majority of people who pay taxes are people whose taxes are deducted before they even get the money. Most of the others who can avoid paying taxes do so. Even if i cannot provide raw statistics to back up what we all know, it's obvious from threads on nairaland relating to taxes that many Nigerians do not believe in paying tax to a non-functional government.

Thailand? Greece? These are modern day examples. All it takes is a popular cry of outrage. Nigeria cannot afford to pull a china and do another tiananmen style massacre of civillians. You know how long it took apartheid south africa to live down those images of black people gunned down in the streets?

However, i wasn't calling for a demonstration of a challenge to loaded Guns. it is well within the constitutional rights of the Senate and House of rep members to pass a bill outlawing the carrying of horsewhips, or to pressure yar'Adua to enact more laws curbing the excesses of the armed forces.
Nigerians too can recall Senators and Reps members. but the lure of filthy lucre has stripped us of that power.

Perhaps i was a bit too heavy-handed with my generalization. No offence meant.

Yeah right - solving problems indeed.

The people driving like madmen in Lagos and other cities. . . .how are they 'solving' problems?

This isn't a matter of 'dissing' Nigeria. Random example - ordinary mom and pop stores in the 'diaspora' have cash machines, CCTV and regular electricity. Does this exist anywhere in Nigeria? (except you are very rich of course, even then, no power)

Electricity is a given in the West, it's like air - taken for granted. No matter where you live in Nigeria, you'd be affected by the power problem (unless you're an oblivious rich kid who's parents always put on generator for and never let understand the true state of things).

Diaspora is not paradise - the problem is with Nigeria. Life can be so hellish that even having power for two days straight seems like heaven! People start to do thanksgiving for that.  shocked shocked

No one is making a glib comparison, I'd like to even move away from the 'Western' countries. Even places like India (big cities at least), Malaysia, Indonesia and Brazil, who we all started with are MUCH MUCH better! Is that a fault of being in the diaspora? Don't they have problems they are solving?

How many people are staying in Nigeria as a choice? Go to the embassies and see your evidence - countless people desperate to leave.

There are a few who are making money and able to create their individual oases in Nigeria, of course they have no reason to want to leave, how does that help others?

The people in diaspora doing medical interventions, sending books home, building boreholes and other social amenities, donating equipment to hospitals and the like are 'solving problems' too - you don't have to be in Nigeria to contribute to solving problems.

Brox_dog, you must be a not too humble person,

You see if Jesus was born in a dirty person. God saw mansion everywhere but had Jesus in a dirty place.
If where you were born determine presidential election in the USA. Obama would not be elected.

You see the problem we have is people like you.

Do you want to know why Yar adua is the worst president in the History of Nigeria. the answer is because Yar adua was not born in ajegunle , he was born in a mansion like situation. His father was a minister. He never suffered all his life.

So yar adua can not feel the pain an average suffering northerner feel or a southerner. So he does not care for an average nigerian, you can only care for what you feel. tHAT WHY THE NORTH WOULD NEVER DEVELOP. YOU SEE YAR ADUA MARRIED HIS CHILDREN TO RICH PEOPLE. AND LEADERSHIP IN THE NORTH IS A CLASS.

You can only make change in nigeria if your background is like that of Jesus, in a dirty place like Ajegunle. Obama have 4 shoes. you can only change lagos only those who once lived in ajegunle like. where the voters live. You can only develop lagos if you are from ajegunle like.

Only people from Ajegunle can make lagos or africa or Like we yorubas would be moving to benin republic a better place. arrogant people can not. The children of the rich and famour cant not. because most of them have never met Mr suffering. What is the name of Mr Suffering. ? what?

how can you expect yar adua who have never knew suffering all is life to solve the problem of suffering people. He does not know what suffering is. he has never met mr suffering.

You cant solve what you do not feel or know. Yar Adua can not feel the suffering of Nigerian, and he would not be able to solve it.
the children born to the very rich can never been good leaders.only God can help them to be. YOU MUST KNOW SUFFERING TO SOLVE SUFFERING. you can not solve what you do not know. that is i pity yar adua most time.

And without fear of man, standing before God, the one that says all things are possible for him that believe. And representing our humble leader chief obafemi awolowo who started the Egbe Omo Odua , who was born in suffering and knew mr suffering, eat with mr suffering, and walked with mr suffering. I am saying without the fear of man that we the yorubas want to join the republic of benin.
