Nigeria neutral in Israel, Palestine conflict -Maduekwe

Nigeria will not take sides in the Israel/Palestine conflict, Foreign Affairs Minister, Ojo Maduekwe, said in Abuja on Tuesday.

"We are not taking sides with any group, but we will rather be by the side of peace, justice and amicable resolution of the conflict," Maduekwe told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

"We are urging for an end to the conflict and a peaceful resolution," he added.

Maduekwe, who said Nigeria enjoyed excellent relations with both countries, noted that the two sides to the conflict had suffered greatly.

"The collective leadership of the Middle East should see to the reduction of the crisis by bringing the matter back to the conference table.

"It will be clear that the killing ground does not provide the answers for people who are destined to live together," he added.

On the safety of Nigerian pilgrims to Israel, he said it would be wrong to stop people from fulfilling their spiritual obligations.

"Israel holds strong memories for many Nigerians and a holy land for many Christians who naturally want to embark on pilgrimage.

"I do not see any wisdom in asking them (pilgrims) not to go, provided adequate measures are taken for their safety," the minister said.
