What Exactly Is The Role Of National Assembly In Nigeria by 9jatriot(m): 11:57am On Jun 17, 2015
The role played the house of parliament or National Assembly in other democracies is well documented and known, however, I do not seem to understand what the role of that of Nigeria is.

My little observation is that it is an opportunity for the 2 political parties to flex muscles with each other for supremacy. That was the case in 2011 when the opposition supported Tambuwal to spite PDP and a revenge mission in 2015 by PDP to spite APC.

The only other time they never flex muscles is when it has to do with their pocket directly. For example, joining committees, allocating budgets to themselves, wardrobe allowance and hardship allowances. The budget each year for these less than 500 people is 150 billion naira. That mean in 4 yrs, they would have gulped 600Billion, doing what exactly?

Out of curiosity, apart from the theoretical duty of making laws, what is the role of senate and house of rep? They look like toothless bull dogs to me. I remember during the fuel subsidy saga, they hurried cut short their recess (which they are always going to anyway), made a resolution that the FG did not even acknowledge not to talk of following.

The other day, they summoned minister of petroleum and finance who totally ignored them. When they make a resolution, what I hear is that it is not binding on the government, hence what exactly is their practical role in our development as a nation. No body should quote constitutional roles to me, I want practical and relevant roles and responsibilities.

They collect ward robe allowance, whereas the rest of us use our salary to buy clothes, they collect hardship allowance whereas the real suffering citizens have nothing, they get constituency allowance with no constituency projects.

If I hand a magic wand, I would scap the National Assembly. Nonsense

This is not a PDP/ APC party thing.

I've said it before that our NASS members are the real parasites we have in this country. Unless something(Egyptian style) is done, they will keep sucking this country dry.

the same question can be asked of ministers and many other political posts.
the people actually running this country are the civil servants without whom everything comes to a standstill.

They are supposed to be the backbone of any liberal democratic setting, which Nigeria, for all intents belongs to. Essentially to check the powers of executive. However the case in Nigeria leaves a lot to be desired.

Urgent reforms are needed, IMO:

House of reps is actually more representative since it is related directly to the majority whose interests the representative are to protect. Indeed over the years they have proven to be a far more formidable force in the legislature. However, I think the number should be pruned. Wards merged so the total reps should not exceed 100.

Senate: Total unjustifiable waste, IMO. We don't need more than a single representative per state, plus FCT (totalling 37 as against 107). The whole idea of North, Central , South for each state, even for populations the size of a nursery school is untenable and silly.

Lastly, ofcourse is the highly contentious issue of their immoral, stupendous remuneration. IT has to be aggressively looked into and chnged.

I wish this could get to the social media where people can begin to question them on what their roles and responsibilities are, what their KPI are, what performance standards we can use to measure them each year.

lets do a rough calculation.
150 billion for 500 people.
Assume that 40% of that amount is used for the maintenance of the building itself and other running cost. That leaves 90 (billion) for 500 people. 500 is just for ease of calculation.
Now divide 90 billion by 500, that is 180 million per person in a country where the minimum wage is 19 thousand naira.

Parliament should be scrapped, we can use social media to make our laws and send to NBA and Nigerian Judicial Council to ratify such laws, Haba, no wonder there was so much treachery in the last senate presidency election, yet we go de use our small MB de argue for and against. Nonsense

Senate President Bukola Saraki has denied that federal lawmakers get N9billion wardrobe allowance.

He also said there were plans by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to reduce salaries and allowances of federal lawmakers.

Saraki, who stated this on his Twitter handle yesterday after meeting with the RMAFC boss, said the annual wardrobe allowance for each senator is N506,600 per annum, about N2.25 million ‎for their four-year tenure.

He also absolved lawmakers of indiscriminately allocating monies to themselves, and said that RMAFC had the sole responsibility of fixing their remuneration, adding that the Commission would soon publish details of their allowances on its website.

“RMAFC was in my office to clarify (that) wardrobe allowance is N506,600 per senator.‎ I have just been informed that RMFAC will be publishing details of allowances on their website.

“With the current challenge we are facing as a nation, RMAFC will be reviewing allowances to reflect the current economic trend. Fixing remuneration is sole responsibility of RMAFC,” the Senate president said.

LEADERSHIP recalls that there were media reports that a member of House Representatives collects N17.5 million as wardrobe allowance annually, while a senator receives about N21.5 million.
