You misrepresented some facts here. I am in the system and this is coming from the horse's mouth. CONUASS is a Consolidated Salary, which includes basic salary, peculiar allowance and rent subsidy for university lecturers in all the federal universities. Although, some states pay more or less and this depends on some intrinsic and extrinsic factors. For instance, lecturers from LASU claim they receive higher salaries compared to UNILAG (anecdotal). Professors do not earn 800k/month except professors of Medicine who get double salaries (university and teaching hospitals).
It is not DOUBLE salary.

Follow the link above and download most of the salary circulars in Nigeria. What Op put up there is correct with few expections; medical doctors employed as academic staffs enjoy some allowances from CONMESS circular in addition to CONUASS.

I said double salaries (it is semantics). You receive salaries from two different institutions; whatever it is called? Two salaries? All I know is you get two different pay slips from two different institutions.

Hello

Please can you tell us what lecturers actually earn before and after their PhD. Thanks.

What you earn depends on your cadre before receiving your PhD. What you earn is not generic, it depends on your entry levels and years of service.

Potch,

What do Fresh PhDs currently earn? and what is the duration of promotion if one meets all the required criteria?

Thanks

As a fresh doctorate degree holder, you are most likely to start from lecturer II. Divide the starting salary of L.II by 12 (CONUASS III: N1.67 M per annum), you are likely to get N137, 000 before deductions of tax and other allowances.

Been in this field, I cannot let you to be fed some unrealistic informations. I wish to stress the fact that nigerian academics are paid basic salary and all allowances as consolidated pay, so anything you see here is the total pay (before deducting taxes and dues)

I also wish to clarify that medical doctors teaching in faculties of Medicine are not paid double salary, rather they receive call duty and few extra allowances to bridge the gap between them and their non-academic counterparts.

The following are the detailed income per cadre of academics:

Cadre: Graduate assistant
Entry requirement: Bachelors Degree
Min pay: N105,281 p month (Conuass1step1)
Max pay: N120,674

Cadre: Assistant Lect
Entry requirement: Masters
Min pay: N120,922 (conuass 2 step1)
Max pay: N146,241 (conuass2 step7 i.e after7 years of been employed as conuass2step1)

Cadre: Lect II
Entry: PhD or Masters with at least 3 years lecturing experience (university lect preferred)
Min Pay: N137,459 (conuass3step1)
Max pay: N164,970 (conuass3step7)

Cadre: Lect I
Entry: PhD +3 years exp or Masters + 6 years post Master lecturing experience + reqiured research and responsibility points
Min pay: N173,332 (conuass4step1)
Max pay: N223,667 (conuass4step7)

Cadre: Sen Lect
Entry: PhD + 6 years experience
Min pay: N257,625 (conuass5step1)
Max pay: N371,292 (conuass5step7)

Cadre: Reader/ass prof
Entry: PhD + 9 years experience
Min pay: N314,018 (conuass6step1)
Max pay: N417,062 (conuass6step7)

Cadre:PROFESSOR
Entry: PhD + 12 years + so many other things
Min pay: N381,695
Max pay: N501,680 (when a prof reaches this step, he/she will remain on this pay until retirement or death, remember, tax and union dues are yet to be deducted, after deducting, the final pay will be less than 500K).

However money aside, the profession is a noble one, if you do it an enjoy it, you will not care about the pay, because you will always be contented with what you have.
