that is what i'm trying to say if not because our naira had lost its value over the years which is the reason why it seems their fees is huge. imagine $24000 to current naira value is nothing to write home about.

Technically OAU won. Miracy was alone in the debate. Two against one sound ridiculous. Even if her partner fail to appear the organizers show have prepare room for a back up. By asking for 2 speakers and 1 back up in case of absentee.

How can anyone even judge 2 opponents against 1.

Please don't insult the intelligence of the viewers.

Good presentation for both sides both I can not call this a fair debate. Miracy single handedly pull 26 points against a combined vote of 46points.

This debate is not fair
she did very well, i think the judgement was not fair @ all,all d same,Miracy u did well.

INCREASE  IN TUITION  FEES  IN  NIGERIAN  UNIVERSITIES  IS  NECESSARY  FOR  BETTER  EDUCATIONAL  STANDARD.

This is the best idea of the century! Few months ago, Professor Ayo Olukotun recently suggested that “Parents may be willing to pay more for higher education if there is a transparent and convincing inventory of their budgetary profiles and if such increases are graduated over a period of time, devoid of the usual ambushes and if genuine attempts are made to persuade stakeholders concerning the need for such increases.”, also Jodi Rell elaborates further ''The best maths lesson we can teach college students this year is to add a tuition increase and benefit from the dividends of higher education. "
With this I say, Good day, the chairperson, panel of judges, accurate timekeeper, the moderators, co-debaters, distinguish ladies and gentlemen. My name is Microflux a representative of the ever articulate Obafemi Awolowo University, to support the statement that states " Increase in tuition fees in Nigerian universities is necessary for a better educational standard. "
The comfortability and reproductibility of what we learn, and what we are taught depends on the cost we pay to acquire it. Before I begin to marshal my points, on why the tuition fees should be increased to get a better education standard. It is indeed wise to unlock a salient point in the topic.
What is Tuition fees? To a layman, the context of the word maybe misinterpreted, therefore, Tuition fees according to wikipedia.com are the fees charged for instruction during higher education. Tuition fees are charged in some countries to assist with funding of staffs and faculties, course offerings, lab equipment to provide comfortable learning experience.
In the first instance, effective and productive learning can only be attained in a condusive and attractive environment furnished with highly skilled lecturers. In a period like this, where there is economic recession and there are many sectors the government have to manage, increase in tuition fees should be considered.
Unequivocally, to get the best car that will suit your comfortability and any other functions called best, you need to pay a huge sum of money to acquire it. The higher the cost, the higher the dividends you gets from what you acquired. From my research, one of the best university pays a sum of £3,500 ?(for newly admitted students). If this is converted to naira according to the latest exchange rate(which is 1 euros equals 217.56 Naira), it amounts to 761,460 Naira; there is tendency it will be increased soon. Compare and contrast the education standard in this university to our education standard in Nigeria. There are clear difference! To increase our education standard and if our institutions must be rated among the top-notch universities in the world, the tution fees should be increased to meet the needs for adequate and efficient studying environment in terms of accomodation, amenities among others.
Moreover, the concomiant devaluation of naira; dwindling oil revenue, due to a dip in oil prices; and across-the-board deficiencies in infrastrutural facilities in the education and transport sectors, leading to a further reduction in the already low budgetary allocation to education. This has grown worsen in the past few years. It was this long-term neglect vis-a-vis the federal government's failure to fulfil her contractual obligations that led to the protracted strike by the Academic staff union of universities in 2013. Which is also currently affecting some states, most especially in the south-western and eastern part of the country. In spite this, students' enrolment has been increasing swiftly without any precautionary or speculative increase in necessary resources, hereby utilising available facilities beyond their capacity. Am sure if this trend continues, some universities will collapse. To avoid these, I think the tuition fees of universities should be increased so that more facilities can be constructed, to meet the needs of enrolled students.
Certainly, one of the weapon that has been discovered over the years for combating unemployment is increase in tuition fees. In the sense that when the tuition fees is increased, the standard of education will also increase simultaneously. If a graduate of Oxford university and a gradute of one Nigerian universities tender their results(with same grade) for a job application. The Oxford graduate will be given preference over the Nigerian gradutate. Why? Because of the difference in their education standard. The reality, however, is the periodic increase in tuition fees is a universal practice. In the united states, for example, tuition fees have increased by about 225% over the last 30 years. Tuition is often increased not only to match the shortfall in funding, but also in response to the rising cost and inflatory pressures.
On the whole, there are sum main reasons why, historically, federal and state governments have had difficulties with increasing tuition fees in the universities which made universities to react in an unruly manner namely : university budget profiles are often not transparent, thus making it difficult to verify the basis for tuition increase;there is often a lack of consultation with, and education of, relevant stakeholders, notably students and their parents; the hike in tuition is often too steep, as in the case of the Lagos State University, where tuition was raised from a low N25,000 to as high as N350,000. The attendance strike by the students led to a complete reversal. In addition to the above suggestions, it is necessary to make tuition increase a joint decision by all state governments, leaving each state to determine the modalities of the increase. Likewise, in addition to regular tuition fees, universities should also increase other charges, for example for late registration, withdrawal, and cancellation of courses. True, such charges may not yield appreciable revenue, they may encourage students to be disciplined.
With my afore-mentioned points, the argument should no longer be whether university tuition and other fees should be increased in Nigerian universities. Rather, the argument is about when and how to go about it, how it is managed and utilized.
I believe you have been convinced!
Thanks for Reading.

An ABU student pays a minimum of 16k and maximum of 22k every session. A new student doesn't pay more dan 25k. Kwara State isn't part of OAU's catchment area. Olodo ni boboyi sha. Agba oshi
