Postal Officers & Knowledge Of Geography by Nemeziz9ja: 5:05pm On Feb 18, 2009
grin
I was at the Ikeja Post Office the other day to send a registered parcel and the guy in line before me was having a hard time with the NIPOST staff.
Scenario: The guy was sending a package to Malta, after he had presented the envelope to the NIPOST woman, she weighed it, checked the location on her list and gave him the cost of sending the letter. I guess, she was however unsure of the actual continent Malta belonged to even though she already gave the price for Europe.
She turned back to her supervisor to confirm the continental location of Malta, and Alas, the supervisor said: "Malta is in the Caribbeans"
I nearly busted my crap there. Caribbean ke?
An argument now ensued between the customer and the supervisor as to the actual location of Malta; until this guy showed the woman the map of Malta through a Google search on his mobile phone, the woman was adamant that Malta is close to Bermuda oh.
A NIPOST official that does not know where Malta is located is an error to the system.
I think they need to either give them a wall-to-wall map of the world before our packages will go round-the-world before delivery.
Naija!!!

Yeah right.
I should have recorded it.
But, it was damn hilarious; Nigeria!
Re: Postal Officers & Knowledge Of Geography by tpia: 5:24pm On Feb 18, 2009
oh, I didnt realize this was the usual Nigeria bashing thread! Should have checked your signature.

Sorry!!!
Re: Postal Officers & Knowledge Of Geography by Nemeziz9ja: 5:28pm On Feb 18, 2009
@ Tpia:
I was not bashing Nigeria but rather pointing out the basic issues that elude us while we focus on the big irrelevancies.
You detect venom in my post? Its my anger at the aberrations in the great country called NIGERIA.
My signature; thats my personal business and I am sure you should focus on the subject instead of what I affirm.

Another stupid thread - The other day I washed a video on NTA, people in America were asked where Nigeria is, on the street of America, and many of them havent even heard of the name Nigeria before, talkless of knowing which continent Nigeria belonged to, so, poster, what s the big deal, what is causing your laughter if the woman failed to know where MALTA is? what is the big deal in that? and to say you rush to NairaLand to make a topic of that?

Many atimes abroad, many people dont know most places where other people come from, how is her case a special case?
Re: Postal Officers & Knowledge Of Geography by Kobojunkie: 5:33pm On Feb 18, 2009
@Nem, you for post the video on YouTube. Seriously, pictures and videos next time!!
Re: Postal Officers & Knowledge Of Geography by SamMilla1(m): 5:33pm On Feb 18, 2009
Well this could be a joke but things like that happen everyday.
I hope you dont expect everyone who works with nipost to know every country's location off head.

I dont work with nipost but i know where every country is located.
That doesnt make me smarter than people who doesnt.
There are Nigerian senators who cant correctly identify the location of Zamfara state on the map.
Here you are talking about world map.
Anyway, Thats one advantage our generation has over the previous generations.
INTERNET IS A GREAT THING , YOU KNOW
Re: Postal Officers & Knowledge Of Geography by Nemeziz9ja: 5:34pm On Feb 18, 2009
Hers is a special case cause I am entrusting her with my package and I want to be sure its going to the right destination.
I believe you will board a vehicle that the driver do not know the destination and please,
Another stupid thread
can't you start any post without an insult?

Re: Postal Officers & Knowledge Of Geography by Nemeziz9ja: 5:37pm On Feb 18, 2009
I am not saying she has to know all the countries; thats where the map issue comes in.
Simple, they need a reference before letters get dispatched to the Bermuda triangle.

QUESTION: why are there broken lines on the road and why are there solid sometimes double lines?

you wont believe the reason i got for the broken lines question from a driver with experience.
Re: Postal Officers & Knowledge Of Geography by tpia: 5:54pm On Feb 18, 2009
my own problem is, those of us not in Nigeria yet who experience similar things once in a while, what should we blame it on?

I myself dont know the location of malta offhand without a map. undecided

Another blunder by our system.
It is not a MUST for the NIPOST official to know where every nation is, but it is the duty of the system to have something in place where they could just enter the nation and will calculate the cost, however, will the system accept such system, nope, cos they wont be able to steal money.
Nigeria, ant of Africa
Re: Postal Officers & Knowledge Of Geography by Nemeziz9ja: 6:21pm On Feb 18, 2009
@ Tpia: if you are not in Nigeria and you have experienced exactly what I have just posted, then sure buy maps and volunteer it to them in Auckland.I have berated the issue, complained about the problem and pro-active in suggesting a solution to it.Lets not pass the buck cuz we really need to get it right.

@poster
sorry but im still struggling to see the hillarious side to this,if you posted this prompted by a genuine concern for the state of the nigerian postal service then i share your concern, but doing a papy luwe with it,im speechless,
one thing you shouldnt fail to forget is that, these people have not heard of training talk less of work shop, the money for that would have ended up in the pockets of some official, they are poorly paid hence no incentive to go out of their way to learn where malta is ,let me ask you how many american citizens know that africa is a continent?
how many postal officials in america or even uk can say where malta is off head without consulting their computers or google?
how many customers will come posting a package to malta of all places?its like asking me where leichenstein is exactly in europe or randomly asking a postal official here and u ll be suprised they ll be looking at you blankly

Damnnnn, you are so real and i love it that way.
Ask most Americans where Canada is, they will tell you it is in europe, does that now make then less of american, yet this same kinda people will come to Nigeria and they will be running the show, all cos they are americans, most nigerians knows enuf about other nations, cos they are always at the door post of the embassy to leave for a greener pastures.
I like your post

so you're giving me advice on how to fix the problem yet you cant do the same at your own end?

You said a co worker pulled up the info on google, yet you still felt like bashing the woman simply because Malta's location is unknown to most people. The Maltans themselves arent complaining but you are. Maybe you should abuse yourself before abusing Nigeria?
Re: Postal Officers & Knowledge Of Geography by Nemeziz9ja: 8:12pm On Feb 18, 2009
Right. I am serious about the experience but I can't deny the hilarity of the situation.
So, you are saying now that I should not blame the officer but the system, right? Fine.
However, the officials thrive within the system and if they are getting their income from the same, its proper they have the right tool; imagine if the sender does not know the continent where Malta is and the postal officer tagged him with the cost of packaging to the Caribbeans, thats kinda disastrous for the system within the system.
And for crying out loud, why do we Nigerians like to compare ourselves to the USA, UK and the Western world when Ghana and South Africa are here next door for comparison? I did not compare the situation at the post office with that in any country, so lets focus on the issue at hand. The postal officers need access to information and while some of them are stark computer illiterates, map of the world is simple to use.
If we take our packages to UPS and others where their agents and officers have access to the world index, PC and are literate, I mean educated, what will become of NIPOST?
The fact remains that the situation was ABSURD! and funny grin

yes I did. You suggested I buy the post office a map. I'm also suggesting you do the same either for your local post office or for the lady you're lambasting.

whatever. Point is someone showed her the actual location unlike yourself who was busy offering criticism without any concrete solution. If you travel abroad and experience the same thing will you now blame it on racism or something else.

You may have been offended that Malta wasnt as well known as you thought it was, but its not like you were mailing the parcel to Switzerland and the woman was clueless. Chikena!

Kobojunkie- you do know you're very cowardly, right? ROFLMAO!!!
