The idea of being jew comes from being a part of the promise God gave Abraham. He's lineage will be remembered with that of the jews because he believed what God said and it was credited to him as righteousness. Besides the Bible clearly states that "through isaac will your lineage will be reckoned". Abraham believed God for isaac!
