They were the first generation of officers. The Chief of Army staff was Danjuma who was 37. Nigeria was only 15 years old and did not have the personnel. Even in the Nigerian Army how likely now is it to become a general before 40 these days but then (1967) Gowon became head of state at about 32. That is just a reflection of the level of development in the country at that time. Now we are getting Chiefs of Army staff over 50 years old.

In those days there was no "older" generation of officers,professionals etc. Nigeria was relatively ahead of some African countries where we would send Nigerians to be their Chief Justice or Chief of Army Staff

He got that position because he was in the Army. Ho many politician can become a governor at 30?

Even then......they were still young.

I like your analysis BTW....and let me add that yes...we were ahead of many African countries. Like the DR Congo which at independence had zero indigenous officers.....and Uganda which had two officers by 1966.
