Armed robbery in Oyo State
Cases of armed robbery are rife in Oyo State. And the state government is doing everything possible to checkmate the situation. One of such is the drafting of policemen to guard establishments.

Vigilance committees have been set up at ward levels while organisations like the Civil Defence Corps and Oodua People’s Congress have joined in the crusade against robbery and other criminal activities in the state.

It will be recalled that at the tail end of last year, robbery cases were recorded in Iwo Road and Idi-Ape area of Ibadan resulting in the bizarre killing of innocent people and the carting away of huge sums of money.

The robbery attempt at Oluawo compound, Orita Basorun/Ashi in the same city was however, foiled by the vigilante security men on guard.

Only recently, the robbers renewed their attack by waylaying some officials of the state government ordering them to alight from the Camry car they were in and the driver ordered to take them(robbers) to an unknown destination.

Up till now, nobody knows what happened to the driver or the car. Recently too, two armed robbery cases were reported by the media.

Armed robbers launched an attack on an old generation bank in Oluyole area of Ibadan and another along Ibadan/Iseyin road resulting in the killing of innocent traders who were travelling on the road at the time of robbery.

In finding a permanent solution to the problem, Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala, late last year, made known his intention to write a letter to President Yar’Adua, for approval for a joint patrol of soldiers and policemen in a bid to put the situation under control. I don’t know if the governor has done as he had promised.

Nevertheless, it is pertinent to state that, it is only in peace time that good governance can be achieved.
